Lelarge Pugeot

Champagne Lelarge-Pugeot wines: buy at the best price

Nestled in the heart of the Premier Cru village of Vrigny, on the western slopes of the Montagne de Reims, Champagne Lelarge-Pugeot has perpetuated a family winemaking tradition since 1799, now carried on by the eighth generation. Dominique Lelarge and Dominique Pugeot, accompanied by their children Clémence and Valentin, cultivate 8.7 hectares of vines using organic and biodynamic farming (Ecocert and Demeter certifications). Meunier, the estate's emblematic grape variety, reigns supreme alongside Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, expressing the full finesse of a terroir of clay, chalk and sand. With an exceptionally wide range of Champagne cuvées, as well as white, rosé and red Coteaux Champenois, Lelarge-Pugeot embodies the quintessence of grower Champagne — sincere, vibrant and deeply rooted in its terroir.

History of Champagne Lelarge-Pugeot

The adventure of Champagne Lelarge-Pugeot begins in 1799 when Pierre-Henri Lelarge, born that same year, settles in Vrigny after his marriage to Madeleine Dravigny, from a local winegrowing family. Generation after generation, the Lelarges pass down their devotion to the craft of winemaking. After the First World War, Raymond, the fifth generation, installs a press in 1922 and signs the first bottling of Champagne Lelarge in 1930. His son Marcel carries on the family work before passing the torch to Dominique, born in 1963.

Dominique Lelarge goes to study viticulture and oenology in Beaune, in Burgundy, where he meets Dominique Pugeot, his future wife. The couple takes over the estate and creates the Lelarge-Pugeot brand. From the 2000s onwards, they progressively eliminate pesticides and herbicides, grass the vineyards and adopt horse-drawn soil cultivation. The estate obtains organic farming certification in 2014, then Demeter biodynamic certification in 2017. Today, Clémence and Valentin Lelarge, seventh and eighth generations, accompany their parents in this wonderful family adventure dedicated to vibrant and authentic Champagnes.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Champagne Lelarge-Pugeot

The vineyard of Champagne Lelarge-Pugeot extends over 8.7 hectares divided into 42 parcels around the village of Vrigny, classified Premier Cru, at the western tip of the Montagne de Reims. The soils, of great diversity, blend calcareous marl, clay-silt and sandy veins, resting on the Champagne chalky bedrock. This geological mosaic lends the wines a singular aromatic richness, combining roundness, minerality and saline tension.

The grape variety composition reflects the identity of the village and the family's deep attachment to Meunier, which occupies 4.4 hectares, complemented by 2.8 hectares of Pinot Noir and 1.5 hectares of Chardonnay. Managed through certified biodynamics, the vines benefit from mechanical and sometimes equine soil cultivation, controlled grass cover, fruit trees along parcel borders and an integrated beekeeping approach. This polyculture, combined with reasoned yields, allows the vines to fully express the personality of the Vrigny terroir.

Vinification at Champagne Lelarge-Pugeot

The vinifications at Champagne Lelarge-Pugeot combine respect for the fruit with technical precision. Harvesting is done by hand, carefully sorted, then gently pressed. The juices ferment with their indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks, oak barrels or large casks depending on the cuvée, without systematic addition of sulfur. The objective is to preserve the purity of the grape and the original expression of the terroir, limiting any oenological intervention to the strict minimum.

The wines then rest on their fine lees for several months in tank before bottling for the second fermentation according to the traditional Champagne method. The aging on laths is deliberately extended, often from four to eight years, or even longer for prestige cuvées, in order to bring aromatic complexity, fine bubbles and great length on the palate. The dosages are systematically moderate (Extra Brut, Brut Nature or Non Dosé), allowing the character of the Meunier and the Vrigny terroir to express itself with complete sincerity.

The cuvées of Champagne Lelarge-Pugeot

Tradition Extra Brut: the estate's emblematic cuvée, a Meunier-dominant blend complemented by Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, aged for more than three years on the lees. A straight, saline and textured Champagne, it offers a superb portrait of the Vrigny terroir, with notes of wild honey, hazelnut and peach.

Rosé Extra Brut: 100% Pinot Noir from thirty-year-old vines, blended with a small proportion of the estate's own red Coteaux Champenois. Its delicate nose of wild strawberry, citrus and rose flowers precedes a fresh, crunchy and mineral palate, ideal as an aperitif or at the table.

Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut: pure Chardonnay from Vrigny's clay-limestone parcels, this lively and elegant Champagne unfolds notes of citrus, white flowers and a chiseled mineral backbone. Its chalky, persistent finish makes it an ideal companion for seafood.

C'est Sucré: an indulgent and original cuvée with a more generous dosage, tailored for lovers of rounder Champagnes. Soft, fruity and approachable, it pairs wonderfully with fruity desserts, fine pastries and certain aged cheeses.

Nature et Non Dosé: a Champagne with no dosage and no added sulfur, the most raw and pure expression of the estate's biodynamic approach. Taut, saline and vibrant, it is aimed at lovers seeking a sincere and radical Champagne.

Les Meuniers de Clémence: a 100% single-varietal Meunier from a unique parcel, dedicated to Clémence Lelarge. This cuvée reveals all the finesse and lesser-known depth of Meunier, with aromas of green apple, lemon and almond, and a creamy palate with chalky minerality.

Les Charmes de Vrigny: a Meunier-dominant blend aged on the lees for an extended period, a riper and more complex version of the Tradition. It unfolds a dense body, notes of brioche, yellow fruits and hazelnut, underpinned by a sharp acidity and a saline finish.

Saignée de Meunier: a saignée rosé made from Pinot Meunier, vinified by short maceration. Cherry-colored, with an intense nose of red fruits and flowers, a structured and indulgent palate, this bold Champagne celebrates the rarity of Champagne saignées.

Gueux: a single-plot cuvée from the eponymous lieu-dit, a testament to the estate's parcel diversity. It offers a chiseled, mineral and profound profile, a singular expression of a precise terroir on the Montagne de Reims.

Extra-Brut 2008: a cellar-worthy vintage from an exceptional sunny year. Extended aging on the lees, very low dosage, this ripe and complex Champagne develops aromas of candied fruits, pastry, white truffle and a palate of remarkable tension.

Quintessence 2010: a great vintage cuvée dominated by Chardonnay, complemented by Pinot Noir and Meunier. Elegant, broad and mineral, this gastronomic Champagne unfolds floral notes, white and yellow fruits, extended by a toasted finish of great length.

Blanc de Meuniers: a rare white Coteaux Champenois made from 100% Meunier vinified as a still white wine. Fresh, elegant and finely textured, it reveals the still facet of the estate's flagship grape variety and constitutes an unmissable curiosity for knowledgeable enthusiasts.

Rouge de Meuniers: a red Coteaux Champenois crafted in the pure tradition of Vrigny, vinified from old-vine Meunier. Aged in barrels for many months, it offers a silky palate, notes of dark fruits, cocoa and spices, to be served slightly chilled.

Coteaux Champenois Blanc: a still wine dominated by Chardonnay from Vrigny's clay-limestone parcels. Vinified and partially aged in oak barrels, it presents a broad, fruity and mineral palate, testifying to the non-sparkling potential of the Champagne terroir.

Coteaux Champenois Rouge: crafted from Pinot Noir and Meunier macerated in open vats, then aged eighteen months in oak barrels. Deep purple in color, with a nose of small red and black fruits, smoky and vanilla notes, and a dense, velvety palate of great complexity.

La Côte des Glaises: a single-plot Coteaux Champenois blanc from a historic lieu-dit with clay and silt soils, vinified 100% in Chardonnay. An experimental cuvée without sulfur or manipulation, rich, textured and deeply marked by its terroir of origin.

Coteaux Champenois Rosé: a rare still rosé wine crafted from the estate's dark grape varieties. Luminous in color, with a delicate nose of fresh red fruits and an airy, taut palate, it offers an unusual and refined expression of the Vrigny terroir in its rosé form.
