Wines from Domaine La Chapelle Saint-Mathieu: buy at the best price

La Chapelle Saint-Mathieu is one of the most singular and ambitious viticultural projects in contemporary Languedoc. Founded in 2017 in Aniane, in the Hérault, on the left bank of the Hérault river facing the Larzac, this estate was born from the meeting of several figures of French wine: Jean-Emmanuel Parcé, the emblematic winemaker of Domaine de la Rectorie in Banyuls, guided in his project by Laurent Vaillé of La Grange des Pères, in association with François Dauvergne and Jean-François Ranvier, a duo of Rhône wine négociants recognized for their parcel selections. The founding approach: to clear and replant 10 hectares of virgin land lying fallow for nearly 50 years, formerly worked by the Jourde family, on a terroir of gravel, pebbles, calcareous scree and yellow marl that Jean-Emmanuel himself describes as "the little Burgundy of the Languedoc". The labels bear paintings by Jean-Emmanuel Parcé, to mark the estate's own identity, distinct from La Rectorie. Jeanne Parcé and her husband are now established at the estate.

History of Domaine La Chapelle Saint-Mathieu

The plots of Domaine La Chapelle Saint-Mathieu have a long and profound history. Originally cleared by the monks of the Abbaye d'Aniane in the Middle Ages, they were subsequently worked with rigor and passion by the Jourde family for decades. When Yves Jourde ceased his farming activities, the land gradually returned to a wild state. For around forty years, the garrigue reclaimed its rights. Paradoxically, this long period of abandonment proved to be a blessing: sheltered from synthetic products and the excesses of intensive farming, the soils regenerated and welcomed exceptional biodiversity. It was on this living and preserved land that Jean-Emmanuel Parcé turned his gaze around 2015–2016.

Jean-Emmanuel Parcé comes from a Catalan winegrowing family: the Parcé family runs Domaine de la Rectorie in Banyuls, one of the great references for Roussillon wines. But it is the desire to explore other grape varieties, other terroirs and other expressions that drives him. Guided by Laurent Vaillé, the founder of la Grange des Pères in Aniane, considered one of the great Languedoc estates, Jean-Emmanuel set his sights on these 10 hectares of garrigue to be cleared. The venture is a collective one: his father Thierry, his sister Jeanne, his brother-in-law Xavier, as well as François Dauvergne and Jean-François Ranvier joined the project. In 2017, after a titanic effort of clearing and planting, the estate came to life. As a tribute to the former landowner, his first wines bear the name "Jourde", "thus reviving his former estate."

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine La Chapelle Saint-Mathieu

The Domaine La Chapelle Saint-Mathieu vineyard extends over 10 hectares, located in Aniane, in the Hérault, on the left bank of the Hérault river. This part of western Languedoc, nestled between the Cévennes and the Mediterranean, benefits from a temperate continental climate, with hot, dry summers and cold winters, encouraging slow ripening and wines of fine acidity and freshness. The terroir is of remarkable geological complexity: gravel, pebbles, limestone scree and yellow marl form a mosaic of soils that genuinely recalls the great Burgundian terroirs in their diversity and mineral richness. The vineyard faces the Larzac plateau, in a gently rolling landscape that Jean-Emmanuel compares to Tuscany.

The grape variety selection is boldly non-Roussillon in style: Mourvèdre (dominant for the reds), Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan, and a mosaic of white varieties for the Jourde Blanc wine. This deliberate choice of varieties different from those worked at La Rectorie reflects Jean-Emmanuel Parcé's spirit of exploration. The vineyard is entirely certified Organic Agriculture, with intensive manual work on these partially sloping plots. The biodiversity inherited from decades of abandonment is carefully preserved.

Winemaking at Domaine La Chapelle Saint-Mathieu

The winemaking philosophy of La Chapelle Saint-Mathieu is one of precision and absolute respect for the terroir, in the tradition of la Grange des Pères and la Rectorie. Harvesting is done by hand. For the red wines, winemaking involves ageing in French oak barrels, for 14 months for the flagship La Chapelle Saint-Mathieu wine. For the Jourde Rouge, ageing is shorter, preserving the freshness brought by the Carignan and the fruity expression of the Mourvèdre. For the Jourde Blanc, winemaking is carefully managed to preserve the delicate aromas of this "mosaic of grape varieties", with good natural acidity. The wines express "the finesse and complexity" of the Aniane terroir, in an elegant and gastronomic style.

The wines of Domaine La Chapelle Saint-Mathieu

Jourde Blanc (Vin de France): A white wine made from a "mosaic of white grape varieties" planted on the estate's varied terroirs. Named in homage to former owner Yves Jourde, whose land was purchased and replanted. A dry white wine "of a delicate style", with "good acidity" and "a result that makes your mouth water." Floral and fruity aromas, a fresh and precise palate. An original and rare white wine in the Languedoc context, demonstrating the potential of this terroir for white wines. The estate's most exclusive and most original wine.

Jourde Rouge (IGP Pays d'Hérault): A red wine made from a blend of Mourvèdre, Cabernet Sauvignon and Carignan, aged in French oak barrels for approximately 12 months. "The attack is frank, followed by a persistent and silky grain of finesse. The small red and dark fruits are vibrant on the nose and on the palate. A perfect balance." The freshness brought by the Carignan balances the richness of the Mourvèdre and the structure of the Cabernet Sauvignon. The entry-level wine into the world of the flagship wine, approachable and indulgent, capable of evolving for 5 to 8 years.

La Chapelle Saint-Mathieu Rouge (IGP Pays d'Hérault): The estate's greatest red wine and most ambitious expression. A blend dominated by Mourvèdre, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Carignan, aged for 14 months in French oak barrels. "On the nose, one senses crushed blackcurrant and other dark fruits, then spices and wafts of garrigue. The palate is balanced by the freshness brought by the Carignan." A powerful and elegant red wine expressing all the richness of the gravelly and marly terroir of Aniane. Ageing potential of 10 to 15 years. The wine whose labels bear the paintings of Jean-Emmanuel Parcé, marking the artistic and personal character of this project.
