Wines from Egon Müller estate: buy at the best price

Considered the most prestigious estate in Germany, Egon Müller reigns from the hamlet of Scharzhof, in Wiltingen, on the vertiginous slopes of the Saar Valley, in the Moselle wine region. In the hands of the same family since 1797, this mythical estate devotes its entire vineyard to Riesling, on the legendary hillside of Scharzhofberg, one of the greatest white wine terroirs in the world. Egon Müller's wines, of crystalline purity and exceptional longevity, are among the rarest and most sought-after on the planet, available in different levels of ripeness (Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese and beyond).

History of the Egon Müller estate

The history of the estate dates back to 1797, when Jean-Jacques Koch acquired the Scharzhof farm, sold as national property by the French Republic following the secularisation of clergy lands. The property then passed from generation to generation within the Müller family, which gave it its name and renown. In 1954, Egon Müller III expanded the estate by purchasing half of Weingut Le Gallais in Wiltingen, adding the lieu-dits Kupp and Wiltinger Braune Kupp to its holdings.

Egon Müller IV, trained at the renowned Geisenheim viticultural university, took over the estate in 1991 and became its sole master upon his father's passing in 2001. Under his direction, the estate has reached heights of renown, with certain cuvées now counting among the most expensive and coveted white wines in the world. Passionate about riesling, Egon Müller has also carried his expertise beyond borders, with Château Belá in Slovakia and the Kanta Riesling in Australia.

Terroirs and Vines of the Egon Müller estate

The heart of the estate consists of approximately 8.3 hectares on the Scharzhofberg slope, located in a side valley of the Saar, just behind the Scharzhof house. Facing due south, this exceptional vineyard features extremely steep slopes, between 30 and 60% gradient, at an altitude of 180 to 280 metres, on deep soils of Devonian grey slate. Often considered a Grand Cru, it is among the rare German terroirs permitted to appear alone on the label, without mention of the village.

To these plots are added the vines of Weingut Le Gallais, approximately four hectares on the slopes of the Saar between Wiltingen and Kanzem, including the lieu-dits Kupp and Wiltinger Braune Kupp. The estate works exclusively with riesling, with vines sometimes a century old and some ungrafted, on slate slopes that give the wines a chiselled minerality, a saline tension typical of the Saar, and a formidable ageing potential.

Winemaking at the Egon Müller estate

Winemaking at Egon Müller estate rests on extreme rigour and intense manual work, dictated by the vertiginous steepness of the slopes. Harvesting is carried out through successive passes, plot by plot, with daily sorting of the grapes and collection of the ripest berries at the latest possible date, an exercise as delicate as it is demanding in order to achieve ideal ripeness.

The estate advocates an approach in which the official classification according to must weight is never the sole criterion; tasting and balance take precedence in defining the style of each cuvée. The rieslings retain a share of unfermented sugar carefully balanced by vibrant acidity and brilliant minerality, allowing them to be enjoyable in their youth while developing immense complexity after many years in the cellar.

The cuvées of Egon Müller estate

The Scharzhof Riesling is the estate's entry-level cuvée, the gateway to its world. Blended from vines in Saarburg, Oberemmel, and the lieu-dits Wiltinger Braunfels and Kupp, sometimes complemented by grapes from the Braune Kupp or even the Scharzhofberg, it offers a typical balance of sweetness, minerality, and the saline acidity of the Saar, pleasant both young and after several years.

The Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett is the most delicate expression of the great slope, of striking purity and freshness. Despite a share of residual sugar, mineral tension dominates, yielding a crystalline, elegant riesling of surprising complexity with age.

The Scharzhofberger Riesling Spätlese comes from grapes harvested at emphatic ripeness, sometimes overripe, during a harvest deliberately later than elsewhere. Denser and richer than the Kabinett, it retains remarkable finesse and a perfect balance between generous fruitiness and lively acidity.

The Scharzhofberger Riesling Auslese is made from a selection of the ripest bunches, often touched by noble rot. Concentrated, deep, and of great length, it reaches heights of complexity, and in the finest years is produced in Goldkapsel and Lange Goldkapsel versions, even rarer and more sought-after.

The Scharzhofberger Riesling Beerenauslese is an exceptional dessert wine, produced from berries selected one by one, rich in sugar and concentrated by botrytis. Of splendid aromatic opulence, it remains supported by the saline freshness characteristic of the terroir.

The Scharzhofberger Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese represents the absolute pinnacle of the hierarchy, produced only in ideal years from individually dried and fully botrytised berries. Made in infinitesimal quantities, it is one of the rarest and most expensive sweet wines in the world, of legendary intensity and longevity.

The Scharzhofberger Riesling Eiswein, produced in certain years when frost conditions allow, is born from grapes pressed while frozen on the vine. Of extreme concentration and vivacity, it combines dazzling sweetness and razor-sharp acidity in a spectacular balance.

The Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling, from the Le Gallais estate, is the house's second great cru, often considered the second wine of the Scharzhofberger. Coming from a well south-facing slate slope, it is also produced in Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese, and higher qualities, in a slightly softer style but always of great mineral purity.

Château Belá is the riesling produced by Egon Müller in Slovakia, in collaboration with Miroslav Petrech. More accessible and often vinified in a dry style, it offers a different expression of the grape variety while bearing the house's signature precision.

The Kanta Riesling is Egon Müller's Australian cuvée, produced in the Adelaide Hills with Michael Andrewarta. Dry and aromatic, it extends the adventure of riesling to other latitudes, faithful to the rigour and finesse of the Saar estate.
