Wines from the Luc et Lise Pavelot estate: buy at the best price

The Luc et Lise Pavelot estate is one of the historic domaines of Pernand Vergelesses in Burgundy, as traces of this winegrowing family can already be found in the 17th century. Thus, from generation to generation, the Pavelot estate was built up and gradually expanded to reach 9 hectares of vineyards. Having succeeded their father Régis in the late 1990s, Luc Pavelot and his sister Lise decided, from the 2000s onwards, to convert the entire vineyard to organic farming, which they achieved in 2009. In the same way, unlike their father, their entire production is bottled and sold by the Pavelot estate.

Today, of the 9 hectares that make up the estate, 2/3 are devoted to red Burgundies (Pinot Noir) under Village, 1er Cru and Grand Cru Corton AOCs; and the remaining third to white Burgundies under Regional AOC (the Aligoté grape variety, superb as it is in fact situated within the Pernand Vergelesses AOC), and Village, 1er Crus and Grand Cru Corton Charlemagne (Chardonnay). The wines generally produced in the commune of Pernand Vergelesses receive somewhat less media attention, probably undeservedly, as a climat such as the Iles de Vergelesses enjoys an ideal south-east-facing exposure on the Vergelesses hillside; a Gallo-Roman villa was even established there some 2,000 years ago, of which the Pavelot estate preserves a few tiny vestiges. The Luc et Lise Pavelot estate produces precise wines of great finesse, and unlike other estates, perpetuates a certain tradition by retaining, for example, a parcel of aligoté (under the regional appellation) whose vines are nevertheless situated on the terroirs of the Pernand-Vergelesses AOC — whereas if the Pavelot estate were to replant with Chardonnay, the wine would sell for considerably more. Similarly, their Grand Cru Corton Rouge is situated on a parcel "en Charlemagne", but since it is planted with Pinot Noir, it cannot claim this climat on its labels (were it Chardonnay, the wine would command a higher selling price and more comfortable yields). The reasoning is therefore not dictated by economic imperatives. In white wine, the Luc et Lise Pavelot estate produces a round and ripe cuvée of Pernand Vergelesses village, and 2 Premiers Crus: the climat Sous Frétille, supple with citrus notes and enhanced by fine vanilla nuances, and the climat En Caradeux. A superb Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru rounds out the range. In red wine: an Aloxe Corton village, a Pernand Vergelesses village; and the Premiers Crus Vergelesses, Les Caradeux, Les Fichots and Ile de Vergelesses. In red Grand Cru, the Lise et Luc Pavelot estate produces a remarkable and refined Corton. All the wines are of excellent quality and deserve attention as a range of crus surrounding the mythical hill of Corton.
