Wine 2021 Bourgogne

The 2021 vintage in Burgundy will go down in the annals as a vintage of contrasts: difficult in climatic terms, but generous in finesse and faithfulness to the terroirs. After a mild winter and early budburst at the end of March, intense frosts on the nights of April 6th to 9th (-6/-7°C) ravaged the buds, particularly the chardonnays. Spring and summer were cool, rainy and mild, promoting downy mildew, powdery mildew and botrytis, with high disease pressure. Véraison went well in mid-August, and a mild autumnal September allowed for a traditional harvest, from September 20th to 30th, later than in previous warm years.

Weather Conditions for the 2021 Burgundy Vintage

Yields were devastating, among the lowest in Burgundy’s history: losses of 50 to 80% depending on the vineyard parcel, with tiny volumes (often below 20–25 hl/ha). Without this natural thinning by frost, a generous harvest (40 hl/ha) might have compromised ripeness. Winemakers had to sort meticulously and adapt their winemaking, with long macerations for the reds and extended aging for the whites.

Characteristics of 2021 Burgundy Red Wines

The red wines (Pinot Noir) stand out for their elegance and freshness: less concentrated and lower in alcohol than the 2019–2020 vintages, they offer precise fruit notes (cherry, raspberry), silky, velvety tannins, a slender palate, and classic balance. Appealing when young, they recall the 2013 or 2001 vintages, with an easy-drinking character and faithful expression of terroir (finesse in the Côte de Nuits, structure in Pommard). Quality varies, but the best show promise for aging.

Characteristics of 2021 Burgundy White Wines

The white wines (Chardonnay) shine for their purity and savoriness: generous and floral, with vibrant minerality (Chablis), rounded opulence (Côte de Beaune), and finely etched bitter notes. Balanced, fruity (pear, peach), and true to their origins, they show great aromatic intensity and considerable aging potential, despite the small volumes.

Critics praise a "classic", reassuring vintage after the extreme heat. It is a vintage defined by "attention to detail", rewarding winemakers’ efforts with delicately extracted, easy-drinking wines that express their terroir.
