Champagne Georges Laval in Cumières
In 1996, Vincent Laval took over the family estate in Cumières, located on the right bank of the Marne, 4 km from Épernay. The estate, previously run by his father, had introduced organic viticulture as early as 1971, and Vincent Laval has continued along this path. At the Georges Laval estate, the 3 Champagne grape varieties — Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay — ripen beautifully on the warm chalk slopes of Cumières, facing due south. The blends vary according to the cuvées, each of which has a strong personality. The vineyard covers only 2.5 ha, with plots that have been gradually consolidated. Half of the vineyard is over 30 years old and some vines are over 80 years old, as old vines generally yield grapes of better quality.
The Vincent Laval estate produces a small range of Champagnes vinified in barrel, reflecting the qualitative vision of a particularly gifted winemaker with perfect technical mastery, enabling him to craft beautiful, unadulterated wines that faithfully express the terroir of the Cumières hillsides. From harvest to bottling, the barrels are topped up every week, and the different grape varieties and individual plots, previously vinified separately, are blended before the tirage. The entire production is stored on laths and aged on the lees for 18 to 50 months depending on the cuvée. Riddling is carried out manually on pupitres over approximately thirty days prior to disgorgement. The various cuvées offered by the Georges Laval estate are: The Cumières Premier Cru cuvée, which is a white Champagne blending all 3 grape varieties, harmonious and non-dosé. The Les Chênes cuvée is a great non-dosé Blanc de Blancs Champagne from Georges Laval, characterised by its finesse, complex structure, and mineral, saline persistence. The Les Hautes Chèvres brut nature cuvée is made from Pinot Meunier planted in 1930 and 1971, and delivers a beautiful, complex aromatic palette on the palate, combined with the mineral tension of the terroir. It is a great wine. The Les Long Violes cuvée from the Georges Laval estate is made from Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir from massale selections, and is produced in only 1,500 bottles, aged for at least 50 months on laths. The latest creation from the Laval estate is the Garennes cuvée, born of Pinot Meunier from the Chambrecy terroir blended with reserve wines from Cumières; it is a beautiful, fruity Champagne to which barrel ageing has brought body, roundness and intensity. All of the Champagnes from Georges Laval are vinous, with remarkable density and salinity, and enhanced by perfectly integrated oak. It is recommended to cellar them for a few years (4 to 10 years), so that they can develop and deliver an even more accomplished expression. Given their vinous character, we recommend not serving the Champagnes from the Georges Laval estate too cold, and allowing them to breathe or, if appropriate, to be decanted.
