Domaine du Tunnel, Northern Rhône: a beautiful estate in Cornas, Saint Peray, Saint Joseph and Condrieu
The TUNNEL estate located in St Peray, was created in 1996 by Stéphane Robert. He began with only 2.5 hectares of vines located on the right bank of the Rhône, in Ardèche in the Cornas, Saint-Péray, and Saint-Joseph appellations.

Since 2013, Domaine du Tunnel has completed its range with a Condrieu, and currently, the wine operation extends over 11 hectares (including 8 hectares in red), in the communes of Cornas, St-Péray, Glun, Mauves, Tournon sur Rhône and Chavanay. The cuvées are vinified essentially from old hillside or terraced vines, on granitic soils. The grape varieties used are Syrah (Cornas / St-Joseph), Marsanne and Roussanne (St-Péray) as well as Viognier (Condrieu). In 2014, Stéphane Robert had a cellar dug in an old railway tunnel, with a breathtaking view of the Château de Crussol. Stéphane Robert produces precise and modern wines, considered as references within the Cornas and St-Péray appellations. The red Syrah wines benefit from aging, and one can say that the cuvées offered by Domaine du Tunnel differ from a certain local style, sometimes rustic and solar, frequent in these 2 appellations. With a significant proportion of old vines and rigorous work in the vineyard to achieve extremely controlled yields, the style of Domaine du Tunnel wines is in a register of concentrated richness, but also of silky finesse. The wine range includes 3 Cornas: the classic cuvée comes from a selection of about fifteen parcels, and offers a gourmet and lively profile, with fine tannins coated with robust notes of black fruit, tapenade and spices. The Cornas "Vin Noir" cuvée is a selection of 3 century-old vines planted on hillsides in the lieux-dits Champelrose, Eygats and la Combe. The "Vin Noir" delivers delicately scents of black fruit, pepper and empyreumatic notes. It proves deeper and more tannic than the estate's classic Cornas and has beautiful aging potential of at least 10/12 years. A rare cuvée called "Pur Noir" is drawn from a selection of one or two barrels of Vin Noir. The St-Joseph comes from vines with an average age of 50 years in Tournon sur Rhône, Mauves and Glun. This red wine, elegant and voluminous, develops aromas of red and black berries and sweet spices on the nose. It seduces with its pleasant texture, and the precision of its fruit reveals beautiful tannins that pair perfectly with lamb. In white, Domaine du Tunnel produces a St-Péray of pure Roussanne perfectly balanced and beautifully fresh. 2 other cuvées of St-Péray (one 100% Marsanne, and one 80% Marsanne and 20% Roussanne) are also produced at Domaine du Tunnel as well as a recent cuvée of Condrieu. A domain to recommend.
