Domaine Aurélien Chataignier: a winemaker to follow in the Rhône
The Domaine Aurélien CHATAGNIER is located on the heights of the commune of St Pierre de Bœuf. The vines are located in 3 departments: the Rhône, with the Côte-Rôtie parcels in Ampuis, the Loire, in the commune of Malleval and the Ardèche.

Aurélien Chatagnier's story began in 2002 with the cultivation of 1.2 Ha of vin de pays. With the help of fellow winemakers (he was vinifying at Pierre Gaillard's estate), Aurélien Chatagnier expanded his estate's area by gradually replanting vines on fallow family land, particularly in the Saint Joseph appellation, and then purchased new parcels. Today, the vines extend over an area of 8 Ha of magmatic rocks, predominantly granite and metamorphic rocks, which offer good resistance to erosion on the steep slopes of the vineyard. Aurélien Chatagnier is one of the rising stars of the Northern Rhône, recognized by his peers notably for his Saint-Joseph cuvée "Sybarite", a pure Syrah cuvée on granite soil, from the commune of Charnas, with an area of only 0.25 Ha, producing approximately 1200 bottles per year. This single-parcel selection cuvée is aged in oak barrels for 1 year, two-thirds in new wood. A rare cuvée, named after the Greek city of Sybaris, defined as: the pursuit of refined pleasures. On the nose, the red Rhône wine opens with beautiful touches of sweet spices of thyme and garrigue. It is recommended to aerate it well, as the wine then develops aromas of black olives and smoked bacon, and notes of black cherries. The palate is extremely silky on the attack but endowed with great energy, carried by spicy and cocoa notes, and accompanied by superb juicy and very indulgent fruit. As for white Rhônes, the white St-Joseph is composed of 60% Marsanne and 40% Roussanne. On the nose, the wine reveals notes of dried fruits, apricot, lemongrass and lemon balm, with an airy quality. On the palate, spiced yellow peach (star anise notes) dominates, but provides a beautiful aromatic intensity whose complexity will develop over 2-3 years. The Côte Rôtie is subtle yet complex on the nose with notes of red and black berries, pepper, cocoa and menthol. The palate is consistent with the nose on blackcurrant, black cherry and blueberry with spices. The texture is indulgent and silky, extending into a long, fresh finish. Finally, the Condrieu presents exotic notes of fresh apricot and floral notes of verbena. Precise on the palate, the texture is ample and rich, but well-structured, supported by good acidity that does not weigh down the finish. A genuine success in this appellation. An estate to recommend with an excellent quality-price ratio.
