Guillaume Sergent

Guillaume Sergent Champagne wines: buy at the best price

Based in Vrigny, a Premier Cru village in the Montagne de Reims, Guillaume Sergent cultivates just 1.7 hectares of vines spread across eight carefully selected plots, between Vrigny and Coulommes-la-Montagne. A trained oenologist with a passion for the geology of his terroir, he produces around 4,000 bottles per year under his own name, making his Champagnes highly sought-after rarities among enthusiasts worldwide. His two flagship cuvées, Les Prés Dieu (Blanc de Blancs, 100% Chardonnay) and Le Chemin des Chappes (Blanc de Noirs, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier), each embody in their own way the most sincere and precise expression of a unique terroir in Champagne.

History of Guillaume Sergent

The Sergent family has been rooted in the hillsides of Vrigny since at least the mid-19th century, perpetuating from generation to generation a winemaking tradition deeply attached to this terroir of the Montagne de Reims. Under the Roger Sergent label, Guillaume's parents had their wines produced at the cooperative, a common practice in the region. It was with the arrival of Guillaume — trained in oenology and enriched by significant experience at Maison Louis Roederer, where he was notably in charge of massale selection — that the estate took a radically new direction. In 2008, Guillaume took over the family property with his brother. His brother chose to sell his grapes to Moët et Chandon, while Guillaume decided to produce his own Champagnes from just over one hectare of vines. His first personal bottles were born in 2011, with only 600 examples, marking the beginning of a demanding and passionate winemaking adventure.

Since his discreet beginnings, Guillaume Sergent has continuously grown his project, gradually increasing his production to around 4,000 bottles per year, while preserving the artisanal spirit and rigour that have earned him his reputation. Quickly noticed by leading guides and specialist wine merchants around the world, this young winemaker has established his own style, founded on patience, meticulous observation of his plots, and the rejection of all oenological artifice.

Guillaume Sergent's Terroirs and Vineyards

Guillaume Sergent's vineyard spans approximately 1.7 hectares, divided into eight plots located in the Premier Cru villages of Vrigny and Coulommes-la-Montagne, in the heart of the Montagne de Reims. The truly remarkable characteristic of this terroir lies in the nature of its soils: unlike the chalk that dominates much of the Champagne vineyard, the heights of Vrigny rest on deep Cuisian sands, scattered with fossil shells and Bartonian limestone debris. These humus-rich sands, characteristic of north-east-facing slopes close to the forest, lend the wines a floral and fruity aromatic signature of great finesse, as well as a salinity and mineral tension that are entirely unique. The plots situated on the lower hillsides, meanwhile, present more limestone and chalk, contributing structure and depth.

All three Champagne grape varieties — Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier — are represented on the estate. The vines, some planted by massale selection as early as 1972, display a respectable average age that contributes to the concentration and complexity of the wines. Guillaume Sergent cultivates his plots with a resolutely environmentally conscious approach: no insecticides, natural ground cover to encourage biodiversity, work according to the lunar calendar, and, since 2019, an official organic certification process. His sandy terroir, rare in Champagne, is at the heart of the identity of each of his cuvées and constitutes the most compelling argument for any enthusiast wishing to purchase an authentic terroir wine.

Guillaume Sergent's Winemaking

Guillaume Sergent's winemaking philosophy rests on a fundamental principle: allowing the terroir to express itself without constraint. Without his own winery, he uses the cooperative's pneumatic press in Vrigny for juice extraction, then oversees the entire winemaking process himself. Alcoholic fermentation takes place exclusively in four- to six-year-old oak barrels with a capacity of 400 litres — a deliberate choice that preserves the freshness and minerality of the wine without imparting a pronounced oakiness. Each cuvée then undergoes complete malolactic fermentation, bringing a roundness and acid integration greatly appreciated in these naturally taut sandy terroirs. The wines are bottled in January following the harvest, without filtration, fining, or cold stabilisation, ensuring the most natural expression possible.

The yeasts used are exclusively indigenous yeasts, naturally present on the grapes and in the cellar. The dosage, deliberately minimal, is kept at 1 gram per litre, placing Guillaume Sergent's Champagnes in the Extra Brut category, where dryness and precision take precedence over sweetness. Riddling is carried out entirely by hand for each of his cuvées, in keeping with traditional methods. The use of sulphur is reduced to the strict minimum, intervening only once during pressing. This holistic approach, combining tradition with modern exigency, places Guillaume Sergent's winemaking among the most honest and coherent in the entire Champagne appellation.

Guillaume Sergent's Cuvées

Les Prés Dieu, Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut, Champagne Premier Cru: The estate's emblematic cuvée, Les Prés Dieu is a Blanc de Blancs crafted from 100% Chardonnay, assembled from two Premier Cru plots with complementary characters. The plot "Les Prés", located in Vrigny at mid-slope with a north-east exposure, rests on humus-rich and shell-laden Cuisian sands. The plot "Les Vignes Dieu", situated in the neighbouring commune of Coulommes-la-Montagne with a full south exposure, features Cuisian sands enriched with Bartonian limestone debris on the surface. These two sandy terroirs, harvested and pressed together, give rise to a Champagne of striking finesse and minerality. On the nose, Les Prés Dieu reveals a floral and fruity aromatic palette, with notes of green apple, white flowers, pear, hazelnut, and a fine chalky nuance. The palate is creamy and taut, carried by very fine bubbles and a characteristic iodine-tinged salinity from the sandy soils. The finish is long and precise, with citrus and mineral accents. Dosed at 1 g/l, this Extra Brut Champagne is vinified in demi-muids using indigenous yeasts, with complete malolactic fermentation.

Le Chemin des Chappes, Blanc de Noirs Extra Brut, Champagne Premier Cru: Born with the 2014 harvest, this Blanc de Noirs cuvée is the sandy and powerful expression of Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier from Vrigny. It is assembled in equal parts from two distinct plots in the Premier Cru village of Vrigny: "Les Grands Chemins", planted with Pinot Noir on east-facing sands, and "Les Chappes", planted with Pinot Meunier on clay-limestone sands with an east-west exposure. The vines, sourced from massale selection and planted in 1972 and 1982, display a fine maturity that is reflected in the concentration and depth of the wine. On the nose, Le Chemin des Chappes offers intense aromas of citrus, red fruits (cherry, raspberry), white flowers, and a delicate oxidative nuance. The palate is broad and structured, with abundant bubbles that do not overwhelm the fruit, a beautiful tension, and a saline, chalky finish of great persistence. Vinified according to the same principles as Les Prés Dieu (old oak barrels, indigenous yeasts, without filtration or fining), this Extra Brut Champagne dosed at 1 g/l is a brilliant demonstration of the potential of the sandy terroirs of the Montagne de Reims.
