Vintage 1981

The vintage preceding the mythical 1982, the harvest in Bordeaux was heavily rained upon in early October, diluting many wines that could have proved excellent… As a result, chaptalization was necessary to restore the alcohol levels that the water had reduced. Nevertheless, several Bordeaux châteaux in Pauillac, Margaux, Saint Julien and Pomerol produced good 1981 wines. In white Bordeaux, the wines are past their prime, and in Sauternes, they can sometimes appear a little thin. Burgundy 1981 experienced severe frosts in April and hail in late July, resulting in a significantly reduced harvest, producing red Burgundies with limited aging potential and less expressiveness, and rather weak white Burgundies. In Champagne, with frost having caused widespread damage, only a few well-regarded and well-stocked houses such as Bollinger Champagne, Krug Champagne and Salon Champagne released vintage bottles described as exceptional and extremely rare. No notable successes for the wines of the Rhône Valley or the Loire wines, but a few age-worthy Rieslings for the Alsace wines.
