Champagne Tasting, Maison Drappier

Tasting report at the Maison de Champagne Drappier on 05/12/2019

A wonderful tasting that allows us to appreciate the complexity of the soils of this part of the Aube, which are geologically closer to those of Chablis (50km) than those of the Marne.

Wine #1 - Champagne Drappier Clarevallis

• The name comes from the Abbey of Clairvaux (Clara Vallis)
• Blend: Pinot Noir (75%), Chardonnay, Meunier
• Dosage: 4g/L
• Very fresh, quite upright, fruity, anise, a slight hint of bitterness

Wine #2 - Champagne Drappier Brut Nature

• Slightly peppery nose, typical of Pinot Noir from the Aube, the grapes are well ripened which helps balance the wine, its acidity is well integrated

Wine #3 – Champagne Drappier Blanc de Blancs Signature

• Blend: Chardonnay 95%, Pinot Blanc « Blanc Vrai" 5%
• Dosage: 7 g/L
• Creamy, citrus: lemon, floral, a slight bitterness on the finish, the dosage is a touch high for most tasters

Wine #4 – Champagne Drappier Blanc de Blancs – Grand Cru – 2012

• Chardonnay 100%
• Long aging on lees
• Dosage: 6g/L
• Pastry nose, spices, fairly full-bodied wine, complex and autolytic, one of the bottles that showed best that day.

Wine #5 – Champagne Drappier Charles de Gaulle

• Blend: Pinot Noir 80%, Chardonnay 20%
• Dosage: 7g/L
• Peppery nose, slightly vegetal, round and well-balanced palate

Wine #6 – Champagne Drappier Grande Sendrée 2009

• A very distinctive soil due to its ravined nature. The name comes from the ash that was deposited on this site following a fire.
• Blend: Pinot Noir 55%, Chardonnay 45%
• Oak aging + 9 years on lees
• Mineral wine, with the roundness of the vintage, very creamy, distinguished by a finish noticeably longer than all the other cuvées.

Wine #7 - Champagne Drappier Grande Sendrée Rosé 2008

• Rosé de saignée (Pinot Noir) with an addition of Chardonnay!
• Round palate full of small red fruits, creamy with a lovely long finish.
