Nicolas Joly - Coulee de Serrant

Clos de la Coulée de Serrant: a mythical monopole held by Nicolas Joly

Wines from the Coulée de Serrant estate: buy at the best price

The historic vineyard of Clos de la Coulée de Serrant, an iconic landmark of the Val de Loire and Savennières, was planted in 1130 by Cistercian monks. Nicolas Joly holds it as a monopole, and its surface area is 7 ha. Effectively supported by his daughter Virginie, the Coulée de Serrant estate committed as early as 1984 to a more natural approach, and the entire vineyard is farmed according to the principles of biodynamics. The Chenin vines planted here are between 40 and 80 years old, and are located along the Loire on slopes with a south/south-east exposure, with sometimes spectacular gradients.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Nicolas Joly – Coulée de Serrant estate holds a unique place in the French wine landscape. The Coulée de Serrant is itself a controlled appellation of only 7 hectares, whose vines were planted in 1130 by Cistercian monks. This family monopoly, perched on steep slopes overlooking the Loire, produces exclusively chenin blanc on red schist soils. Its rarity, age, and singular terroir make it an exceptional Loire white wine, celebrated for centuries by the greatest connoisseurs.

The Nicolas Joly estate covers a total of 15 hectares and produces only white wines from the chenin grape variety. Three cuvées are crafted there in small quantities: the Coulée de Serrant (AOC Savennières Coulée de Serrant), the Clos de la Bergerie (AOC Savennières Roche-aux-Moines) and Les Vieux Clos (AOC Savennières). Each expresses a different facet of this exceptional terroir, with an aromatic complexity ranging from candied citrus fruits to mineral notes of schist, passing through honey and beeswax.

The wines from the Nicolas Joly – Coulée de Serrant estate are among the dry whites most capable of ageing in France. Their cellaring potential is remarkable: from 10 to over 30 years depending on the vintage, with an evolution towards truffle, smoky and honeyed notes. In the cellar, the wines gradually gain in depth and complexity, moving away from their youthful aromas to reveal the full mineral power of the schist terroir. Patience and aeration are the two key words to fully appreciate them.

Nicolas Joly was one of the first winemakers to introduce and champion biodynamic farming in France as early as the 1980s. Since 1984, the entire estate has been cultivated according to biodynamic agriculture methods. This approach, inspired by the work of Rudolf Steiner, excludes all chemical fertilisers, pesticides, and synthetic herbicides. It aims to keep the soils alive and to allow the terroir to express itself without constraint, making Nicolas Joly a world reference in natural viticulture.

The vineyard is managed in a deliberately artisanal and respectful manner. The chenin vines, aged between 40 and 80 years, are located on the banks of the Loire on hillsides with south/south-east exposure and sometimes spectacular slopes. The vineyard is cultivated partly by hand and by horse, with an average yield of only 20 to 25 hectolitres per hectare. The harvest is carried out in several successive passes to achieve optimal ripeness of the grapes, including a proportion of botrytised grapes which gives the wines their characteristic complexity.

The richness and mineral tension of the wines from the Nicolas Joly – Coulée de Serrant estate call for dishes of a certain generosity. This complex wine pairs perfectly with dishes rich in texture and flavour: roasted poultry, mushroom risottos, river fish in sauce, truffle-based dishes or characterful cheeses. With more mature vintages, which develop notes of wax and spices, pairings with foie gras preparations or pan-seared scallops reveal a particularly elegant harmony.

The soil is made up of very thin red schist, measuring between 20 and 40 cm for the monopole vineyard of Coulée de Serrant, and slightly thicker (40 to 80 cm) for the Clos de la Bergerie cuvée by Nicolas Joly. The yields practiced at the Coulée de Serrant estate are very low, ranging from 20 to 25 hL/ha for the Coulée de Serrant (instead of the authorized 40 hL), and from 25 to 30 hL instead of the authorized 50 hL for the Clos de la Bergerie. As for the Vieux Clos, the 3rd cuvée of the Nicolas Joly estate, yields are only 30 to 35 hL/ha, despite the fact that the vines here are younger and therefore more productive. In total, the Coulée de Serrant estate produces only 45,000 to 50,000 bottles per year, ensuring consistently exceptional quality, and the vineyard, which overlooks the Loire with a south/south-east exposure, is cultivated partly by hand and by horse. Across the 3 cuvées produced — La Coulée de Serrant, Les Vieux Clos and Le Clos de la Bergerie — the practices are the same, and the harvests are carried out through successive passes (4 to 5 passes spread over 3 to 5 weeks) in order to ensure optimal ripeness of the grapes (when they are golden). Nicolas Joly himself has said: "By harvesting a grape too early, you obtain a freshness with fruit aromas that are easy to achieve and, in my opinion, not very symptomatic of an AOC. By harvesting when the fruit is truly ripe, you reach the complexity of an AOC." This approach gives the wines of Coulée de Serrant their special character, and their singularly aromatic bouquet of candied citrus, flowers and minerality. Some may describe them as wines for the initiated, but these wines leave no one indifferent. Taste them, do not hesitate to decant them, and even to keep your opened bottles for several days — you will find that their ability to remain open to the air without oxidizing is truly exceptional. Older bottles are recommended for the great vintages and will allow you to form your own opinion: does Coulée de Serrant deserve a place among the 5 greatest white wines in the world (alongside Yquem, Montrachet, Chateau Grillet and Chateau Chalon), as Curnonsky had suggested in the 1930s?
