Domaine Chamonard: Beaujolais wines with excellent ageing potential
The CHAMONARD estate in Beaujolais is a small family-run property established since the 18th century. Jean-Claude Chanudet, known as "Le Chat", together with his wife Geneviève, took over the estate from his father-in-law in 1989 and he belongs to the first generation of "natural" wine producers, alongside Descombes, Foillard, and Marcel Lapierre.

The vineyard, with a total surface area of 5.5 hectares, is composed of old gamay vines aged 60 to 90 years, located on mid-slopes facing south/southwest. The Morgon parcels are scattered throughout the commune of Villié-Morgon, on soils of decomposed rock and friable schist: le Colombier, Corcelette, les Grands Cras and les Chênes. The Fleurie cuvée from Domaine Chamonard is located in the renowned granite sector of La Madone (whose name comes from the statue of the Virgin perched atop the chapel overlooking the most beautiful hill in Fleurie at 400m altitude). Jean-claude Chanudet cultivates his vines with respect for the environment, while ensuring the optimal quality of his wines. The wines from Domaine Chamonard are characterful wines, rather focused on finesse and balance, yet endowed with surprising longevity. The quality here is recognized, and the estate's wines, which are acknowledged by the specialized press, are increasingly exported. The 0.5-hectare parcel of Fleurie, in the La Madone sector, faces due south, on pink granite terroir from which the vine roots draw their energy to produce a rich wine with mature, concentrated and juicy fruit, with aromas of black fruits and florals, with a dense, round and enveloping palate. The Fleurie can therefore be enjoyed in its youth, but also after appropriate cellaring of 6 to 10 years, which can only improve it and give it additional complexity. Morgon wines are renowned for their aging potential, and at Domaine Chamonard, after long macerations and aging in old barrels, the style of the wines becomes brilliant and precise. The aging capacity of the cuvées is often highlighted by Jean-Claude Chanudet. A bit wild, the nose of the Morgon can prove spirited, and its rich constitution, like the roundness of its fruit, are accompanied by rather fine but present tannins, guaranteeing real aging potential. Moreover, Domaine Chamonard offers old vintages for sale, which allows one to appreciate the accuracy of the reviews concerning wines of 10 years and more, because Domaine Chamonard, by producing wines in such a style, is confident in their ability to express themselves over time and to age with great ease and beauty. This contradicts the preconceived idea that Beaujolais gamays are not made to be kept for long periods…
