This Saint-Joseph Les Granits 1998 from M. Chapoutier, born on granite in the northern Rhône, offers a Syrah with aromas of blackberry, spices and smoke. A garnet robe, a powerful and silky palate, dense tannins and a persistent finish. Ideal with sauced meats or aged cheeses.
A historic estate rooted in Tain-l'Hermitage, Maison M. Chapoutier has perpetuated since 1808 a winemaking heritage in which terroir dictates every decision.
- Terroir: The granite hillsides of Saint-Joseph, fully south-facing, sculpt Syrahs of vibrant minerality and taut elegance.
- Vinification: A biodynamic approach, manual harvesting and precise ageing to reveal the purity of the fruit and the tension of the soil.
Tasting notes for M. Chapoutier Saint-Joseph Les Granits 1998
To the eye – A deep garnet robe, still dense, with slightly brick-red reflections, betraying a silky maturity and a well-preserved structure.
On the nose – First, aromas of wild blackberry and jammy blackcurrant, followed by notes of liquorice, black pepper and a mineral hint reminiscent of flint, all wrapped in a discreet smokiness.
On the palate – A velvety yet firm texture, carried by a lively acidity and a chalky minerality, with tannins still present but well-integrated, leading to a long and saline finish.
Serve at 16-18°C in a Burgundy-style red wine glass to bring out its full complexity.
Vintage 1998
A northern Rhône vintage marked by generous ripeness and a pronounced tannic structure, ideal for wines intended for cellaring.
- Ageing potential: To be enjoyed until 2028–2030, provided it is stored in a cool cellar (12–14°C) away from light.
