History of Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret

The history of Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret dates back to 1620, when the Mongeard family settled in Vosne-Romanée, in the heart of Burgundy's wine region. For over eight generations, this family expertise has been patiently passed down, enriched, and perfected. It was not until 1945 that the estate officially took its current name, when Eugène Mongeard and his wife Edmée Mugneret united their estates and expertise to create a domaine whose reputation continues to grow.

Vincent Mongeard, the current owner, perpetuates this tradition with passion and dedication, overseeing every stage of production, from vineyard to cellar. Under his direction, the estate now spans 30 hectares, with 35 appellations covering some of Burgundy's most prestigious terroirs, notably Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Echezeaux, and Richebourg.

The estate has forged a solid reputation, particularly for its consistency, year after year. Far from resting on "great vintages," the Mongeard family focuses on exemplary regularity. The estate takes pride in producing accessible wines, meeting growing demand for wines that can be enjoyed young, while maintaining excellent aging potential for those who wish to cellar them.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret

Terroir is the very essence of the wines of Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret. Located between the majestic Château du Clos de Vougeot and the town of Nuits-Saint-Georges, in Vosne-Romanée, the estate benefits from a strategic position on exceptional terroirs. The parcels, planted on mid-slopes, enjoy an ideal southeast exposure, providing the vines with optimal sunlight for slow and regular grape ripening. The soils are mainly clay-limestone, a typical terroir of the Côte de Nuits, renowned for producing wines that are both refined and complex.

The 30 hectares of vines, with an average age of 40 years, are carefully cultivated according to the principles of sustainable viticulture. The estate does not purchase any grapes and is entirely dedicated to producing from its own parcels. Pinot Noir reigns supreme for red wines, bringing finesse and depth, while Chardonnay and Aligoté are used for white wines, offering freshness and minerality.

Meticulous vineyard maintenance includes rigorous pruning, green harvesting to regulate yields, and constant attention to grape quality. Each step is performed manually, ensuring that only the finest fruit is harvested for the production of exceptional wines.

Vinification at Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret

At Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret, vinification is an art mastered with precision. Each cuvée is vinified with care, according to the characteristics of the appellation and vintage. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, ensuring strict temperature control for optimal extraction of aromas and tannins. Cold maceration, which often precedes fermentation, allows gentle extraction of phenolic compounds, ensuring beautiful color and aromatic complexity.

Alcoholic fermentation lasts an average of 12 to 15 days, depending on the vintage. Once this stage is complete, gentle pressing is carried out with a pneumatic press, which preserves the wine's finesse by avoiding overly intense extraction of tannins. The wines are then transferred to the cellar by gravity and aged in oak barrels for 18 to 22 months, depending on the cuvées.

The barrels, made from oak sourced from Allier and Nièvre, bring roundness and subtlety to the wine during aging. A portion of the barrels used is new, while the percentage of new oak varies according to the vintage and appellation to avoid over-concentration of woody aromas. Aging is followed by bottling without filtration, in order to preserve the wine's authenticity and aromatic richness. The estate thus guarantees consistent and impeccable quality for each vintage.
