1981 Vintage

The vintage preceding the mythical 1982, the harvest at Bordeaux was heavily rained upon at the beginning of October, diluting many wines that could have proved excellent… As a result, chaptalization was necessary to restore the alcohol levels that the water had caused to drop. Nevertheless, several Bordeaux châteaux in Pauillac, Margaux, Saint Julien and Pomerol produced fine 1981 wines. In white Bordeaux, the wines have passed their peak, and in Sauternes, they can sometimes appear a little thin. Burgundy 1981 experienced severe frosts in April and hail at the end of July, resulting in a significantly reduced harvest, yielding red Burgundies with limited ageing potential and less expressiveness, and rather weak white Burgundies. In Champagne, with frost having caused widespread damage, only a few well-regarded and well-stocked houses such as Champagne Bollinger, Champagne Krug and Champagne Salon released vintage bottles described as exceptional and extremely rare. No notable successes for the wines of the Rhône Valley or the wines of the Loire, but a few age-worthy Rieslings from Alsace wines.
