The History of Champagne J.M. Sélèque

The story of Champagne J.M. Sélèque begins in 1925, when Henri Sélèque, newly arrived from Poland, settled in Boursault in Champagne. Together with his wife, Françoise Bagnost, who came from a family of Champagne winegrowers, he took the first step in what would become a remarkable family winemaking venture. In the 1960s, Henri planted his first vines in Moussy and Pierry, already renowned terroirs, and in 1969, he made his first bottles with the help of his father-in-law, Jean Bagnost.

The arrival of Henri’s son Richard Sélèque in 1974 marked a turning point. Trained in enology, Richard modernized the estate’s vineyard and winemaking practices, invested in state-of-the-art equipment, and expanded the family’s vineyard holdings. In 2008, Henri’s grandson Jean-Marc Sélèque took over, bringing to the estate the international experience he had gained in the vineyards of Napa Valley and Australia.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Champagne J.M. Sélèque

Champagne J.M. Sélèque has an exceptional vineyard heritage. Its 9 hectares, spread across 45 plots in 7 notable villages (Pierry, Moussy, Épernay, Dizy, Boursault, Mardeuil, and Vertus), embody the diversity of Champagne’s terroirs. The soils of the Coteaux Sud d’Épernay combine clay, chalk, and flint, providing ideal conditions for the three Champagne grape varieties: Chardonnay (50%), Pinot Meunier (40%), and Pinot Noir (10%).

The vines, averaging 40 years of age, are farmed according to organic and biodynamic principles. Jean-Marc Sélèque works to preserve the soils’ natural balance through plowing, cover crops, and the use of plant-based preparations. These practices ensure healthy, ripe grapes that express the full richness of their terroirs.

Winemaking at Champagne J.M. Sélèque

In the winery, every stage of winemaking reflects respect for the fruit and its terroir. The carefully sorted grapes are gently pressed in a modern press that preserves the integrity of the juice. Fermentation, carried out mostly with indigenous yeasts, is slow and gentle to retain the purity of the aromas.

Champagne J.M. Sélèque vinifies grapes plot by plot to reveal the distinctive character of each terroir. The wines are aged in a range of vessels (stainless steel tanks, large oak casks, barrels, and amphorae), allowing their textures and balance to be refined. Finally, extended aging on the lees, combined with a low dosage, gives the champagnes remarkable finesse and depth.

The Cuvées of Champagne J.M. Sélèque

Solessence

This signature cuvée reflects the estate’s terroirs. A blend of 50% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Meunier, and 10% Pinot Noir, it delights with its balance and expressiveness. Available in Extra-Brut, Rosé, and Brut Nature versions.

Quintette

A blend of Chardonnay from five plots, this cuvée expresses all the finesse and mineral tension of the estate’s finest Chardonnay terroirs.

Soliste Meunier

Made from old Pinot Meunier vines, this champagne reveals fruity depth and saline precision, characteristic of Pierry’s chalky soils.

Soliste Meunier Rosé

Made from selected plots, this food-friendly rosé reveals exceptional complexity and a full-bodied texture.

Soliste Pinot Noir

Made from Pinot Noir grown on later-ripening plots, this blanc de noirs offers distinctive freshness and elegance, showcasing Pierry’s clay-limestone terroirs.

Soliste Chardonnay

A blend of two adjoining plots in Pierry, this blanc de blancs cuvée combines richness and tension, with remarkable aging potential.

Partition

The estate’s masterpiece, this cuvée blends grapes from seven iconic plots and spends five years aging on its lees in bottle. Predominantly Chardonnay, it impresses with its silky texture and seemingly endless aromatic nuances.

Dizy Blanc

A white Côteaux Champenois made from ripe, concentrated Chardonnay and aged for 18 months in oak barrels.

Pierry Rouge

This still red wine, made from Pinot Noir, expresses the depth and structure of the Gouttes d’Or terroir in Pierry.

Ratafia

A sweet delight made from the juice of the final pressing and aged in large oak barrels, perfect with desserts.
