Wines from Domaine Sylvie Esmonin: purchase at the best price!

Domaine Sylvie Esmonin is located in Gevrey Chambertin, in the heart of the famous Côte de Nuits in Burgundy. Trained as an engineer, Sylvie Esmonin worked for a long time alongside her father Michel Esmonin at Domaine Michel Esmonin et Fille, before taking over the property in 1998 and renaming the estate, while now fully managing the vinifications. Indeed, it is still (unfortunately) uncommon to see prestigious estates run by women, especially in Côte de Nuits. The talented Sylvie Esmonin honed her skills as an oenologist in several estates, before joining the family domain.

History of Domaine Sylvie Esmonin

The history of Domaine Sylvie Esmonin is that of a family deeply rooted in the Burgundian terroir, with origins dating back to the era of the Dukes of Burgundy, well before the region became French. Initially known as Domaine Michel Esmonin et Fille, after Sylvie's father's name, the estate took a decisive turn in the 1980s. At that time, wines were still mostly sold in bulk to négociants, a common practice in Burgundy. However, when Sylvie Esmonin, with a degree in agronomy and experience as a consulting oenologist, joined the family estate in 1985, she imposed a bold vision: to produce and bottle wines under the estate's label.

In 1998, Sylvie took full control and renamed the estate under her own name, marking the beginning of a new era. She transformed the estate's philosophy by adopting organic practices from 1990, abandoning herbicides and favoring environmentally respectful viticulture. This transition, combined with a rigorous approach to winemaking, allowed the estate to rise among the greatest names in Gevrey-Chambertin. Today, Domaine Sylvie Esmonin is synonymous with excellence, carried by a woman who embodies both tradition and modernity, making her wines treasures sought after by connoisseurs worldwide.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Sylvie Esmonin

Domaine Sylvie Esmonin extends over 7.8 hectares, mainly located in Gevrey-Chambertin, with a few parcels in neighboring appellations such as Volnay and Meursault. The clay-limestone soils, typical of the region, offer ideal conditions for Pinot Noir, the estate's flagship grape variety, and Chardonnay for its rare white cuvées. The most prestigious parcel is undoubtedly the Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru Clos Saint-Jacques, of which Sylvie owns 1.6 hectares in one piece, the second largest share of this emblematic 6.7-hectare climat, divided among only five owners.

Clos Saint-Jacques, often compared to a Grand Cru for its exceptional quality, benefits from a unique south-eastern exposure, offering an additional hour of daily sunshine. This particularity, combined with the diversity of soils (marls at the top, limestones in the center, clays at the bottom), gives the wines remarkable complexity, blending power, finesse and depth. The estate's other parcels, such as those of Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes, some planted over a century ago, provide unique concentration and minerality. The Pressonnier parcel, located below the national road, produces a more accessible Bourgogne Rouge, while the Brochon vines supply the Côte de Nuits-Villages cuvée. Finally, a small parcel of Volnay Santenots and vines in Meursault complete this exceptional vineyard, carefully cultivated according to rigorous organic practices.

Winemaking at Domaine Sylvie Esmonin

Winemaking at Domaine Sylvie Esmonin is a skillful balance between tradition and innovation, guided by respect for terroir and the quest for optimal grape ripeness. Sylvie Esmonin favors a minimalist approach, avoiding unnecessary interventions to allow the character of the grapes to fully express itself. Since the 1990s, she has gradually adopted whole-bunch vinification, a technique that varies by cuvée: up to 70% for Clos Saint-Jacques, 60% for Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes, 30% for Gevrey-Chambertin Villages, and entirely destemmed vinification for Bourgogne Rouge and Côte de Nuits-Villages.

The grapes, harvested at perfect ripeness over four to five days to ensure optimal homogeneity, are vinified in open wooden vats. Fermentation starts quickly, with moderate punching down to extract sugars from whole bunches. After about two weeks of maceration, the wines are transferred to oak barrels, including a high proportion of new wood (up to 100% for Clos Saint-Jacques) from the renowned cooper Dominique Laurent. This judicious use of oak gives the wines an elegant woody signature, which integrates harmoniously over time. The wines are then bottled without filtration or fining, preserving their authenticity and aging potential. This meticulous process produces wines that are both powerful and silky, capable of standing the test of time.

The Cuvées of Domaine Sylvie Esmonin

Domaine Sylvie Esmonin offers a range of exceptional cuvées, each reflecting a unique terroir and the winemaker's expertise.

Bourgogne Rouge Cuvée Sylvie (0.80 ha): From the Pressonnier parcel in Gevrey-Chambertin, this wine is crafted from deep clay soils. Entirely destemmed, it offers a light, fruity and lively texture, with cherry aromas and beautiful freshness. Perfect for immediate enjoyment, this Bourgogne Rouge is an excellent entry point to discover the estate.

Côte de Nuits-Villages (0.62 ha): Produced from the Les Vignois and La Croix Violette parcels in Brochon, this wine combines 50% whole bunches to reveal smoky, peppery notes and ripe tannins. Its structure marked by active limestone provides beautiful tension and soft fruitiness, ideal to accompany flavorful dishes.

Gevrey-Chambertin (4 ha): This cuvée, from vines averaging 50 years old, mainly located in the Les Crais lieu-dit, is vinified with 30% whole bunches. Rich and structured, this wine reveals aromas of cherry, white flowers and beautiful roundness, with finesse that characterizes the Gevrey-Chambertin style.

Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes (various parcels): Crafted from vines over 60 years old, including some centenarians planted in 1919 and 1920, this cuvée is aged in 50% new barrels. It offers intense concentration, toasted notes, black fruits and pronounced minerality. This wine, to be kept 6 to 10 years, reveals exceptional complexity and depth.

Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru Clos Saint-Jacques (1.60 ha): The estate's flagship, this wine comes from the emblematic Clos Saint-Jacques, vinified with up to 70% whole bunches and aged in 100% new barrels. Its varied soils (marls, limestones, clays) and unique exposure produce a wine of rare complexity, blending wild fruits, incense, coffee grounds and velvety texture. Considered a Grand Cru in quality, it offers aging potential of several decades.

Volnay Premier Cru Santenots (0.18 ha): This rare cuvée, produced since 1995, is vinified with a variable proportion of whole bunches. It embodies the elegance of the Côte de Beaune with powerful structure, red fruit notes and vibrant energy. A characterful wine, perfect for Volnay enthusiasts.

Bourgogne Blanc (0.27 ha): From the Les Malpoiriers parcel in Meursault, this Chardonnay offers low yields but great finesse. Its floral and mineral aromas make it a confidential wine, often reserved for close friends of the estate or consumed during harvest.

Bourgogne Aligoté (0.10 ha): This light and fresh white wine, produced in very small quantities, is mainly intended for personal use, particularly during harvest picnics.
