Based in Coulommes-la-Montagne, in the heart of the Petite Montagne de Reims, Champagne Leclere-Minard is one of the most promising estates of the new Champenois generation. Led by Clément Leclere, fourth-generation winegrower, trained at David Léclapart in Champagne and Julien Guillot in Burgundy, the estate cultivates 2.3 hectares of family vines spread across three distinct terroirs (Coulommes, Tramery and Courmas) with a very considered approach, free from herbicides and with trials in organic farming. Parcel-by-parcel vinifications in oak barrels, indigenous yeasts and the absence of chaptalization, fining or filtration give rise to pure, vibrant Champagnes deeply rooted in their terroir.
The story of Champagne Leclere-Minard is rooted in Coulommes-la-Montagne, a small wine-growing village nestled on the western heights of the Montagne de Reims, where the Leclere family has been cultivating the vine for four generations. Long embedded in a discreet, cooperative tradition, the Leclere-Minard family saw their estate take a decisive turn with the arrival of Clément Leclere. After an initial career in accountancy and a formative experience in Australia, this passionate young man chose to return to viticulture, obtained an oenology degree and completed his training with a university diploma in wine and spirits law.
His pursuit of excellence led him to two major figures in natural wine, David Léclapart in Champagne, where he spent two years as an apprentice, then Julien Guillot at Domaine des Vignes du Maynes in the Mâconnais. In 2018, he also collaborated with Maison Tarlant, before taking full management of the family's 2.3 hectares in 2021. That same year, he signed his very first cuvée, Trame Noire, in only 993 bottles, marking the beginning of a bold and confidential winemaking adventure, already acclaimed by the most discerning lovers of grower Champagne.
The vineyard of Champagne Leclere-Minard spans 2.3 hectares divided into historic plots across three complementary major terroirs. Coulommes-la-Montagne offers clay, sand and silt soils that bring roundness, fruit and depth. The terroirs of Tramery and Courmas, located in the Vallée de l'Ardre, feature shallow soils resting quickly on limestone bedrock, lending the wines a particularly vibrant mineral tension and a saline signature characteristic of the Petite Montagne de Reims.
The estate cultivates the three great Champenois grape varieties, with a privileged place given to Pinot Meunier, the emblematic variety of the area, complemented by Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Viticulture is conducted in a highly reasoned manner, drawing extensively on the principles of organic farming. Herbicides have been banned for several years, the soils are worked with a crawler tractor, and Clément experiments plot by plot to nurture a vineyard in full transition towards organic certification. The old vines, some planted as far back as the late 1960s, constitute the genetic and qualitative heritage of the estate.
In the cellar, Clément Leclere rigorously applies the principles inherited from his mentor David Léclapart, founded on non-intervention and absolute respect for the grape. The harvests are done by hand, carefully sorted, and the press fractions are selected with precision to retain only the noblest juices. Vinification is carried out plot by plot, in oak barrels and demi-muids, in order to preserve and magnify the identity of each lieu-dit. Fermentations take place exclusively with indigenous yeasts, without chaptalization, fining or filtration.
This philosophy of zero chemical inputs continues throughout the ageing process, conducted on fine lees for many months in wood, for both the still wines destined for Champagne and the still Coteaux Champenois. The second fermentation then takes place in bottle, followed by a long ageing on laths, often exceeding three years, before disgorgement à la volée generally without dosage. The result: extra brut and brut nature Champagnes that are simultaneously taut, deep and expressive, in which the purity of fruit, the parcel signature and the freshness of the vintage are expressed without the slightest artifice.
Frimas: the estate's true signature cuvée in its sparkling version, this Premier Cru Champagne evokes the first winter chills that give it its name. It is produced as a blend and as a 100% Chardonnay Blanc de Blancs version depending on the vintage, disgorged as Extra Brut. On the nose, notes of lemon curd, Granny Smith apple, greengage and fresh brioche precede a fresh, fruity palate with a finely bitter finish.
La Règle d'Or: a Premier Cru blended cuvée bringing together the three Champenois grape varieties, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. Slightly golden colour with very fine bubbles, nose of apple, hazelnut, almond and subtle brioche notes, a fruity and lively palate of excellent balance — this cuvée embodies the harmonious synthesis of the Leclere-Minard style.
Chardonnay de Coulommes: a single-parcel, single-variety Champagne made from 100% Chardonnay grown on the family plots of Coulommes-la-Montagne. Vinified in barrels, aged on fine lees, unfined and unfiltered, it offers a chiselled, mineral expression of Chardonnay on this clay-sandy terroir, in a very small, confidential series.
Meunier de Coulommes: the Meunier counterpart to the previous cuvée, this 100% Pinot Meunier from Coulommes-la-Montagne expresses all the generosity of the flagship grape variety of the western slopes of the Montagne de Reims. Confidential production of approximately 600 bottles, barrel-aged, disgorgement à la volée without dosage, resulting in a fleshy, saline and deep Champagne.
Meunier de Courmas: another parcel-by-parcel perspective on Meunier, this time from the shallow limestone soils of Courmas in the Vallée de l'Ardre. The terroir lends the cuvée a more mineral and taut structure, underscoring Meunier's capacity to reveal the stone when vinified with exacting standards and patience.
La Trame Noire (Coteaux Champenois Blanc): the first cuvée signed by Clément in 2021, a 100% Meunier Coteaux Champenois blanc from the Mont Robert plot in Tramery, planted in 1969 with a south-east exposure. Parcel-by-parcel vinification in barrels and demi-muids, spontaneous fermentations, long ageing without fining or filtration, zero dosage. Dense, vibrant profile, with notes of macerated red fruits, liquorice and cocoa, supported by a saline acidity.
La Trame Noire (Champagne): the sparkling version of the estate's flagship cuvée, 100% Pinot Meunier from Tramery, aged in barrels and then for a long time on laths. Disgorged à la volée without dosage, it delivers a ripe, deep and telluric Champagne, where the fine bubble extends the aromatic singularity of the lieu-dit Mont Robert.
La Trame Rouge: a red Coteaux Champenois made from Pinot Meunier, vinified with a minimalist approach in tank then aged in barrels. Luminous colour, silky palate, notes of red and black fruits, soft spices and garrigue — this confidential still red wine is best enjoyed slightly chilled and perfectly completes the estate's Trame trilogy.
Le Chemin des Roses: a 100% Meunier Coteaux Champenois blanc from the Sous les Roses plot in Courmas, planted in 1970 with a south-west orientation. Parcel-by-parcel vinification in barrels and demi-muids, spontaneous fermentations, ageing on fine lees, unfined and unfiltered, zero dosage. Golden colour with salmon hues, nose of red fruits, apple and brioche, a vinous and taut palate with a remarkably extended chalky finish.
