The best dry white wines from Bordeaux (Graves, Sauternes) are located on the Left Bank of the Garonne, south of the city of Bordeaux. Entre-Deux-Mers also produces many white wines, but often simpler wines for everyday consumption. The Graves AOC encompasses the Pessac-Léognan appellation (AOC delimited in 1987, covering 10 communes, which benefits from its own classification grouping the most prestigious terroirs, including only 9 Classified White Growths). The 3 white grape varieties of the Graves vineyards are Sauvignon, Sémillon, and Muscadelle. The best white wines from Graves (Pessac-Léognan) deliver delicate notes of citrus and acacia honey and can age for 10 to 20 years; they sometimes need time to integrate their barrel-aging (woody) notes. The great white wines of Pessac-Léognan are excellent with lobster or spiny lobster (which can easily handle their power), and are best enjoyed at around 10/11°C.

Bordeaux Dry White Wines

Bordeaux Blanc

The Bordeaux Blanc appellation includes dry, semi-dry, or sweet white wines produced on approximately 7,000 hectares throughout the Bordeaux vineyard. Made primarily from Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle grape varieties, these wines can be complemented by small quantities of Ugni Blanc or Colombard. Depending on the terroir, composed of gravelly, limestone, or clay soils, and vinification techniques, Bordeaux Blancs offer a range of styles from fresh and fruity to rich and complex. They are distinguished by aromas of citrus, white flowers, and exotic fruits. The appellation imposes a maximum yield of 67 hl/ha and a minimum alcohol content of 10%. Accessible and versatile, Bordeaux Blanc wines provide an excellent introduction to white Bordeaux wines, perfect for pairing with fish, seafood, or aperitifs.

Graves Blanc

Located south of Bordeaux, the Graves Blanc appellation extends over approximately 611 hectares in the Graves region. These dry white wines are primarily made from Sémillon, which brings finesse and notes of wax and honey, Sauvignon Blanc, for its liveliness and aromas of grapefruit or passion fruit, and Muscadelle, with floral and musky touches, sometimes complemented by Sauvignon Gris. The unique terroir, composed of graves (gravel, pebbles, sand, and clay) and limestone substrates, benefits from a temperate oceanic climate, regulated by the Garonne and the Landes forest. With a maximum yield of 58 hl/ha and a minimum alcohol content of 10.5%, Graves Blancs are characterized by their elegance, roundness, and liveliness. Their aromas of white flowers, citrus, exotic fruits, sometimes mentholated or toasted, offer beautiful complexity, with aging potential for the best cuvées. These wines pair ideally with oysters, grilled fish, or goat cheeses. The best vintages for white Graves wines: 1990, 1994, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2009, 2010...

Pessac-Leognan

Recognized since 1987, the Pessac-Léognan Blanc appellation covers approximately 260 hectares in the northern Graves, in communes such as Pessac, Léognan, and Talence. The main grape varieties are Sauvignon Blanc (47% on average), for its aromatic freshness, Sémillon (52%), for its richness, and Muscadelle or Sauvignon Gris in smaller proportions. The terroir, composed of graves, sands, limestone clays, and rocks, offers excellent drainage under a mild and humid oceanic climate, protected by the Landes forest. Regulations impose a minimum density of 6,500 vines/ha, a maximum yield of 54 hl/ha, and aging until March 15 following the harvest. These wines are distinguished by a clear golden-yellow color, a rich nose of citrus, acacia honey, hazelnut, and toasted bread, and a complex, fresh, and fruity palate with a long finish. Often aged in barrels, they offer aging potential of up to 10 years and pair perfectly with seafood, fish in sauce, or hard cheeses.

Bordeaux Sweet White Wines

Sauternes 

The Sauternes appellation, located in Graves on approximately 2,200 hectares, is world-renowned for its sweet white wines. Covering five communes (Sauternes, Barsac, Bommes, Fargues, and Preignac), it primarily uses Sémillon (75-80%), sensitive to noble rot, Sauvignon Blanc (15-20%), and Muscadelle (5%). The terroir, composed of gravelly-sandy, clay, and limestone soils, benefits from a unique microclimate created by the confluence of the Garonne and Ciron rivers, favoring Botrytis cinerea (noble rot). The latter concentrates sugars in the grapes, producing wines of exceptional aromatic complexity, with notes of honey, apricot, quince, exotic fruits, and spices. Hand-harvested through successive selective pickings, Sauternes require a minimum sugar richness of 221 g/L. Renowned for their longevity and balance between sweetness and acidity, these wines, including the famous Château d'Yquem, sublimely complement foie gras, fruit desserts, or blue cheeses like Roquefort.

Barsac 

The Barsac appellation, located in the Sauternes region on approximately 1,600 hectares, produces sweet white wines of great finesse in the commune of Barsac and four neighboring communes (Bommes, Fargues, Preignac, and Sauternes). The clay-limestone and gravelly terroir favors the development of noble rot, essential for these sweet wines. The main grape varieties are Sémillon, for its roundness, Sauvignon Blanc, for its freshness, and Muscadelle, for its floral notes. Barsac wines are distinguished by their balance between sweetness, acidity, and complexity, with aromas of honey, candied citrus, and apricot. They can be marketed under the Barsac or Sauternes appellation, but Barsac is characterized by particular finesse. These wines are perfect for accompanying desserts or sweet-and-savory dishes.

Loupiac 

Located on the right bank of the Garonne, facing Sauternes, the Loupiac appellation extends over approximately 400 hectares in the eponymous commune. Dedicated to sweet white wines, it uses Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle grape varieties, often affected by noble rot. The clay-limestone and gravelly soils give the wines aromas of honey, candied fruits, and citrus, with beautiful acidity. With strictly regulated yields, Loupiac wines offer excellent value for money compared to more prestigious appellations like Sauternes. They pair wonderfully with fruity desserts or mild cheeses.

Cadillac

The Cadillac appellation, located in the Entre-Deux-Mers on approximately 200 hectares, is dedicated to sweet white wines made from botrytized grapes. Spread across 22 communes, it is based on clay-limestone and gravelly soils. The main grape varieties are Sémillon, dominant for its richness, Sauvignon Blanc, for its freshness, and Muscadelle, for its floral notes. Cadillac wines are distinguished by their balance between sweetness, acidity, and complexity, with aromas of candied fruits, honey, and spices. Their aging potential is often remarkable, making them an ideal choice for lovers of affordable sweet wines.
