Jean Michel Dupré

Wines from Domaine Jean-Michel Dupré: buy at the best price

Jean-Michel Dupré is one of the most original and captivating figures in the Beaujolais vineyard. Perched above Beaujeu, in the commune of Les Ardillats, at the entrance of the Haut Beaujolais route, he built his estate almost entirely from scratch starting in 1989, from a farmhouse and 2 hectares of vines passed down by his father. "I had to face a difficult choice: the farm or the vineyard. My attraction to the vine and wine became clearly apparent." He converted the agricultural buildings into a vat room and set out in search of plots of old vines well situated in Beaujolais, Beaujolais-Villages, Régnié and Morgon. Today, he tends 14 hectares of vines whose absolute distinguishing feature is their exceptional age: the youngest are 50 years old, and a great many plots are a hundred years old or more. This obsession with old vines, sparked by the passion of his uncle Louis-Martin, who revealed to him the singularity of Beaujolais crus, has become the estate's signature. Having quickly converted to organic farming and additive-free winemaking, Jean-Michel is now passing on his passion to his daughter Cindy, who carries on the tradition under the Domaine Centenaire label.

History of Domaine Jean-Michel Dupré

Jean-Michel Dupré is a child of the land, immersed from childhood in the agricultural life of the commune of Les Ardillats, at the entrance to the Haut Beaujolais. His family farmed mixed crops, with a few vineyard plots. When the question of succession of the family estate arose, Jean-Michel made a courageous choice: to stake everything on the vine, convert the farm buildings into a winery and set out in search of the best old-vine plots available in the area. His uncle, Louis-Martin, initiated him into a passion for the crus of Beaujolais and the singularity of each appellation, passing on to him a taste for wines of character and terroir.

From 1989 onwards, Jean-Michel began acquiring plots, always prioritising vine age and aspect. Over the years, the estate reached its current 14 hectares, spread across Beaujolais, Beaujolais-Villages, Régnié and Morgon. His philosophy was quickly established: organic farming, vinification without additives, the fewest interventions possible to allow the old vines to express themselves freely. His cuvées, named in reference to the year the vines were planted, embody this obsession with ampelographic heritage. Jean-Michel Dupré pays tribute to his uncle Louis-Martin by collaborating with fellow vine growers under the label "Les Vieilles Vignes du Père Martin", making it possible to discover the singularity of each Beaujolais appellation. His daughter Cindy is gradually taking over the reins with Domaine Centenaire, ensuring the family succession.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Jean-Michel Dupré

The great singularity of Domaine Jean-Michel Dupré lies in the exceptional age of its vines. As Jean-Michel himself says: "the vines are a bit like human beings, they can live up to 100 years or more, and the older the vine, the more concentrated the juice will be." His youngest vines are 50 years old. Entire plots contain plants that were planted before the Second World War, or even before the First: vines from 1948, 1940, 1935, 1929 and even 1911, all Gamay noir on the granite terroirs characteristic of Beaujolais. These old vines, with their naturally very low yields, concentrate within each berry an aromatic density and complexity that young vines simply cannot achieve.

The vineyard spans several Beaujolais appellations, all on granite soils. In Beaujolais-Villages, the Tour Bardon plot (11 acres), on sandy granite soils, is home to the 1940 vines. In Régnié, the Haute Ronze plot is planted with old vines, the oldest of which date back to 1948. In Morgon, two named sites are worked: Le Griottier and Grands Cras, on the clay mixed with schist and granite characteristic of the Morgon terroir. The entire estate is farmed organically, without herbicides, with manual soil cultivation.

Vinifications of Domaine Jean-Michel Dupré

Jean-Michel Dupré vinifies in the pure Beaujolais tradition, with the minimum of interventions possible. Harvesting is manual, with whole clusters for the cru cuvées (Morgon, Régnié), using traditional semi-carbonic maceration. No oenological additives, indigenous yeasts, no chaptalization. Ageing takes place in concrete vats or oak barrels depending on the cuvée, for varying periods. His Beaujolais-Villages whites are vinified in stainless steel vats. The Beaujolais Nouveaux are bottled quickly, in keeping with the spirit of classic primeur wines, but with a concentration and complexity well above average thanks to the exceptional age of the vines that produce them.

The cuvées of Domaine Jean-Michel Dupré

Beaujolais Nouveau Vignes de 1929: An iconic and extraordinary Beaujolais Nouveau cuvée, sourced from Gamay planted in 1929, making these vines over 95 years old. Produced in very limited quantities, it demonstrates that a Beaujolais Nouveau can reach an incomparable level of concentration and complexity when sourced from century-old vines. Highly expressive aromas of fresh red fruits, a palate of remarkable density and depth for a primeur wine. The most confidential and admirable Beaujolais Nouveau from the estate.

Beaujolais Vignes de 1911: A confidential and ultra-rare cuvée sourced from Gamay planted in 1911, making these vines over 110 years old, among the oldest Gamay vines in France. Micro-production, just a few thousand bottles. A red wine of extraordinary concentration and depth, with intense aromas of dark fruits, spices and a deep granite minerality. A collector's wine for enthusiasts of the oldest vines in Beaujolais.

Beaujolais-Villages Vignes de 1940: A red cuvée sourced from Gamay planted in 1940 on the Tour Bardon plot, on sandy granite soils. Vines over 80 years old. "An incredible concentration resulting from low yields and more expressive fruit." A red robe with violet hues, a nose of expressive red fruits and spices, a supple and fresh palate, melted tannins. "A supple and fresh cuvée to enjoy with friends." Remarkable value for the age of the vines.

Beaujolais-Villages Terre Noire Vieilles Vignes: A red Beaujolais-Villages cuvée sourced from old Gamay vines on the estate's black granite soils. An ample and fleshy style for a Beaujolais-Villages, with aromas of stewed red fruits, a round and generous palate. The estate's most opulent Beaujolais-Villages cuvée.

Beaujolais-Villages Blanc La Ronze Blanche: The estate's only white cuvée, sourced from a white variety (Chardonnay or another authorised white variety) cultivated on the granite terroirs of Les Ardillats. A dry, fruity and floral white wine, ideal as an aperitif or with light dishes.

Régnié Vignes de 1948: A red cuvée from the Régnié appellation, the tenth cru of Beaujolais, sourced from Gamay planted in 1948 on the estate's plots at Régnié-Durette. Vines over 75 years old. A red wine of fine expression of the granite and schistous terroir of Régnié: aromas of small red fruits (raspberry, strawberry), a light and fresh palate, fine tannins. The most delicate and most immediately accessible expression among the estate's crus.

Régnié Haute Ronze Vieilles Vignes: A single-parcel red cuvée from Régnié sourced from the Haute Ronze lieu-dit, from vines even older than the Vignes de 1948 cuvée. A more concentrated and deep red wine, with aromas of red and black fruits, an ample and structured palate for the appellation, and an ageing potential of several years. The estate's flagship Régnié cuvée.

Morgon Le Griottier: A red Morgon cuvée sourced from the Le Griottier lieu-dit, on the granite and schist soils characteristic of the appellation. The name evokes the Morello cherry notes that characterise terroir-driven Morgons. A red wine of fine depth and complexity, with aromas of black cherry, raspberry and a schistous mineral touch. CT average of 88.7 on CellarTracker. A classic and elegant Morgon, capable of ageing 5 to 8 years.

Morgon Vignes de 1935 / Morgon Grands Cras: Prestige red cuvées from Morgon, sourced from old Gamay vines aged 90 years and over on the most qualitative named sites of the appellation. The Vignes de 1935 cuvée (4,000 bottles, 1 star in the Guide Hachette 2017) and the Grands Cras cuvée (CT average of 88.4) represent the estate's qualitative pinnacle in Morgon. Red wines of exceptional concentration and complexity for Beaujolais: intense aromas of dark fruits, tobacco and spices, a fleshy and structured palate, robust and melted tannins, a long mineral finish. Great-ageing Morgons, capable of developing over 10 to 15 years under the best conditions.
