Frequently Asked Questions
Château Cheval Blanc holds a unique place in the Saint-Émilion appellation as a former Premier Grand Cru Classé A, the highest distinction in the classification. This exceptional status is explained by a unique terroir on the border of Pomerol, composed of gravel and deep clay, but also by an atypical blend dominated by Cabernet Franc, a grape variety rare at this level of proportion in the Bordeaux region. The result is a wine of remarkable aromatic complexity, combining power and elegance with a finesse rarely matched.

The wines of Château Cheval Blanc are distinguished by an aromatic profile of rare complexity. Dominated by Cabernet Franc, they develop characteristic notes of violet, red and black fruits, liquorice and soft spices, with age revealing nuances of truffle, leather and undergrowth. On the palate, the texture is silky and the tannins are of great finesse, offering a persistent finish. This style, at once structured and voluptuous, makes it an immediately recognisable wine among the great Bordeaux.

Food and wine pairings with Château Cheval Blanc deserve particular attention, given the wine's great complexity. In its early years, it will sublimate a herb-crusted saddle of lamb, a beef tenderloin in cep sauce, or a roasted pigeon with truffles. With age, its aromatic palette becomes richer and calls for more delicate pairings: truffled poultry, duck à l'orange, or aged pressed-curd cheeses such as an old Comté. The richness of the Cabernet Franc also pairs very well with spiced dishes featuring soft, floral notes.

Some vintages of Château Cheval Blanc have entered the legend of world viticulture. The 1947 is universally hailed as one of the most extraordinary wines ever produced. More recently, the years 2000, 2010, 2015 and 2016 are considered absolute references, combining concentration, freshness and exceptional longevity. For enthusiasts wishing to discover the estate, the 2014 and 2017 vintages offer an excellent quality-to-price ratio while remaining true to the property's signature style.

Le Petit Cheval is the second wine of Château Cheval Blanc, crafted from younger plots and blends not selected for the grand vin. It shares the same DNA and the same winemaking standards as its elder, but expresses itself with greater suppleness and earlier accessibility. It is an excellent entry point for discovering the estate's style, with genuine aromatic complexity at a more approachable scale. It proves ideal to enjoy between 5 and 12 years after bottling.

The ideal tasting window for a Château Cheval Blanc depends closely on the vintage and your personal preferences. In its early years, the wine can appear somewhat closed, with its tannins still seeking integration. As a general rule, it is advisable to wait at least 8 to 10 years after the harvest for more accessible vintages, and 15 to 20 years for great years such as 2000 or 2010. Enthusiasts wishing to enjoy a young bottle should decant it at least two hours in advance, to allow the wine to open up and reveal the full richness of its aromatic bouquet.

History of Château Cheval Blanc

The history of Château Cheval Blanc truly begins in 1832 when Jean-Jacques Ducasse acquired part of the estate of the famous Château Figeac, located on the border of Pomerol and Saint-Émilion. This was a decisive turning point for the estate, which would go on to become an emblem of Bordeaux viticulture. Under the direction of Jean Laussac-Fourcaud, who married Henriette Ducasse in 1852, the estate took shape and adopted an unprecedented blend: 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Franc, a bold choice for the time. This singularity helped forge the unique identity of Cheval Blanc.

During the second half of the 19th century, Château Cheval Blanc experienced a meteoric rise. In 1862, the estate won its first medal at the Universal Exhibition in London, before triumphing in Paris and Antwerp. These distinctions helped establish the estate's international reputation. Over the decades, Cheval Blanc continued to shine among the greatest Bordeaux crus, alongside prestigious estates such as Margaux and Lafite

The modernization of the estate continued in the 20th century with the construction of new cellars and the adoption of innovative drainage techniques. In 1998, Château Cheval Blanc was acquired by Bernard Arnault and Baron Albert Frère, who entrusted its management to Pierre Lurton, an iconic figure also in charge of Château d'Yquem. Under their impetus, Cheval Blanc has remained faithful to its heritage while resolutely looking to the future.

In 2021, Château Cheval Blanc made the bold decision to withdraw from the prestigious Premier Grand Cru Classé "A" classification of Saint-Émilion, asserting its desire to focus on the authenticity of its terroir and the quality of its wines, rather than meeting established evaluation criteria.

Château Cheval Blanc achieves 100/100 by Robert Parker for its vintages 2009, 1998, 2010, 2005, 2015, 2016 and 2019, testifying to its consistent excellence. The years 1982, 1948 and 2000 follow with 99/100, and the vintages 2018, 1990, 1950 and 1921 receive 98/100.

Terroirs and Vines of Château Cheval Blanc

The terroir of Château Cheval Blanc is one of the most fascinating in Saint-Émilion, characterized by a mosaic of soils that contributes to the complexity and richness of its wines. Located on the quaternary alluvial deposits of the Isle, on the border with Pomerol, the estate benefits from a unique geological diversity. Three main soil types coexist across the 42 hectares of vineyards: clay, gravel, and sand. This balanced distribution gives the wines of Cheval Blanc their distinctive organoleptic characteristics.

Cabernet Franc, the estate's flagship grape variety, makes up 55% of the plantings, complemented by 40% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Each plot of the vineyard has its own specificities, linked to the nature of the soil, its age, and the grape variety cultivated there. Clay soils produce velvety and powerful tannins, while gravel brings finer aromas and great elegance. This unique marriage of soils and grape varieties allows Cheval Blanc to produce powerful yet always well-balanced wines of rare aromatic complexity.

Another fundamental aspect of the estate is its commitment to sustainable viticulture. No herbicides have ever been used in the vineyard. In 2021, Château Cheval Blanc took a further step by publishing a manifesto in favour of agroforestry, advocating for polyculture and the return of biodiversity to the estate's land. The cessation of ploughing and the cultivation of living soils are now at the heart of Cheval Blanc's ecological approach.

Winemaking at Château Cheval Blanc

Winemaking at Château Cheval Blanc is a meticulous process that reflects a constant pursuit of perfection. Each plot is vinified separately in temperature-controlled cement vats, allowing the full potential of each terroir to be expressed. This particular care given to winemaking preserves the singularity of each grape variety and guarantees exceptional complexity in the final blends.

The estate has 67 vats of different sizes, designed to adapt to the particularities of each plot. This plot-by-plot approach is essential to maintaining the exceptional quality of the wines. After fermentation, which takes place in a traditional manner, the wine is aged for between 16 and 18 months in 100% new French oak barrels. This extended time in barrels gives the wines of Cheval Blanc a harmonious structure and silky tannins, while encouraging the evolution of aromas.

Furthermore, in recent years the estate has undertaken a series of innovations aimed at further improving the quality of its wines. The addition of Cabernet Sauvignon to the blend, though modest (5%), adds a new dimension to the assemblages, bringing freshness and structure. Malolactic fermentation takes place directly in vats to preserve the purity of the fruit and guarantee wines of great finesse.

The Cuvées of Château Cheval Blanc

Château Cheval Blanc is celebrated for producing exceptional wines, recognized for their finesse, aromatic complexity and longevity. The estate offers several cuvées, each expressing the unique characteristics of its terroir.

Château Cheval Blanc

The estate's flagship cuvée, a wine of unmatched elegance and power. This former Premier Grand Cru Classé "A" is crafted from the estate's finest plots and benefits from extended aging in barrels. The wines of Cheval Blanc are renowned for their ability to age for several decades while retaining their freshness and brilliance.

Le Petit Cheval

The estate's second wine, Le Petit Cheval is made from young vines and selected plots. It offers a more accessible expression while retaining the refined hallmark of its elder sibling. This wine is ideal for those wishing to discover the world of Cheval Blanc while enjoying a wine that is ready to drink.

Le Petit Cheval - Le Blanc

Since 2016, Château Cheval Blanc has also produced an exceptional white wine, the Petit Cheval Blanc. Made from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, this rare wine combines freshness, minerality and aromatic complexity, testifying to the estate's expertise in producing high-quality white wines.

Saint-Émilion, a jewel of the Bordeaux wine region, has produced over the years vintages of exceptional quality, delighting lovers of great wines. Among the legendary vintages, one can cite 1947, 1959, and 1961, true icons that have marked the history of Bordeaux wines. The famous 1982 remains an undisputed reference. The following decades were no less remarkable, with outstanding vintages such as 1990, 1995, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2003, and 2005, all acclaimed for their richness and aging potential. More recently, the vintages 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, and 2020 have shone for their balance and depth, reaffirming Saint-Émilion's reputation as one of Bordeaux's most sought-after appellations, where each new year continues to captivate lovers of great wines with its consistent quality and elegance.

Discover the prestigious Premiers Grands Crus Classés A of Saint-Émilion, true jewels of the right bank vineyard. Among them, Château Pavie, promoted in 2012, continues to shine for the exceptional quality of its wines. More recently, in 2022, Château Figeac joined this exclusive circle, confirming its place among the elite. Other estates, although no longer part of this classification since 2022, continue to draw the admiration of enthusiasts: Château Angélus, Château Ausone and Château Cheval Blanc, all synonymous with tradition and excellence.

Château Cheval Blanc is far more than a simple wine estate. It is a living legend, a historical heritage and a key player in the evolution of Bordeaux viticulture. Thanks to its unique terroir, atypical grape variety selection and avant-garde winemaking methods, the estate continues to produce exceptional wines that captivate enthusiasts the world over. Whether through its grand crus or its more accessible cuvées, every wine from Cheval Blanc offers an incomparable sensory experience, synonymous with excellence and elegance.
