Cordon Rouge, the symbol of the house
For nearly two centuries, Maison Mumm has embodied excellence, innovation and refinement in the world of Champagne. Founded in 1827 in Reims, this legendary house is the fruit of ancestral expertise and a constant pursuit of quality. Synonymous with elegance and celebration, Mumm has established itself as an essential presence at the world's finest tables. Discover everything that makes this house an icon of Champagne.
The history of Maison Mumm begins well before 1827, the official date of its founding. The roots of the Mumm family date back to the 12th century, where it distinguished itself through a lineage of barons and knights. In 1761, Peter Arnold Mumm, a visionary German, founded a wine business in Cologne, specializing in the production and trading of Rhine Valley wines. His sons, Gottlieb, Jacobus and Philipp, quickly recognized the potential of the sparkling wines of Champagne and settled in Reims in 1827.
From its very beginnings, the Maison adopted a philosophy focused on quality, summarized in Georges Hermann Mumm's motto: "Only the best". This principle guides the evolution of the house, marked by major innovations such as the creation of the famous "Cordon Rouge" in 1876, which became a global symbol of Champagne. Despite historical challenges, notably the expropriations during the First World War, Maison Mumm managed to reinvent itself and rise among the greatest Champagne houses.
Maison Mumm's vineyard spans 218 hectares, of which 160 hectares are classified as Grands Crus. Located at the heart of the most prestigious terroirs in Champagne, these plots express the very essence of the region. Pinot Noir dominates overwhelmingly, representing 78% of the planted grape varieties, particularly in the Montagne de Reims. This grape variety imparts the characteristic power and structure to Mumm's Champagnes.
The exceptional terroirs include the Grand Cru villages of Verzenay, Verzy, Bouzy, Ambonnay, Mailly, Avize and Cramant. These chalky soils, rich in minerals, offer an ideal environment for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, ensuring grapes of exceptional quality. Since 2016, the entire vineyard has benefited from the "Viticulture Durable en Champagne" and "Haute Valeur Environnementale" certifications, reflecting Mumm's commitment to biodiversity and sustainability.
Innovation and respect for tradition define the winemaking process at Maison Mumm. As early as 1827, the house was a pioneer in installing its presses directly in the vineyards, an approach that was rare at the time. This choice guarantees immediate pressing, thus preserving the quality and freshness of the juices.
Winemaking is based on a rigorous selection of grapes and a meticulous separation of plots, allowing the richness of each terroir to be expressed. The cuvées often incorporate a proportion of reserve wines, lending complexity and consistency to the Mumm style. Cellaring, for a minimum of three to four years for the exceptional cuvées, allows refined aromas to develop while preserving the vibrancy of the Champagnes.
The range of Mumm Champagnes stands out for its diversity, meeting the expectations of enthusiasts and seasoned connoisseurs alike.
