Matthieu Barret - Domaine du Coulet

The diversity of his Cornas plots allows the winegrower to produce several cuvées, each associated with particular lieux-dits, whose blending reflects his vision of the terroir. Domaine du Coulet is spread across different terroirs, including Les Arlettes, Le Coulet, La Patronne, and Le Serre, and also has a few vines in the Les Eygas, La Geynale, Mazards, and Reynard sites. On the celebrated terroirs of Cornas, Mathieu Barret cultivates his vineyard with the utmost respect for the land and the vines, following the principles of organic and biodynamic farming. With a light-touch approach, Mathieu Barret produces carefully crafted, gently extracted wines at Domaine du Coulet, with highly appealing fruit. These cuvées have a distinctive style in which power does not necessarily mean harshness. The wines are aged in 400- to 500-liter barrels or large oak casks, allowing them to breathe without taking on too much oak character. Since 2006, Domaine du Coulet has also used egg-shaped concrete tanks, whose main contribution is to preserve the wine’s freshness while respecting the purity of the fruit. The range produced by Domaine du Coulet includes Cornas Brise Cailloux, Cornas La Géniale Patronne, Cornas Billes Noires, and Cornas Ogre (made only in certain vintages and previously produced in magnum format under the name “Gore”). There are also two Côtes du Rhône cuvées: Brises Cailloux, a white wine made from Marsanne, Roussanne, and Viognier, and No Wine’s Land, a red Rhône wine. Cornas Brise Cailloux is taut with acidity and minerality, aromatic, highly spiced, and remarkably easy to drink. Cornas Billes Noires is highly concentrated and austere in its youth, with the minerality of its decomposed granite terroir carrying through its long finish. Cornas Ogre develops continually in the glass, with a bouquet of spice, licorice, smoke, and candied black fruit; it has a strong granite-derived mineral character and a velvety texture on the palate.
