History of Champagne Les Frères Mignon

The adventure of Champagne Les Frères Mignon begins in 2015, when Florent and Julien Mignon, then aged 28 and 24 respectively, decide to take over the family wine heritage located in Cramant, on the legendary Côte des Blancs. For decades, their family had chosen to deliver its grapes to the great Champagne houses through the local cooperative, perpetuating a vine-growing expertise without signing its own bottles. Driven by the desire to reconnect with their great-grandfather's winemaking tradition, the two brothers set about building their own cellar in Avize, completed just in time for the 2016 harvest.

The first bottles reached the market in 2019 and immediately revealed the talent of this new estate. Florent takes charge of the winemaking with a minimalist approach, while Julien devotes himself to soil work. Their labels adorned with comic book characters reflect the joyful and complicit spirit of the two brothers, who name each of their barrels after a comic book hero. Behind this assumed lightness lies a rare ambition in Champagne: to produce terroir wines of great purity, acclaimed since their very beginnings by the most discerning enthusiasts and professionals.

Terroirs and Vines of Champagne Les Frères Mignon

The Champagne Les Frères Mignon vineyard covers approximately 8.5 hectares, spread across four iconic villages in the Champagne region. The vast majority of the plantings, nearly 90%, consist of Chardonnay in the communes of Cramant and Avize, classified Grand Cru at 100%, as well as in the village of Cuis, classified Premier Cru. The remaining 10% comprises Pinot Noir grown on the clay-limestone slopes of Cumières, in the Marne Valley, complemented by a few plots in Damery. This patchwork of plots gives the estate a remarkable range of expressions, where the chalky soils of the Côte des Blancs meet the generous fruitiness of the Marne.

Inherited across several generations, the vineyard benefits from an exceptional genetic heritage, with ancient mass selections, including some vines planted as early as 1974. The entire operation is run organically, with a transition towards biodynamics that places respect for living matter at the heart of the approach. The soils are worked in depth by Julien, without herbicides or synthetic chemical inputs, in order to preserve microbial life and allow the mineral signature of each lieu-dit to express itself. This demanding philosophy, combined with controlled yields and entirely manual harvesting, guarantees raw material of impeccable quality.

Winemaking at Champagne Les Frères Mignon

In the cellar, Florent Mignon adopts a deliberately low-interventionist winemaking approach, faithful to the estate's natural philosophy. Almost all of the cuvées are crafted plot by plot, in order to preserve the identity of each terroir. Fermentations are carried out using only indigenous yeasts, in oak barrels of various sizes (228, 350, 500 and 600 litres), complemented by large casks and a few stainless steel tanks used to bring freshness. Malolactic fermentation is not sought after but remains free, which allows the wines to retain a characteristic tension and liveliness.

The ageing on fine lees generally lasts between 8 and 12 months in wood, before disgorgement under cork and a long ageing on laths of up to 48 to 65 months depending on the cuvée. The wines undergo neither fining nor filtration, and sulphites are added only very sparingly to the musts. Dosages are deliberately very low, most often around 1.6 g/l in Extra Brut, to reveal the purity of the fruit and the mineral depth specific to each plot. The estate has also invested in photovoltaic panels to achieve energy self-sufficiency in the cellar, reflecting a consistent environmental commitment.

The Cuvées of Champagne Les Frères Mignon

L'Aventure, Extra Brut Premier Cru Blanc de Blancs: a true identity card of the estate, this signature cuvée blends Chardonnays from the three historic villages of the Côte des Blancs (Avize, Cramant and Cuis). Vinified without malolactic fermentation and dosed at 1.6 g/l, it captivates with its fine bubble, its nose of citrus and brioche, its taut, fresh and energetic palate, sublimated by a chalky and saline finish. A joyful and precise champagne, perfect as an aperitif.

Cuis Terroir "Les Nogers", Extra Brut Premier Cru Blanc de Blancs: from a mass-selection Chardonnay plot planted in 1974 on the lieu-dit Les Nogers, this single-plot cuvée highlights the crystallinity and freshness of the Cuis terroir. The palate, mouth-watering and straight, unfolds a pure minerality, notes of lemon and white flowers, carried by a zesty acidity of great elegance.

Cramant Terroir "Le Bateau", Extra Brut Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs: this 100% Chardonnay comes from the superb lieu-dit Le Bateau, east-facing exposure, where chalk comes to the surface and gives the wines a rare saline depth. The vines, approximately 70 years old and from mass selection, are vinified in barrels for around ten months, then aged for a long time on laths (up to 65 months for the 2018). The result is a broad, vibrant Grand Cru with a creamy texture and an interminable finish.

Avize Terroir "Chemin de Paradis", Extra Brut Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs: from a prestigious plot with an evocative lieu-dit name, this Grand Cru cuvée reveals the nobility of Avize Chardonnay. Aged in oak barrels, it combines power and finesse, with a complex nose of fresh almond, ripe white fruits and chalk, followed by a dense, deep and magnificently saline palate.

Cumières Terroir, Extra Brut Premier Cru: the only cuvée dominated by Pinot Noir, sometimes complemented by Meunier and Chardonnay, it comes from a single plot on the clay-limestone slopes of Cumières, in the Marne Valley. Vinified with rigour and aged for a long time on lees, it reveals a fruity and structured character, with aromas of ripe peach, yellow apple, candied citrus and subtle smoky notes. Enveloping palate, fine mousse, precise and mineral finish.

Coteaux Champenois Blanc: a rare still wine, crafted from Chardonnays from the Côte des Blancs, it offers a crystalline expression of the chalky terroir. The nose blends lemon, green apple, white flowers and a hint of linden blossom, while the palate, fine and taut, expresses all the mineral purity of Cramant and its neighbours.

Coteaux Champenois Rouge: produced in small quantities from Pinot Noir from Cumières, this still red wine captivates with its vibrant fruit, delicate structure and typically Champenois freshness. A rare and delicious postcard from this great terroir of the Marne Valley, a testament to the diversity of expressions cultivated by Florent and Julien Mignon.
