History of Domaine Marthe Henry

The story of Domaine Marthe Henry is one of a return to family roots, marked by determination and passion. Granddaughter of Pierre Boillot, a great winemaker from Meursault who passed away in 2004 after more than 50 years devoted to his terroirs, Marthe Henry grew up steeped in this heritage despite a first professional life as a journalist in Paris. In 2013, she decided to leave everything behind to settle in Meursault alongside her grandmother, completed a training course at the CFPPA de Beaune in work-study at Domaine Jean-Noël Gagnard, then worked as a vineyard labourer at Domaine Rougeot and with Jean-Yves Devevey. In 2017, she launched her micro-négoce with only 12 barrels, selecting grapes from winemaker friends who shared her vision. Today, the estate produces between 20,000 and 30,000 bottles per year in the historic family cellars. Since 2023, Marthe has had the joy of vinifying part of the family vines, thus perpetuating the pioneering spirit of her grandfather, one of the first to bottle his own wines in Meursault. This unique journey makes the Marthe Henry wines the fruit of a living heritage and a resolutely contemporary vision.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Marthe Henry

The terroirs of Domaine Marthe Henry extend across the finest climates of Burgundy, from the clay-limestone soils of the Côte de Beaune to the higher plots of the Hautes-Côtes. Marthe rigorously selects grapes from vines cultivated organically or through sustainable farming by trusted partners: plots in Meursault (including the renowned climat Sous la Velle), Santenay Le Biévaux, Pommard Les Vignots, Aloxe-Corton 1er Cru Les Fournières, Montagny and Hautes Côtes de Beaune. These vines, often planted in the 1970s or earlier, benefit from ideal exposures and a microclimate that impart minerality, tension and depth to the wines. The gradual return to family plots, such as Meursault Charmes and Volnay Santenots-du-Milieu, further reinforces the typicity and singularity of each cuvée. This intimate connection with the unique terroir of Meursault and its surroundings allows the wines of Domaine Marthe Henry to fully express the freshness, complexity and finesse of the great Burgundian terroirs.

Winemaking at Domaine Marthe Henry

Winemaking at Domaine Marthe Henry is based on a minimalist and respectful approach, aimed at enhancing the fruit and the terroir without artifice. Harvesting is done by hand, fermentations take place with indigenous yeasts in oak barrels (predominantly neutral), and ageing continues for a minimum of 18 months without excessive racking. The whites are gently pressed and aged on fine lees to preserve their vibrancy and aromatic purity; some cuvées are even produced without added sulphur during the process, with only a small addition at bottling. The reds benefit from whole-cluster vinification, with gentle vatting and light pump-overs, for a refined extraction and silky tannins. Unfined and unfiltered, the Marthe Henry wines reveal a vibrant energy, a beautiful natural acidity and exceptional drinkability. This artisanal and natural winemaking makes each bottle a faithful reflection of the vintage and the terroir, perfect for lovers of authentic and lively Burgundy wines.

The cuvées of Domaine Marthe Henry

The range of cuvées from Domaine Marthe Henry offers a beautiful diversity, from everyday festive wines to great wines for ageing, all bearing the elegant and pure signature of the house.

Bourgogne La Monatine (white): A vibrant and mineral entry-level wine, with notes of fresh citrus, white flowers and a hint of almond. On the palate, a lively tension and a saline finish make it an ideal companion for aperitifs and fish dishes.

Bourgogne Chardonnay without added sulphur (white): The purist version of white Burgundy, bursting with fruit (green apple, pear, lemon), of crystalline purity and thirst-quenching freshness. Perfect for those seeking natural and light wines.

Hautes Côtes de Beaune Chardonnay (white): More structured, with aromas of white-fleshed fruits, a beautiful roundness and a refreshing acidity. An accessible and versatile wine, offering excellent value for money.

Montagny (white): Rich and expressive, with notes of exotic fruits and light brioche. Its power on the palate is balanced by a beautiful mineral freshness, ideal with poultry in sauce or aged cheeses.

Hautes Côtes de Beaune Pinot Noir (red): Fruity and easy-drinking, with notes of cherry, raspberry and a hint of spice. Supple tannins and a juicy finish: a convivial red.

Santenay Le Biévaux (red): More concentrated, with aromas of black fruits, undergrowth and a beautiful structure. An elegant wine that gains in complexity after a few years of cellaring.

Pommard Les Vignots (red): Full-bodied and refined, with fine tannins and notes of blackberry, liquorice and damp earth. A wine of character that expresses the full nobility of the Pommard terroir.

Aloxe-Corton 1er Cru Les Fournières (red): A Fine Wine for ageing, powerful and complex, with aromas of black cherry, violet and gentle spices. Its depth and length on the palate make it a benchmark among the 1er Crus of the Côte de Beaune.

Pommard 1er Cru (red): Even more intense, with a dense substance, silky tannins and an evolving bouquet towards notes of leather and truffle. An exceptional wine for great occasions.

Meursault Sous la Velle (white): The signature cuvée of the estate, mineral and taut, with aromas of hazelnut, fresh butter and candied citrus. An ample and saline palate that reveals the full greatness of the Meursault terroir.
