One of the main assets of Domaine Bruno Clavelier is a heritage of old vines, replanted mostly after the phylloxera crisis in the 1930s and 1940s. Bruno Clavelier took over in 1987, succeeding his grandfather. Domaine Clavelier is certified in Organic Farming by Ecocert and has practiced biodynamics since 1996, in its approach to vine cultivation.

History of Domaine Bruno Clavelier

The family has been rooted in Vosne-Romanée for more than two centuries, but for a very long time production was sold in barrel to négociants, notably to the Clavelier house, run by the paternal branch and sold in 1991. Bruno Clavelier, fifth-generation winegrower and talented rugby player, decided at the end of the 1980s to turn the page. He abandoned high-level sport, took over the vines of his maternal grandfather Joseph Brosson, expanded the buildings and cellars, and began estate-bottling his wines from 1987 onwards.

He inherits a discreet treasure: plots that his parents and grandparents, pioneers ahead of their time, never treated with synthetic products or fertilised with potash, even during the 1970s and 1980s when chemistry prevailed throughout the Côte. On this exceptional foundation, Bruno Clavelier naturally steered the estate towards organic certification by Ecocert, then towards certified biodynamics from 2005. Joined by his wife Valérie in 2003, he gradually expanded the property to six and a half hectares through targeted acquisitions in Vosne-Romanée, Chambolle-Musigny, Gevrey-Chambertin, Nuits-Saint-Georges, and on the Corton hill. Discreet, pedagogical, and deeply humble, he prefers to let his wines speak for themselves and has established himself as a reference in biodynamic viticulture in Burgundy.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Bruno Clavelier

Bruno Clavelier is a passionate student of the geology of his plots, and it is there that the entire singularity of his range resides. Each lieu-dit yields a distinct cuvée, never blended, in order to express the personality of complex soils combining clays, marls, hard limestones, and above all chaille flints and silex. These siliceous fossils, particularly present in certain Vosne-Romanée climats, lend the wines their characteristic aromas of gunflint. The winegrower himself sums up his style in a telling phrase: he crafts red wines with the texture of a white — mineral and precise.

The vineyard has a very high proportion of old vines, many of which were planted in the 1930s and 1940s, which explains the naturally low yields and fine concentration. The vines are pruned in single Guyot or Royat cordon depending on their vigour, green work is carried out carefully from budding to training, and certain plots are ploughed by horse using specialist contractors. Biodynamic preparations are applied as soon as disease pressure is felt, in a logic of accompanying the plant rather than treating it. All plots are harvested by hand.

Vinification at Domaine Bruno Clavelier

There is no fixed rule in the cellar, other than to intervene as little as possible. Sorting is carried out first by the pickers, then on a sorting table. The grapes are mostly destemmed, but a proportion of whole clusters, ranging between five and thirty percent depending on the vintage and the cru, is retained to add freshness and complexity. Vinification takes place in open truncated conical oak vats, adapted to each cuvée, with cooling of the harvest to ensure a calm start to fermentation.

Fermentations are conducted solely by indigenous yeasts, accompanied by a few manual pigeages and very gentle pump-overs. Bruno Clavelier speaks more of infusion than maceration, and vatting lasts around three weeks for the crus. Pressing is gentle, using a pneumatic press, and the wine is moved to barrels by gravity. Ageing lasts sixteen to eighteen months in Allier and Tronçais barrels, with a deliberately measured proportion of new oak — fifteen to twenty percent for the village wines and around a quarter to a third for the premiers and grands crus. Malolactic fermentation completes naturally the following spring. The wines are neither fined nor filtered, and bottling takes place under inert gas in order to reduce sulphur additions to the strict minimum.

The Cuvées of Domaine Bruno Clavelier

Vosne-Romanée Les Hauts-de-Beaux-Monts: a thirty-six-are plot planted in 1988, situated above the premier crus Aux Brûlées, La Combe Brûlée, and La Montagne, between 320 and 340 metres in altitude. The rocky soil, just a few centimetres deep, and the south-facing aspect yield a lively, taut wine of remarkable mineral tension.

Vosne-Romanée La Combe Brûlée: fifty-two ares of vines over eighty years old, nestled in a small enclosed combe. The microclimate blends the coolness of the valley bottom with the warmth reflected by the hillside stones, slowing ripening. The calcareous soil with chaille flints lends this complex cuvée its smoky notes and its gunflint signature.

Vosne-Romanée La Montagne: situated on the heights of the village, this cuvée stands out for its directness and floral elegance. Delicate red fruits, faded rose, and chalky minerality compose an airy whole, with tannins of great finesse, which gains considerably after five to eight years in the cellar.

Vosne-Romanée Hautes-Maizières: from old vines, this cuvée displays a marked floral aromatic profile of dried flowers, with a restrained fruit and a very elegant spiced note. The palate is dense without heaviness, and the saline texture characteristic of the estate is particularly legible here.

Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux-Monts: one of the great classics of the house, high on the slope, at the boundary with Echezeaux. A lovely nose of red fruits, gentle spices, and a light smokiness, with material of sustained density and above all tannins of remarkable quality, without the slightest roughness. A complete premier cru, built for ten to fifteen years of ageing.

Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées: a prestigious climat neighbouring Richebourg, it yields a more sunlit and fuller-bodied wine, with black cherry, liquorice, and warm spices. The palate is ample and enveloping, supported by a deep mineral framework and a finish of fine persistence.

Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Noirots: this climat situated above the village delivers the most lace-like expression in the range, true to Chambolle's reputation for finesse. Rose, violet, and wild strawberry dominate, the texture is silky and the tannins melted, with a finish of airy elegance.

Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru La Combe d'Orveau: a historic old-vine plot which, before phylloxera, was classified as Musigny. It combines the finesse of Chambolle with uncommon depth, with aromas of dark fruits, undergrowth, and silex, dense material, and a length that betrays the terroir's origins.

Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Cras: from old vines on very stony soils, this premier cru embodies the quiet strength of the appellation. Structured, deep, and serious, it unfolds dark fruits, pepper, and a firm mineral framework. Superb with braised beef cheeks, duck breast with mushrooms, or a well-aged époisses.

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Corbeaux: a reputed climat situated to the north of the village, neighbouring the Mazis-Chambertin. It yields a dense and well-structured wine, with aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, and spices, and powerful yet perfectly rounded tannins. The most virile in the range, to be waited at least eight years.

Corton Le Rognet Grand Cru: the estate's only grand cru, situated on the eastern face of the Corton hill, on the Ladoix side, on stony, well-drained soils. It combines the expected power of Corton with the mineral precision characteristic of the Clavelier style, with deep red and black fruits, notes of iron and spices, fine tannins, and a long, earthy finish. A grand cru for very long ageing, to be reserved for the finest occasions.
