Vintage 2004

The 2004 vintage in Bordeaux is marked by coolness and humidity (grey and rainy weather in August), fortunately saved by a beautiful September. Red Bordeaux wines from 2004 are therefore classic and of good quality without being considered "Great Bordeaux wines." The best red wines from the classified growths of Médoc and Saint Emilion 2004 present a fleshy body, silky tannins, and a certain concentration. In Burgundy 2004, the vintage suffered from the same weather conditions, and white wine bottles from 2004 will be better than red wine bottles from 2004.

Our advice for buying a 2004 wine

Vegetal notes are sometimes present in red Burgundy, and the wines will not be suitable for ageing. White Burgundies are successful, in a floral, fresh and balanced style. In Champagne, 2004 is a good and abundant vintage. Chardonnay appears to have yielded the best results that year. Rhône wines from 2004 are balanced and lighter. Cornas 2004 and Hermitage 2004 will age well, while Côte-Rôtie 2004 appears less dense. In white Rhône wine, the Hermitage and Crozes-Hermitage sector stands above the rest. In the Southern Rhône Valley, Châteauneuf du Pape 2004 produces good bottles (more classic than the 2003 vintage but age-worthy). A good 2004 vintage in Alsace, however marred by October rains for the sweet wines produced in smaller quantities. The Loire Valley was affected by a very wet summer in 2004, which considerably limited successes, found mainly in Chinon and Saumur Champigny for the 2004 reds. The 2004 sweet white wines from the Loire are weaker.

While the 2004 vintage is now ready to drink, it is better to look towards the 2004 Premiers Crus Classés and Seconds Crus Classés (Margaux appellation for example) or the 1ers Grands Crus Classés of Saint-Émilion, which have taken the greatest care in the production of their wines. The 2004 dry white wines and 2004 sweet wines from Bordeaux are good wines, but well below the 2001 and 2003. In Bordeaux, as the 2004 vintage sits between two expensive vintages (2003 and 2005), good deals are possible if you focus on the best Crus Classés of 2004: Cos d'Estournel 2004, Montrose 2004, Lafite Rothschild 2004, Latour 2004, Ducru Beaucaillou 2004. A fine cluster of wines from the Margaux appellation in 2004: Giscours 2004, Lascombes 2004, Château Margaux 2004, Palmer 2004. In Pessac-Léognan: Domaine de Chevalier 2004, Haut Bailly 2004, Haut Brion 2004 and Pape Clément 2004 (white). In Pomerol and St-Émilion: Eglise Clinet 2004, Lafleur 2004, Pétrus 2004, Le Pin 2004, Angélus 2004, Ausone 2004, Pavie 2004, Pavie Macquin 2004. In Sauternes, Fargues 2004 and Climens 2004 are successful. In Burgundy, a red Corton 2004 from Comte Armand, or in white wine a magnificent Puligny Montrachet 1er cru Perrières (or Folatières) 2004 from Sauzet. In Champagne, a Taittinger Comte de Champagne 2004. In the Rhône Valley, a Cornas 2004 from Auguste Clape, a Côte Rôtie 2004 from Jamet, a Châteauneuf du Pape Beaucastel 2004. In white Rhône, an Hermitage 2004 from Jean Louis Chave.
