Wines from the Dutraive Family: buy at the best price

The Dutraive Family is one of the most respected, beloved, and influential figures in contemporary natural Beaujolais. Jean-Louis Dutraive, considered one of the pioneers of natural wine in the region "just like the great Marcel Lapierre", has been running Domaine de la Grand'Cour since 1989, one of the oldest estates in Fleurie, purchased in 1969 by his father Jean, who was then president of the Vignerons du Beaujolais. Across 11.5 hectares of old vines in Fleurie (9.7 ha, three lieu-dits: Clos de la Grand'Cour as a monopole, Chapelle des Bois, and Champagne) and Brouilly (1.8 ha, a five-generation family inheritance in Charentay-Vuril), Jean-Louis produces Fleuries and Brouillys of remarkable finesse, elegance, and purity, under certified organic farming since 2009. He was the first Beaujolais winemaker invited to La Paulée, demonstrating that his wines rival the grand crus of Burgundy. Since 2016, after losing 90% of the harvest to hail, his children Justin, Ophélie, and Lucas launched the "Famille Dutraive" label, a natural négociant sourcing organic grapes from winemaker friends in Saint-Amour, Chiroubles, Chénas, Lantignié, and Beaujolais-Villages, in the same philosophy as the domaine.

History of Domaine de la Grand'Cour and the Famille Dutraive

The history of the Dutraive family in Fleurie began with Jean Dutraive, who purchased in 1969 one of the oldest estates in the appellation, Domaine de la Grand'Cour. Jean, who would go on to become president of the Vignerons du Beaujolais, took over 9 hectares of Fleurie on the terroirs of Grand'Cour, Chapelle des Bois and Champagne, and retained 1.6 hectares of Brouilly from the family property (five generations old) at Charentay-Vuril. His son Jean-Louis joined the estate in 1977 and succeeded him definitively in 1989. Jean-Louis is unanimously cited alongside Marcel Lapierre, Jean Foillard and a few others as one of the pioneers of natural Beaujolais, having embarked on the organic conversion of the estate long before such an approach became fashionable. Ecocert certification was obtained in 2009.

Jean-Louis's contagious "joie de vivre" has made him a central figure in the natural wine scene: his cellar has an "open-door policy" welcoming young local winemakers whom he advises and mentors. He was the first Beaujolais producer to be invited to La Paulée, a demonstration of the excellence of his wines alongside the great Burgundian crus. In 2016, a catastrophic combination of frost and hail destroyed 90% of the estate's harvest. To weather the crisis, Jean-Louis and his children Justin, Ophélie and Lucas launched the "Famille Dutraive" label: a natural négociant structure, purchasing certified organic grapes from fellow winegrowers in the other appellations of Beaujolais (Saint-Amour, Chiroubles, Chénas, Lantignié, Beaujolais-Villages), vinified with the same philosophy as the estate wines.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine de la Grand'Cour

The vineyard of Domaine de la Grand'Cour extends over 11.5 hectares, primarily in the Fleurie appellation (9.7 ha) with a small portion in Brouilly (1.8 ha). In Fleurie, the vines are spread across three complementary lieux-dits. The Clos de la Grand'Cour is a 6.5-hectare monopole adjacent to the cellar, in the southern part of the Fleurie appellation, on granitic soils. La Chapelle des Bois is a 1.8-hectare plot in the south of the appellation, north-west facing, between 250 and 300 metres in altitude, with vines aged 20 to 70 years. Champagne is the third lieu-dit of the estate, contributing its own expression to the aromatic profile of the blends.

The entire estate has been cultivated under certified organic farming since 2009. Harvesting is done by hand, with meticulous picking and careful transport to the cellar. All the vines are trained in the gobelet style, following Beaujolais tradition. The old vines of the Clos de la Grand'Cour, some of which are over 70 years old, produce grapes of natural concentration and complexity. In Brouilly, the 1.8 hectares inherited over five generations are located on the terroirs of Charentay-Vuril, on the slopes of Mont Brouilly.

Winemaking at Domaine de la Grand'Cour

Winemaking at Domaine de la Grand'Cour and at Famille Dutraive follows the principle of minimal intervention. The grapes are whole-bunch vatted at low temperature (7–8°C) to initiate a semi-carbonic maceration with indigenous yeasts. No sulphur during vinification or ageing. Very little or no sulphur at blending. No filtration or fining. Ageing takes place in used Burgundian barrels, large oak casks or concrete tanks depending on the cuvée and vintage. For the Clos de la Grand'Cour, ageing lasts 7 months with 50% in used barrels and 50% in large oak casks. For the Chapelle des Bois, ageing takes place in concrete tanks. The Brouilly is aged according to the same principles. For the Famille Dutraive cuvées, the same philosophy applies: cold vatting, indigenous yeasts, no SO2, no filtration.

The cuvées of Domaine de la Grand'Cour and Famille Dutraive

Fleurie Clos de la Grand'Cour (Domaine) : The flagship cuvée and "fine wine" of the estate, sourced from the 6.5-hectare monopole adjacent to the cellar in the south of Fleurie. Cold vatting in concrete tanks, indigenous yeasts, 7 months ageing with 50% in used barrels and 50% in large oak casks. An exceptionally fine and deep red wine, with the floral and fruity aromas characteristic of Fleurie (cherry, violet, peony) and a silky, elegant texture. "The cuvée that proves Gamay can rival the great Burgundian crus." Ageing potential of 8 to 12 years.

Fleurie Chapelle des Bois (Domaine) : A single-plot red cuvée from the 1.8 hectares of the lieu-dit Chapelle des Bois, north-west facing between 250 and 300 metres in altitude, with vines aged 20 to 70 years. Aged in concrete tanks. A red wine of remarkable finesse and drinkability, in a lighter and more immediately accessible style than the Clos de la Grand'Cour. "A magnificent, very fine, very easy-drinking Fleurie." Aromas of cherry, raspberry and flowers, with an airy and silky palate.

Fleurie La Tonne (Domaine) : A red cuvée sourced from an old wooden vat ("la tonne") in which certain lots are aged. A red wine of a distinctive expression, with aromas of cherry, strawberry, violet and sometimes raspberry, with a very fresh palate. The most confidential cuvée of the estate in Fleurie, highly sought after by enthusiasts for its unique character and singular ageing.

Brouilly (Domaine) : A red Brouilly cuvée from the 1.8 hectares inherited over five generations at Charentay-Vuril, on Mont Brouilly. Aged according to the estate's philosophy. A red wine of fine cru expression, with the aromas of black cherry and violet characteristic of Brouilly, a fresh and easy-drinking palate. The cuvée that connects the family to its historical roots in Brouilly.

Famille Dutraive Saint-Amour : A red négociant cuvée made from organic grapes selected in the Saint-Amour appellation, the northernmost cru of Beaujolais. Vinified according to the same principles as the estate wines. A fragrant and elegant red wine, with aromas of kirsch, spices and flowers, typical of Saint-Amour.

Famille Dutraive Chiroubles : A red négociant cuvée made from organic grapes in Chiroubles, the highest-altitude cru of Beaujolais. An airy and delicate red wine, with the lightness and finesse characteristic of this fresh and floral cru.

Famille Dutraive Chénas : A red négociant cuvée made from organic grapes in Chénas, the smallest cru of Beaujolais, known for its generous wines with good ageing potential. A more structured and deep red wine than the Saint-Amour and Chiroubles cuvées, with aromas of dark fruits and spices.

Famille Dutraive Beaujolais-Villages Lantignié : A red négociant cuvée made from organic grapes in Lantignié, a Beaujolais-Villages commune at the heart of the vineyard. Vatted in concrete tanks, indigenous yeasts, no sulphur, aged 6 months in tanks. "A fresh, light vintage offering generous fruit." The accessible and festive entry-level cuvée of the Famille Dutraive range.
