2015 Vintage

The main wines of Bordeaux will soon be released, but it should be noted that 2015 is generally very good. In Burgundy, the red wines of 2015 in 1er and Grand crus will be very great. In white Burgundy, the Maconnais (Pouilly Fuissé) is very promising and seems to represent a good alternative (just like Saint Aubin in Côte de Beaune). The Crus du Beaujolais are exceptional in 2015 and should be cellared. In Northern Rhône, Condrieu, Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage will be sought after, but one should not overlook the St Joseph or Crozes-Hermitage. In the Loire Valley, Bourgueil 2015, Chinon 2015 and Saumur Champigny 2015 as well as Sancerre rouge 2015 are at the top. For a sweet or dessert wine from 2015, one should turn to Vouvray (Foreau and Huet) which offer great 2015s. Finally, in Alsace, why not the superb Pinot Gris 2015, or rediscover the Pinot Noir d'Alsace from a vintage of great maturity?

Our opinion on the 2015 vintage

The 2015 vintage in Bordeaux is undoubtedly a great vintage, with a very hot and sunny early summer (June/July), punctuated in early August by the long-awaited rain that unblocked véraison. The month of August was slightly wetter than usual, especially in the north of the Médoc. The 2015 red wines from the Right Bank are magnificent and many estates in Pomerol and Saint-Émilion produced very great bottles. The Margaux appellation dominates very slightly in the Médoc, but the great terroirs of Pauillac, Saint-Julien and Saint-Estèphe are very close with great red wines as well. In Pessac-Léognan, Haut-Brion and La Mission Haut-Brion 2015 dominate, and the 2015 red wine bottles are of a superior level compared to the white wines. In Burgundy, the summer was very dry and sunny, and the wines of 2015 are excellent. The red wines from the Côte de Nuits are deep, smooth, balanced and elegant in estates that managed to limit yields. In the Côte de Beaune, the Corton sector produced superb red and white wines (Corton-Charlemagne). However, the sunny nature of the vintage can sometimes cause a slight lack of freshness among the whites from the Côte de Beaune (Chassagne-Montrachet sector). It should be noted that Beaujolais produced an exceptional 2015 vintage, on par with 2009 (or even better). In the Northern Rhône Valley, the 2015 vintage is excellent, especially on the Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu and Hermitage side. The Saint-Joseph wines are very successful as well, and the rains in August after the July heatwave were beneficial. In the Southern Rhône, 2015 will be slightly more heterogeneous, but it is a very good vintage. For Loire wines, summer temperatures were less scorching than in the east, and the year will be that of Pinot Noirs in Sancerre (exceptional reds) and Cabernet Franc (Bourgueil, Chinon, Saumur-Champigny). The 2015 white Anjous are very good, and for sweet wines, Vouvray is in the spotlight. In Alsace, 2015 is very successful thanks to the beneficial mid-August rains, with remarkable Pinot Noirs and Gris, and a late season rather favorable to the production of sweet wines (VT and SGN).
