Thanks to an iron will and the decision to promote viticulture without chemical products, to use horse-drawn ploughing, to work according to lunar cycles, to harvest only in the morning and in several passes in order to obtain maximum ripeness of the grapes, and finally to use a small 2000-kilo press; the results obtained have since set Benoît DEHU on the path of well-deserved success, for this iconoclastic winegrower who wished to restore the noble credentials of Pinot Meunier. …. In the early 2010s, with his 1.7 Ha, Benoît DÉHU only produced 3 cuvées of Meunier: a Champagne, a white Coteau Champenois and a red Coteau Champenois, for a total of 3,000 bottles. Since then, the range has expanded with the Champagne cuvée "Initiation", which is a blanc de Noirs brut nature (a blend of 78% Pinot Meunier and 22% Pinot Noir), presenting floral and fruity aromas, followed by hints of acacia honey and flint, and finally notes of bread crust and yeast. On the palate, the wine is elegant and fruity with citrus notes, of fine intensity on a long, sapid finish. The Champagne cuvée "La Rue des Noyers" displays a light straw robe with very fine bubbles. This wine reveals complex aromas of smoked wood, blackberry, cherry, saffron, meringue, grapefruit, lemon, plum, redcurrant, and slightly oxidative apple, with some herbaceous notes. On the palate, we find spicy notes of ginger, citrus, caramelised fruits, cherry, smoked flint and mushroom. The finish is extremely dynamic and impressively long. The flavour and taste are in constant evolution in a festival of sensations. A very fine Champagne for cellaring, whose richness and roundness of the Pinot Meunier are counterbalanced by the freshness and minerality of the clay terroir. The dosage is minimal, at 1 g. Finally, the cuvée "l'Orme" comes from a small 1.5 Ha plot planted 100% with Pinot Noir (a plot located at the foot of the hill of Rue des Noyers), whose name "l'Orme" derives from the fact that before the vines, elm trees were planted here. Here the power of the Pinot Noir distinguishes the wine, of great complexity and exceptional length. We recommend letting it age a little, in order to enjoy it at its optimum. Benoît DÉHU crafts great Champagne wines with multiple facets that combine freshness, sapidity, fullness, finesse, complexity, elegance, depth, length and texture alike… The only real challenge is being able to obtain some, as the limited production is snapped up by great enthusiasts in search of exceptional wines.
