History of Champagne J.M. Sélèque

The history of Champagne J.M. Sélèque begins in 1925, when Henri Sélèque, freshly arrived from Poland, settled in Boursault in Champagne. Together with his wife, Françoise Bagnost, who came from a family of Champagne winegrowers, he took the first steps of what would become a remarkable family and viticultural adventure. In the 1960s, Henri planted his first vines in Moussy and Pierry, already reputed terroirs, and in 1969 he produced his first bottles with the help of his father-in-law, Jean Bagnost.

The arrival of Richard Sélèque, Henri's son, in 1974 marked a turning point. Trained in oenology, Richard modernized the estate's viticultural and winemaking practices, invested in state-of-the-art equipment, and expanded the family's viticultural heritage. The torch was taken up in 2008 by Jean-Marc Sélèque, Henri's grandson, who brought to the estate his international experience gained in the vineyards of Napa Valley and Australia.

Terroirs and Vines of Champagne J.M. Sélèque

Champagne J.M. Sélèque benefits from an exceptional viticultural heritage. Its 9 hectares, spread across 45 plots in 7 emblematic villages (Pierry, Moussy, Épernay, Dizy, Boursault, Mardeuil, and Vertus), embody the diversity of the Champagne terroirs. The soils of the Coteaux Sud d'Épernay blend clay, chalk, and flint, offering ideal conditions for the three Champagne grape varieties: chardonnay (50%), pinot meunier (40%), and pinot noir (10%).

The vines, with an average age of 40 years, are cultivated according to organic and biodynamic principles. Jean-Marc Sélèque ensures the natural balance of the soils is preserved through plowing, cover cropping, and the application of herbal preparations. These practices guarantee healthy, ripe grapes that fully express the richness of the terroirs.

Vinifications of Champagne J.M. Sélèque

In the cellar, every step of the vinification reflects a respect for the fruit and its terroir. The grapes, carefully sorted, are gently pressed using a modern press designed to preserve the integrity of the juices. The fermentations, carried out predominantly with indigenous yeasts, are slow and gentle to retain the purity of the aromas.

Champagne J.M. Sélèque relies on plot-by-plot vinification to reveal the specificities of each terroir. The wines are aged in a variety of vessels (stainless steel tanks, large oak casks, barrels, amphorae), allowing the textures and balances to be refined. Finally, extended lees aging combined with low dosage gives the champagnes a remarkable finesse and depth.

The Cuvées of Champagne J.M. Sélèque

Solessence

This emblematic cuvée is a reflection of the estate's terroirs. Blending 50% chardonnay, 40% pinot meunier, and 10% pinot noir, it captivates with its balance and expressiveness. Available in Extra-Brut, Rosé, and Brut Nature versions.

Quintette

A blend of five chardonnay plots, this cuvée expresses the full finesse and mineral tension of the estate's finest chardonnay terroirs.

Soliste Meunier

Sourced from old pinot meunier vines, this champagne reveals a fruity depth and saline precision, typical of the chalky soils of Pierry.

Soliste Meunier Rosé

This gastronomic rosé, crafted from specific plots, reveals exceptional complexity and a lush texture.

Soliste Pinot Noir

This blanc de noirs, sourced from late-harvest pinot noir plots, offers a unique freshness and elegance, sublimating the clay-limestone terroirs of Pierry.

Soliste Chardonnay

A blend of two adjacent plots in Pierry, this blanc de blancs cuvée marries richness and tension, with a remarkable aging potential.

Partition

The estate's masterpiece, this cuvée blends grapes from seven iconic plots and ages for five years on laths. Dominated by chardonnay, it impresses with its silky texture and infinite aromatic nuances.

Dizy Blanc

A Coteaux Champenois white wine sourced from ripe, concentrated chardonnay, aged 18 months in oak barrels.

Pierry Rouge

This still red wine, crafted from pinot noir, expresses the depth and structure of the Gouttes d'Or terroir in Pierry.

Ratafia

A sweet delicacy crafted from end-of-press juice and aged in large oak barrels, perfect to accompany desserts.
