Domaine d'Auvenay and Domaine Leroy are two distinct estates, both run by Lalou Bize-Leroy, but with very different identities. Domaine Leroy, located in Vosne-Romanée, draws on a more extensive vineyard and offers a wider range of cuvées sourced primarily from the Côte de Nuits. Domaine d'Auvenay, for its part, is an even more intimate and family-run operation, with an even more parcel-by-parcel production and even more restricted volumes. Both estates share the same biodynamic philosophy and the same absolute commitment to quality, but Auvenay is often considered Lalou Bize-Leroy's most personal and most confidential project.

Domaine d'Auvenay vinifies mainly grand crus and premiers crus from the Côte de Beaune and the Côte de Nuits. Among the most emblematic white appellations are the Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru, the Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru, and an anthology-worthy Meursault Charmes Premier Cru. On the red side, the domaine produces notably Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru and Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru. All of these cuvées are vinified with the utmost respect for the terroir, using certified biodynamic farming, which contributes to their singularity and their highly precise aromatic profile.

The choice of vintage from Domaine d'Auvenay depends above all on the style sought and the type of cuvée envisaged. For the great whites such as Chevalier-Montrachet, sunny vintages offer remarkable aromatic richness and tension. For the reds such as Mazis-Chambertin, the 2015 and 2010 vintages are particularly acclaimed for their depth and ageing potential. As a general rule, the wines of Domaine d'Auvenay benefit from being cellared for several years after their release to fully express the complexity and minerality characteristic of the terroirs worked by Lalou Bize-Leroy.

The white wines of Domaine d'Auvenay, whether the Chevalier-Montrachet or the Meursault Premier Cru, are ideally served between 12 and 14 °C in order to preserve their mineral freshness while allowing their aromatic complexity to express itself. The reds, such as the Bonnes-Mares or the Mazis-Chambertin, are best enjoyed between 15 and 17 °C after decanting for one to two hours for younger vintages. For storage, a cellar maintained between 12 and 14 °C, away from light and vibrations, with a humidity level of around 70%, is essential to preserve the integrity of these exceptional bottles over the long term.

History of Domaine d'Auvenay

The history of Domaine d'Auvenay begins in 1868 with the founding of Maison Leroy, a négociant house created by François Leroy, the ancestor of Lalou Bize-Leroy. It was in 1955 that Lalou, then aged 23, joined the family business, defying the conventions of a wine world then dominated by men. Her passion for wine, inherited from her father Henri Leroy, co-owner of the mythical Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, led her to become fully involved in the négociant business and, later, in the management of Romanée-Conti from 1974 to 1992. In 1988, Lalou marked a decisive turning point by founding Domaine Leroy and developing Domaine d'Auvenay, named after her fortified farmhouse in Saint-Romain. This estate, which she inherited in 1980 and of which she acquired full ownership in 1990, became the stage for her most audacious ambitions. With an uncompromising vision, Lalou Bize-Leroy applied biodynamic practices from the very beginning, transforming this small estate into a world reference. Today, the wines of Domaine d'Auvenay are cult objects, sought after by collectors and enthusiasts for their rarity and exceptional quality.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine d'Auvenay

Domaine d'Auvenay extends over 3.87 hectares, spread across 16 prestigious appellations, including grand crus and iconic terroirs of the Côte de Beaune and the Côte de Nuits. Among the jewels of the estate are the white grands crus such as Chevalier-Montrachet, Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet and Bâtard-Montrachet, as well as the red grands crus Bonnes-Mares and Mazis-Chambertin. The plots, often minuscule, receive meticulous care, with yields deliberately limited to approximately 15 hectolitres per hectare, well below Burgundian standards.

Lalou Bize-Leroy's biodynamic approach is at the heart of the vineyard management. Each vine is treated as an individual, with replacements carried out exclusively through mass selection to preserve genetic diversity. The vines, some of which are over a century old, are cultivated without herbicides or pesticides, encouraging rich biodiversity in the soils. The braiding technique, in which shoots are wound rather than pruned, respects the plant's natural cycle, producing concentrated and aromatic grapes. Herbal infusions made from plants such as chamomile, comfrey and rosemary are used to strengthen the vitality of the vines, turning the vineyard into a truly living garden. This philosophy, rooted in respect for all living things, gives the wines of Domaine d'Auvenay a unique energy and purity, a true reflection of their exceptional terroirs.

Winemaking at Domaine d'Auvenay

Winemaking at Domaine d'Auvenay is an art in which every detail counts. The harvests, exclusively manual, are carried out by a dedicated team of several dozen people who rigorously sort each bunch. The grapes, transported by refrigerated lorry at 5°C, preserve their freshness until they reach the cellar. The whites, principally from Chardonnay, are pressed with great care, often using a manual press for the smaller plots such as Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet. The reds, from Pinot Noir, undergo a berry-by-berry sorting, during which the central rachis is removed by hand to preserve the integrity of the berries and avoid unwanted tannins.

Fermentations take place in bespoke wooden vats, adapted to each plot, using indigenous yeasts to respect the identity of the terroir. The wines are aged in new barrels from Tonnellerie François Frères, selected for their fine grain and light toasting, ensuring perfect integration of the wood. The whites rest on their lees for sometimes two winters, while the reds are racked after malolactic fermentation and bottled according to the lunar calendar. With no fining or filtration, the wines retain their authenticity, offering unmatched texture and complexity. This artisanal approach — true haute couture of wine — makes the cuvées of Domaine d'Auvenay absolute references in Burgundy.
