Chamonard

The vineyard, with a total surface area of 5.5 ha, is composed of old gamay vines aged 60 to 90 years, situated on mid-slopes with a South/South-West exposure. The plots of Morgon are scattered across the entire commune of Villié-Morgon, on soils of decomposed rock and friable schist: le Colombier, Corcelette, les Grands Cras and les Chênes. The Fleurie cuvée of Domaine Chamonard is located in the renowned granite area of La Madone (whose name comes from the statue of the Virgin perched at the top of the chapel overlooking the most beautiful hill of Fleurie at an altitude of 400 m). Jean-Claude Chanudet cultivates his vines with respect for the environment, while ensuring the optimal quality of his wines. The wines of Domaine Chamonard are wines of character, leaning towards finesse and balance, yet endowed with a surprising longevity. Quality is well recognised here, and the estate's wines, which are acknowledged by the specialist press, are increasingly exported. The 0.5 ha plot of Fleurie, in the La Madone sector, faces due south and sits on a terroir of pink granite from which the vine roots draw their energy to produce a rich wine with mature, concentrated and juicy fruit, featuring aromas of dark fruits and floral notes, with a dense, round and enveloping palate. Fleurie can therefore be enjoyed in its youth, but also after appropriate cellaring of 6 to 10 years, which can only enhance it and add further complexity. The wines of Morgon are renowned for their ageing potential, and at Domaine Chamonard, after long macerations and ageing in old barrels, the style of the wines becomes brilliant and precise. The cellaring capacity of the cuvées is often highlighted by Jean-Claude Chanudet. Somewhat wild, the nose of the Morgon can prove fiery, and its richness of constitution, as well as the roundness of its fruit, are accompanied by rather fine yet present tannins, a testament to its genuine ageing potential. Furthermore, Domaine Chamonard offers old vintages for sale, which makes it possible to appreciate the accuracy of critics' assessments regarding wines of 10 years and older, as Domaine Chamonard, by producing wines of such a style, is confident in their ability to express themselves over time and to age with great ease and beauty. This contradicts the preconceived notion that the gamays of Beaujolais are not made to be kept for a long time…
