Wines as close to nature as possible on an exceptional terroir
Domaine Mayard, founded by Arthur and Hugo Mayard, represents the 6th generation of winemakers established in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, a region internationally renowned for its great wines. Created in 2021 following the separation of the Vignobles Mayard, this family estate of twelve hectares stands out for its commitment to living and sustainable agriculture. Far from conventional viticultural practices, the Mayard brothers have chosen to place soil and plant health at the heart of their approach. With particular attention to biodiversity and terroirs, they produce wines of great finesse and remarkable elegance.
Domaine Mayard was born from the division of the Mayard vineyards, an old wine estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, after several generations of winegrowers. In 2021, Arthur and Hugo Mayard took charge of part of the family estate, while Clos du Calvaire, the other part, remained under the direction of a cousin. Upon their establishment, the two brothers undertook to modernize their approach while remaining faithful to the region's winemaking traditions. Their ambition is to produce wines that reflect the best of each vintage, while respecting the particularities of their terroirs.
Domaine Mayard extends over approximately twelve hectares, including ten hectares on the prestigious Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. These wine lands are spread over four distinct plots, located in renowned localities: Grand Coulet, Les Serres, La Crau Est and Le Pointu. These parcels are located in the communes of Sorgues, Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Courthézon, thus offering a diversity of soils and microclimates that influence the quality and character of the wines produced.
The terroirs of Châteauneuf-du-Pape are particularly varied. Grand Coulet is characterized by rounded pebbles, storing the sun's heat during the day and releasing it to the vines at night. La Crau Est, on the other hand, is a sandy terroir, bringing finesse and elegance to the wines, while Le Pointu, where the Mourvèdre vines are planted, stands out for the complexity of its clay-limestone soils.
The estate's vines are mainly composed of historic Châteauneuf-du-Pape grape varieties: Grenache, Mourvèdre, Cinsault and Syrah. A distinctive feature of Domaine Mayard lies in the advanced age of its vines, with Grenache plants sometimes reaching over 120 years old. These old vines, deeply rooted in the soil, give the wines unparalleled complexity and depth.
Arthur and Hugo Mayard have adopted a traditional and respectful approach to winemaking, centered on the natural expression of terroir. The estate favors manual harvesting, a crucial step in selecting the best grapes picked at full maturity. The bunches are partially destemmed, and fermentations take place using indigenous yeasts naturally present on the grapes. This method preserves the authenticity of the aromas and respects the wine's identity.
The cuvées of Domaine Mayard are vinified in truncated vats, made from three different materials: concrete, wood and stainless steel. Each material brings specific qualities to vinification and aging, allowing the process to be adapted to each parcel and each vintage. Macerations last approximately 40 days, following a gentle grape infusion technique, in order to slowly extract aromas, tannins and color, while preserving the elegance of the wines.
The wine aging process takes place in two stages: first in wooden vats for one year, then in concrete vats for an additional six months. This method brings complexity and balance, while refining the tannins and respecting the freshness of the aromas. No sulfur is added during fermentation, making the wines even purer and more respectful of the original fruit.
Domaine Mayard distinguishes itself through its limited but high-quality production. In Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the Mayard brothers have chosen to offer a single cuvée per color, one red and one white, representing the best of each vintage. This choice allows them to focus their efforts on producing exceptional blended wines, highlighting the specificities of their terroirs and the potential of the cultivated grapes.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge: Made from a blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre, Cinsault and Syrah, this wine reveals great elegance with complex aromas of ripe red fruits, dried flowers and orange zest. The palate is silky, with a fine structure and well-integrated tannins. This Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a wine of remarkable finesse that evolves magnificently over time.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc: Produced in small quantities, this cuvée highlights white grape varieties typical of the region such as Clairette, Roussanne and Grenache Blanc. The wine is characterized by a beautiful freshness and minerality that reflect the sandy terroir of certain parcels. On the palate, it stands out with its floral aromas and citrus notes, with a long and elegant finish.
In addition, the estate also offers a Côtes-du-Rhône cuvée, a fruity and fresh wine, ideal for discovering the craftsmanship of the Mayard brothers. Finally, the estate is working on a Lirac Blanc cuvée which, although less known than Châteauneuf-du-Pape, is on its way to becoming a reference wine.
Domaine Mayard, led by Arthur and Hugo, has quickly become an essential reference in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Their commitment to environmentally respectful viticulture, their attention to terroirs and vines, as well as their natural approach to winemaking, make their wines creations of great elegance. With cuvées of exceptional quality, Domaine Mayard establishes itself as an estate to watch very closely in the years to come.
