Vintage 1999

In Bordeaux, the 1999 harvest takes place during a rainy September (major hail storm on September 5 in Saint-Émilion). Properties that partially declassified or severely sorted their harvest obtain good results, improved by modern vinification techniques. Superb weather conditions in Burgundy 1999 for this vintage (more renowned in red, as the whites appear less complete). The sun perfectly ripened the grapes, and up to the northern Côte de Beaune (Pommard 1999, Volnay 1999), the red wines are very good. They require a little patience, but will yield excellent bottles for patient enthusiasts. In whites, owners who managed to limit yields succeeded in producing a good vintage.

Our advice for purchasing a wine from 1999

Médoc wines 1999 harvested quickly are fragrant and colored, but can sometimes lack depth and charm. The 1st Classified Growths 1999 stand out and often dominate the other wines of the 1999 vintage in Bordeaux. In white, the year is average. Severe sorting in Sauternes as harvests are disrupted by rain. 

The year 1999 is rather average to weak in Champagne. The Northern Rhône Valley produces an excellent 1999 vintage with superb successes for Côte Rôtie 1999, Cornas 1999 and Hermitage 1999 reds…Beautiful red wines in the Southern Rhône sector but in fact eclipsed by those from 1998. The 1999 vintage is inferior to 1996 and 1997 in the Loire Valley, with however some successes in the white wines of Savennières 1999. The year 1999 is less renowned than 2000 in Alsace, but can pleasantly surprise in the Rieslings Grands Crus.

If you wish to purchase a wine from 1999, we recommend Château Margaux 1999 and Château Palmer 1999 in the Margaux appellation. Latour 1999, Lafite Rothschild 1999 and Mouton Rothschild 1999 in Pauillac will also delight you. In Pessac Léognan turn to Haut Brion 1999 (in red or white), and Laville Haut Brion 1999 (white); In Pomerol L'Eglise Clinet 1999, Lafleur 1999, Pétrus 1999; In Saint Emilion: Cheval Blanc 1999 or Pavie 1999; and finally, in Sauternes: De Fargues 1999 or Rieussec 1999. In Burgundy 1999, the Grands Crus of the Côte de Nuits are for aging and constitute great bottles: Echezeaux 1999, Richebourg 1999, Clos de Tart 1999. In white Burgundy, Jean François Raveneau produced very beautiful Chablis in 1999. In the Rhône, Hermitage 1999 from Jean Louis Chave is immense and Cornas 1999 from Allemand or Auguste Clape are excellent. Finally, you will find magnificent Côte Rotie wines at Guigal.
