Bruno Clavelier took over in 1987, succeeding his grandfather. Domaine Clavelier is certified organic by Ecocert and has used biodynamic practices in its approach to viticulture since 1996.

History of Domaine Bruno Clavelier

The family has been rooted in Vosne-Romanée for more than two centuries, but for a very long time its production was sold by the barrel to négociants, notably Maison Clavelier, run by the paternal branch of the family and sold in 1991. In the late 1980s, Bruno Clavelier, a fifth-generation winegrower and talented rugby player, decided to turn the page. He left competitive rugby, took over the vines of his maternal grandfather Joseph Brosson, expanded the buildings and cellars, and began bottling his own wines in 1987.

He inherited a quiet treasure: parcels that his parents and grandparents, pioneers ahead of their time, had never treated with synthetic products or fertilized with potash, even in the 1970s and 1980s when chemicals were used throughout the Côte. Building on this exceptional foundation, Bruno Clavelier naturally steered the estate toward Ecocert organic certification, then certified biodynamics from 2005. Joined by his wife Valérie in 2003, he gradually expanded the property to six and a half hectares through targeted acquisitions in Vosne-Romanée, Chambolle-Musigny, Gevrey-Chambertin, Nuits-Saint-Georges and on the Corton hill. Reserved, generous with his knowledge and deeply humble, he prefers to let his wines speak for themselves and has become a leading figure in Burgundy’s biodynamic viticulture.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Bruno Clavelier

Bruno Clavelier is a passionate student of the geology of his parcels, and therein lies the distinctiveness of his range. Each lieu-dit produces a separate cuvée, never blended with another, to express the character of complex soils combining clay, marl, hard limestone and, above all, chert and flint. These siliceous deposits, particularly abundant in certain Vosne-Romanée climats, give the wines their characteristic struck-flint aromas. The winegrower sums up his style in a telling phrase: he makes mineral, precise red wines with the texture of whites.

The vineyard has a very high proportion of old vines, many planted in the 1930s and 1940s, accounting for naturally low yields and good concentration. The vines are pruned using single Guyot or cordon de Royat according to their vigor. Canopy work, from bud removal to tying up shoots, is meticulous, and some parcels are plowed by horse with the help of specialized contractors. Biodynamic preparations are applied as soon as disease pressure appears, with the aim of supporting the vine rather than treating it. Every parcel is harvested by hand.

Winemaking at Domaine Bruno Clavelier

There is no fixed rule in the cellar other than to intervene as little as possible. The grapes are sorted first by the pickers, then on a sorting table. Most are destemmed, but depending on the vintage and cru, between five and thirty percent of whole clusters are retained to bring freshness and complexity. Vinification takes place in open, tapered oak vats suited to each cuvée, with the harvest cooled to allow fermentation to begin smoothly.

Fermentations rely exclusively on native yeasts, with a few manual punch-downs and very gentle pump-overs. Bruno Clavelier describes the process as infusion rather than maceration, and the crus spend around three weeks in vat. The grapes are pressed gently in a pneumatic press, and the wine is transferred to barrels by gravity. Aging lasts sixteen to eighteen months in Allier and Tronçais oak barrels, with a deliberately restrained proportion of new oak: fifteen to twenty percent for the village wines and around a quarter to a third for the premiers and grands crus. Malolactic fermentation finishes naturally the following spring. The wines are neither fined nor filtered, and bottling takes place under inert gas to keep sulfur doses to an absolute minimum.

The Cuvées of Domaine Bruno Clavelier

Vosne-Romanée Les Hauts-de-Beaux-Monts: a thirty-six-are parcel planted in 1988, above the premiers crus Aux Brûlées, La Combe Brûlée and La Montagne, at an altitude of 320 to 340 meters. The rocky soil, only a few centimeters deep, and southern exposure produce a lively, taut wine with remarkable mineral tension.

Vosne-Romanée La Combe Brûlée: fifty-two ares of vines more than eighty years old, tucked into a small enclosed hollow. The microclimate combines the coolness of the hollow’s floor with heat released by the stones on its slopes, slowing ripening. Limestone soil with chert gives this complex cuvée its smoky notes and signature struck-flint character.

Vosne-Romanée La Montagne: from the heights above the village, this cuvée stands out for its directness and floral elegance. Delicate red fruit, faded rose and chalky minerality create an airy wine with exceptionally fine tannins that gains much from five to eight years in the cellar.

Vosne-Romanée Hautes-Maizières: made from old vines, this cuvée has pronounced floral aromas of dried flowers, with subtle fruit and a very elegant hint of spice. The palate is dense without heaviness, and the estate’s characteristic saline structure is especially evident.

Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux-Monts: one of the estate’s great classics, from high on the slope at the edge of Echezeaux. An appealing nose of red fruit, sweet spice and a wisp of smoke; a palate of sustained density; and, above all, remarkably refined tannins without a trace of roughness. A complete premier cru built for ten to fifteen years of aging.

Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées: a prestigious climat neighboring Richebourg, it yields a warmer, fleshier wine with black cherry, licorice and warm spices. The palate is full and enveloping, supported by a deep mineral structure and a beautifully persistent finish.

Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Noirots: this climat above the village yields the range’s most delicate expression, true to Chambolle’s reputation for finesse. Rose, violet and wild strawberry dominate, with a silky texture, supple tannins and an elegantly airy finish.

Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru La Combe d’Orveau: a historic parcel of old vines that, before phylloxera, was classified as Musigny. It combines Chambolle’s finesse with uncommon depth, showing aromas of dark fruit, forest floor and flint, a dense palate and a length that betrays its terroir’s origins.

Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Cras: from old vines on very stony soil, this premier cru embodies the appellation’s quiet strength. Structured, deep and serious, it reveals dark fruit, pepper and a firm mineral backbone. Superb with braised beef cheeks, duck breast with mushrooms or aged Époisses.

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Corbeaux: a renowned climat north of the village, neighboring Mazis-Chambertin. It yields a dense, firmly built wine with aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and spice, and powerful yet beautifully integrated tannins. The most robust wine in the range, it should be aged for at least eight years.

Corton Le Rognet Grand Cru: the estate’s only grand cru, situated on the eastern side of the Corton hill near Ladoix, on stony, well-drained soils. It combines Corton’s expected power with the mineral precision of Clavelier’s style, offering deep red and dark fruit, notes of iron and spice, fine tannins and a long, earthy finish. A grand cru with exceptional aging potential, to save for the finest occasions.
