La Maison Bollinger

La Maison Bollinger was founded in 1829. It is a "small" Champagne House (3 million bottles/year) compared to the leading brands of the LVMH group (Ruinart, Dom Pérignon, Veuve Clicquot, etc.) Located in the Montagne de Reims in Ay, it is one of the rare houses to own the majority of the vineyards used in the production of its Champagne (very little grape purchasing), primarily in Champagne 1er cru and Champagne Grand cru. The blending of the cuvées relies mainly on Pinot Noir (2/3 on average), with aging in barrels and a high proportion of reserve wines. The classic cuvées (Bollinger Special Cuvée, Bollinger Brut Rosé) are considered by enthusiasts to be among the finest non-vintage wines on the market, alongside those of Krug and Charles Heidsieck. These are vinous Champagne wines that can accompany an entire meal, bringing elegance and fruitiness to it. The "Bollinger Grande Année" offers vintage Champagne of rare purity, consistently acclaimed by critics (Bollinger Grande Année 2000 - Robert Parker 93/100, Bollinger Grande Année 2002 - Robert Parker 94/100, RVF 18.5/20, Bollinger Grande Année 2004 - Robert Parker 93/100). As for the Bollinger R.D. cuvées (for Récemment Dégorgé, meaning Recently Disgorged), commercialized since 1967 at the initiative of Mme Bollinger, these are always composed of around twenty grands and premiers crus from Champagne. Betting on extended aging on lees to extract a more complex aromatic bouquet, the house only releases R.D. in vintages deemed exceptional.
