A reference in Châteauneuf-du-Pape: Clos du Mont Olivet
Clos du Mont Olivet is a historic and renowned family estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the southern part of the Rhône Valley, which has remained in the Sabon family since the early 20th century. In the 1950s, the wines of Clos Mont Olivet developed significantly in France and England. After various divisions of the estate among the Sabon sons, Joseph Sabon's three sons: Bernard, Jean Claude, and Pierre expanded the Domaine du Clos du Mont Olivet from 1978.
Since 2002, the new generation consisting of Thierry, Céline and David has continued to manage this great 50-hectare estate located in the heart of Chateauneuf du Pape. David and Thierry are present in the vineyards and in the cellar, and Céline is in charge of management and commercial relations. As the Clos Mont Olivet vineyard is highly fragmented, the style of Clos du Mont Olivet wines remains traditional, and the wines can sometimes appear reserved, even closed in their youth. Time working its magic, beneficial aging of 10 to 15 years brings them finesse and brilliance, as well as revealing their full potential for subtlety and refinement. The extensive range of wines from the Clos Mont Olivet estate consists of a French wine called "la Sabonite" (Grenache), 3 IGP du Gard, "La Quête": a pure Cinsault, "Confluences": a blend of Carignan and Grenache; since 2016, "Rive Droite": a red wine composed of Grenache, Carignan, Syrah, Merlot and Mourvèdre, 2 wines in AOC Côtes du Rhône, including the white with its delicate floral nuances, and finally 4 Chateauneuf du Pape cuvées including a spirited and generous white, yet superbly distinguished. On the red CDP side, the red Chateauneuf is of excellent quality, the cuvée being produced from parcels yielding fine and fruity wines thus accessible at a younger age, and finally the famous Cuvée du Papet du Clos Mont Olivet composed of very old Grenache vines (dating from 1901) + Mourvèdre and Syrah, and produced only in the most favorable years. The Cuvée du Papet is very rich, thus the juice has more sap and more body to balance its power. Finally, Clos du Mont Olivet offers 3 Lirac cuvées that complete the range: 1 red Lirac and 1 rosé Lirac + the famous Marie Jausset cuvée (in tribute to the grandmother), very concentrated, which is intended for the Lirac AOC as the counterpart of the Cuvée du Papet in Chateauneuf du Pape. The best vintages for the Châteauneuf du Pape appellation are the following: 1985, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1995, 1998, 2000, 2005, 2011, 2015 and 2017. All the wines display great aging potential, and it is strongly recommended for Chateauneuf du Pape wines to let them age for approximately 10 years.
