History of Champagne Georges Remy

The history of the estate is rooted in Bouzy, at the heart of the Montagne de Reims, where the Remy family has cultivated the vine for several generations. Following the experience of his grandfather in the post-war period, it is Georges Remy, representing the third generation, who breathes new life into the family heritage with a vision that is both artisanal and resolutely contemporary. Trained in Avize and enriched by experience in the Bordeaux vineyards, he took over the reins of the estate in the early 2010s and immediately undertook soil work, with plowing beginning in 2012, before launching the conversion to organic farming.

His first bottles came to light with a red Coteaux Champenois from Bouzy, followed by the first champagnes signed Georges Remy, disgorged from the 2014 harvest onwards. Advised in his early days by Benoît Lahaye, a key figure in organic viticulture in Bouzy, Georges Remy quickly established himself as one of the most brilliant winemakers of the new Champenois generation. His production, long limited to a few thousand bottles, remains deliberately confidential in order to prioritize quality and the expression of terroir.

Terroirs and Vines of Champagne Georges Remy

The vineyard extends over approximately 5 hectares spread across 17 plots in four prestigious communes of the Montagne de Reims: Bouzy and Ambonnay, classified Grand Cru, as well as Tauxières and Louvois, classified Premier Cru. The soils, composed of dark clays, millstone and silica resting on chalk, provide the wines with depth and character. In Tauxières, the clay layer thins and the chalk surfaces more prominently, bringing tension and minerality to the grapes that ripen there.

The grape varieties give pride of place to Pinot Noir, king of Bouzy, which occupies more than 4 hectares, complemented by approximately 1 hectare of Chardonnay. Certified organic since the 2018 harvest, the vines are tended with meticulous care: plowing by tractor or horse on the finest plots of Bouzy, controlled ground cover, pruning predominantly in Cordon de Royat and replacement of only the missing vines through mass selection or low-yielding plants. Certain historic vines, such as those of Les Hauts Clos planted in 1960 by Georges's grandfather, constitute a precious genetic heritage that is jealously preserved.

Vinifications of Champagne Georges Remy

The philosophy of the estate rests on harvests carried out at perfect ripeness, often pushed to the maximum, in order to obtain concentrated grapes that allow vinification without chaptalization. Each plot is vinified separately, through spontaneous fermentation, then aged in oak barrels on fine lees: around ten months for the champagnes, fifteen to twenty months for the Coteaux Champenois. Malolactic fermentation is carried out and bottlings follow the lunar calendar.

Dosages are kept to a minimum, with most cuvées offered as brut nature or extra brut, and certain single-vineyard wines benefit from a cork-sealed disgorgement that further refines the texture of the wines. After long aging in the cellar, the Georges Remy champagnes combine expressiveness, vinosity, chalky freshness and great aging potential.

The cuvées of Champagne Georges Remy

Les Quatre Terroirs: the estate's signature cuvée, this Pinot Noir-dominant blend complemented by Chardonnay brings together grapes from the four villages of the estate (Bouzy, Ambonnay, Louvois and Tauxières). Offered as extra brut or brut nature depending on the disgorgement, it delivers a generous nose of red fruits and spices, a textured and elegant palate carried by a chalky backbone. A perfect introduction to the Georges Remy style.

Blanc de Noirs Grand Cru: drawn from various Pinot Noir plots in Bouzy, including Les Vaudayants, this brut nature reveals aromas of dried fruits, cereals and delicate oakiness. The palate is vinous, structured and powerful while retaining elegance and freshness. A pure reflection of the great Pinot Noirs of Bouzy.

Les Hauts Clos: a Grand Cru single-vineyard plot from Bouzy in 100% Pinot Noir, crafted from vines planted in 1960 by Georges Remy's grandfather. This blanc de noirs brut nature, disgorged under cork, expresses noble vegetal notes, angelica and red fruits on a deep and refined palate. A historically charged cuvée built for aging.

Le Mont de Tauxières: a Grand Cru single-vineyard plot located on Bouzy, blending equal parts Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Vinified as brut nature and aged under cork, this powerful and vinous champagne evokes yellow fruits and citrus, with an ample body and remarkable length. A gastronomic wine that improves with age.

Les Muits: a blanc de blancs Premier Cru from a Chardonnay plot in Tauxières. This brut nature of great freshness bursts with grapefruit and orange, with a lively and vibrant palate, a slightly vinous finish and a discreet oakiness that adds a saline touch. The chiseled expression of Chardonnay on chalk.

Les Vaudayants Rosé: a confidential Grand Cru rosé crafted from the Les Vaudayants plot in Bouzy, the same plot that gives birth to the estate's Bouzy rouge. A brut nature with a delicate color, it marries crunchy red fruits, silky texture and a chalky finish of beautiful persistence.

Coteaux Champenois Bouzy Rouge Les Vaudayants: a still red wine from Pinot Noir, aged fifteen to twenty months in barrels on fine lees. Delicate and expressive, it recalls the great Pinot Noirs of the Côte through its fine tannins and vibrant fruitiness. A rarity that has built the reputation of the estate since its early days.
