Frequently Asked Questions

The Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier estate was founded in 1863 by Frédéric Mugnier, a liqueur producer based in Dijon, who acquired the Château de Chambolle-Musigny and its first vineyard plots. After a period of tenant farming entrusted to major Burgundian négociants, it was in 1985 that Frédéric Mugnier, an engineer by training and former commercial pilot, took back the reins of the family estate to restore it to its full splendour. A patient reconquest that has left a profound mark on the viticultural history of the Côte de Nuits.

For enthusiasts looking to select the finest bottles from the Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier estate, certain vintages stand out clearly. Among the most remarkable years for red wines are 1999, 2002, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2015, 2019 and 2020. The 2015 Musigny in particular received perfect scores from the world's most renowned international critics, illustrating the level of excellence this estate can achieve in great vintages.

Le Clos de la Maréchale is one of the most sought-after cuvées from the Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier. It is a 9-hectare 76-are parcel constituting the largest monopole in the Côte d'Or, meaning an appellation belonging to a single, unique owner. Exclusive property of the Mugnier family since 1902, this clos was leased for 53 years before being reintegrated into the domaine in 2004, making it a cuvée with a particularly singular history and naturally limited quantities.

The Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier offers an exceptional range of wines centered on the most prestigious terroirs of Burgundy. Among the flagship cuvées are the Musigny Grand Cru from a 1.14-hectare plot, the Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru, as well as two highly sought-after Premiers Crus: Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses and Les Fuées. The domaine also vinifies the Nuits-Saint-Georges Clos de la Maréchale, a monopole of nearly 10 hectares reintegrated into the domaine in 2004.

The finesse and elegance characteristic of the Chambolle-Musigny from Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier make it a gastronomy wine par excellence. It pairs ideally with refined dishes such as veal fillet, poultry in sauce, or aged cheeses. To fully reveal its delicate aromas, it is recommended to serve it between 14 and 16°C and to decant it slightly, especially when it is still young.

The wines from Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier are among the most age-worthy Burgundies. The Clos de la Maréchale requires a few years of cellaring before it fully expresses itself, developing a characteristic floral profile with notes of raspberry, iris, and white lilac. For the grand crus such as Musigny or Bonnes-Mares, a patience of 10 to 20 years after the harvest is often rewarded with exceptional complexity and depth.

History of Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier

The history of Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier begins in 1863, when Frédéric Mugnier, a liqueur producer from Dijon, acquired the Château de Chambolle-Musigny and its first vineyard plots. At the dawn of the twentieth century, the estate extended over nearly 20 hectares, covering the prestigious terroirs of Chambolle-Musigny and Nuits-Saint-Georges. The wines, then marketed under the name « Château Chambolle-Musigny », drew inspiration from Bordeaux traditions before the advent of the Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) system in 1936.

After decades of joint management alongside the liqueur business, the estate went through a difficult period following the Second World War. In 1950, Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier, great-grandson of the founder, sold the spirits company and leased the vineyards to a major négociant in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Faiveley. It was not until 1978 that Jacques-Frédéric resumed direct management of the Chambolle-Musigny plots, marking the beginning of a renaissance.

In 1985, his son Frédéric Mugnier, an engineer and former commercial pilot, took over the estate. In 2004, the return of Clos de la Maréchale, a 9.76-hectare monopole in Nuits-Saint-Georges, expanded the estate from 4 to 14 hectares, cementing its place among Burgundy's great names. Today, Frédéric Mugnier carries on the family legacy with a clear vision: to produce wines that reflect the purity of their terroirs without artifice.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier

Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier spans 14 hectares, of which 13 are dedicated to Pinot Noir and 1 to Chardonnay, primarily in Chambolle-Musigny and Nuits-Saint-Georges. Each plot is carefully tended to best express its unique terroir.

Chambolle-Musigny: The estate owns iconic plots, such as Les Plantes (0.56 ha, Premier Cru declassified to village, planted in 1968–1969) and La Combe d'Orveau (0.77 ha, planted between 1952 and 1998). These vines produce fruity and floral wines, characteristic of the appellation.

Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuées: A 0.71-hectare plot, planted in 1960, located near Bonnes-Mares, yields concentrated and deeply colored grapes, producing full-bodied and mineral wines.

Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses: With 0.53 ha of vines aged 50 to 60 years, this Premier Cru is often compared to a Grand Cru for its richness and delicacy.

Musigny Grand Cru: A 1.14-hectare plot, predominantly planted between 1947 and 1962, located in the « Grand-Musigny », produces one of Burgundy's most prestigious wines.

Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru: A 0.36-hectare plot, between Chambolle-Musigny and Morey-Saint-Denis, yields a robust wine with mineral and earthy notes.

Nuits-Saint-Georges Clos de la Maréchale: This 9.76-hectare monopole, the largest in the Côte d'Or, produces red and white wines of great finesse, marked by structure and longevity.

Nuits-Saint-Georges Clos des Fourches: A cuvée from the young vines of Clos de la Maréchale, more approachable and floral.

The estate's viticulture is environmentally conscious, favoring a reasoned approach. Since 1990, herbicides have been abandoned, and since 1995, insecticides have been replaced by methods such as sexual confusion. Sulfur and copper are used in minimal doses to combat powdery mildew and downy mildew, while manual work and light plowing preserve biodiversity. Mature vines are pruned using the Guyot method, younger ones using the Cordon de Royat method, optimizing balance and the expression of the terroir.

Winemaking at Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier

The winemaking philosophy at Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier is based on minimal intervention to allow the purity of the fruit and terroir to express themselves. The grapes, harvested by hand, are entirely destemmed to preserve the finesse of the aromas. Fermentation takes place in open wooden vats, often over a century old, or in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, ensuring precise control without altering the character of the wine.

Aging takes place in oak barrels, with only 20% new wood to avoid masking the nuances of the terroir. The red wines spend 18 months in barrels, while the white wines benefit from an additional 6 months in vat after barrel aging. No fining or filtration is carried out, preserving the integrity and natural texture of the wines. This approach, combined with rigorous sorting in the vineyard, ensures cuvées of rare elegance, true to their origins.

The Cuvées of Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier

Musigny Grand Cru

From a 1.14-hectare plot in the « Grand-Musigny », this wine is one of Burgundy's gems. The vines, aged 60 to 75 years, produce between 2,000 and 5,000 bottles per year. This Pinot Noir offers a complex aromatic palette, blending red fruits, flowers, and a mineral touch. On the palate, it stands out for its depth, finesse, and an exceptionally long finish. Ideal after 10 years of cellaring, its aging potential is almost unlimited in great vintages.

Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru

Produced from a 0.36-hectare plot, this Grand Cru (900 to 1,500 bottles per year) combines the power of Morey-Saint-Denis with the elegance of Chambolle-Musigny. Its aromas of red fruits, forest floor, and minerality are accompanied by a robust structure, perfect for pairing with rich dishes such as game. Aging of 5 to 10 years is recommended.

Chambolle-Musigny

This village-level cuvée, from the Les Plantes and La Combe d'Orveau plots (3,000 to 7,000 bottles), charms with its fruity and floral bouquet. Its supple structure and long finish make it an approachable wine from its youth, while offering an aging potential of at least 10 years.

Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuées

With 1,500 to 3,500 bottles per year, this Premier Cru (0.71 ha, vines from 1960) expresses marked minerality and notes of dark fruits. Its full-bodied and forthright palate requires 5 to 20 years of cellaring to fully blossom.

Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses

This exceptional wine (900 to 2,700 bottles, 0.53 ha) is often compared to a Grand Cru. Its aromas of flowers and red fruits, its deep texture, and its airy delicacy make it a true masterpiece. Aging of 7 to 50 years reveals its full potential.

Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale (Red)

This 9.76-hectare monopole produces a straight and structured wine, with floral notes (raspberry, iris, white lilac) and excellent longevity. With an average vine age of around 55 years, it requires a few years of cellaring to fully express itself.

Nuits-Saint-Georges Clos des Fourches

From the young vines of Clos de la Maréchale, this village-level cuvée is more approachable, with a floral nose and a fluid texture, ideal for early drinking.

Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale (White)

Relaunched in 2005 through the technique of top-grafting, this Chardonnay (2,000 to 3,000 bottles) offers vibrant minerality, aromas of pear and exotic fruits, and excellent longevity.

Chambolle-Musigny « Trente Deux »

A rare cuvée born in 2016, resulting from a blend of old Musigny vines and the Chambolle Les Plantes plot, following a devastating frost. This exceptional wine embodies the estate's innovation and excellence.

Its wines, from Musigny Grand Cru to Clos de la Maréchale, captivate with their elegance and authenticity. Let yourself be seduced by these Burgundian gems and add a touch of elegance to your cellar!
