A family estate created by Nicolas Groffier in the 19th century, with most of its parcels acquired in 1930, it is now Nicolas who has been running the estate since 2005. Located in the town of Morey Saint Denis, the Groffier Robert estate extends over 8 hectares and exclusively produces red Burgundy wines made from Pinot Noir, on limestone and clay-limestone soils using sustainable farming practices. The Robert Groffier estate produces two Burgundy Grands Crus: Bonnes Mares and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, as well as the emblematic parcel of the famous Premier Cru Les Amoureuses.

History of Domaine Robert Groffier Père et Fils

The history of Domaine Robert Groffier Père et Fils begins in the 19th century with Frédéric Groffier, a pioneer of family viticulture. In the 1930s, his son Jules Groffier, a former cyclist passionate about vines, consolidated the vineyard by acquiring prestigious parcels. It was under the impetus of Robert Groffier, in the 1950s, that the estate began bottling its own wines, marking a decisive turning point towards international recognition. In 2005, Nicolas Groffier, Robert's grandson, took the reins with a bold vision: to enhance the quality of the cuvées while remaining faithful to ancestral know-how. Joined by his sister Julie, Nicolas brought a wind of modernity, notably by reducing the use of new wood and refining vinification techniques. Since 2014, the estate has adopted an innovative strategy by marketing only half of each vintage, reserving the other half for aging in the cellar, thus guaranteeing wines at maturity ready to be savored. This approach, praised by experts, strengthens the estate's reputation as an essential reference of Burgundy.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Robert Groffier Père et Fils

Domaine Robert Groffier Père et Fils extends over nearly 8 hectares of vineyards, mainly located in the prestigious appellations of Chambolle-Musigny and Gevrey-Chambertin. Despite its headquarters in Morey-Saint-Denis, the estate owns no parcels in this commune, focusing on exceptional terroirs elsewhere. Among its jewels, the estate is the largest owner of Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru Les Amoureuses, with 1 hectare of vines, a mythical cru often compared to a Grand Cru for its finesse. The estate also cultivates 1 hectare of Bonnes Mares Grand Cru and 0.42 hectares of Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru, as well as parcels in the Premiers Crus Les Hauts Doix and Les Sentiers in Chambolle-Musigny, and the village Gevrey-Chambertin Les Seuvrées.

The soils, composed of brown limestone and clayey-loam, offer ideal depth for the vines, whose average age exceeds 40 years. These old vines, planted in Cordon de Royat, allow yields to be limited and aromas to be concentrated. Nicolas Groffier practices sustainable viticulture, banning herbicides since 2005 and limiting treatments to what is strictly necessary. The vines are plowed, rigorously weeded, and the grapes are hand-harvested with a double selection (in the vineyard and on the sorting table) to guarantee optimal quality. This meticulous attention to terroir gives the wines a pure and authentic expression, a true reflection of their origin.

Vinifications at Domaine Robert Groffier Père et Fils

The winemaking philosophy of Domaine Robert Groffier Père et Fils is based on minimal intervention to allow the terroir and vintage to express themselves. Nicolas Groffier adapts his techniques to each cuvée and each harvest, with goldsmith-like precision. The grapes, harvested manually, undergo fermentation with indigenous yeasts after partial destemming (up to 20% whole bunches, compared to 50% twenty years ago, depending on the vintage). The berries are transferred without crushing into stainless steel vats, cooled to 10-12°C for 4 to 5 days for optimal extraction of colors and aromas. Short and frequent punch-downs are carried out, sometimes supplemented by occasional pumping over, for a total maceration of approximately 20 days.

After fermentation, the wines are aged in oak barrels, with a proportion of new wood reduced to 15-25% for most cuvées, except for Chambertin Clos de Bèze, which benefits from new oak. Nicolas favors Allier oak (Tronçais forest) for its finesse, and has recently adjusted his suppliers to minimize the impact of wood on the fruit. The wines are racked only once, a year after harvest, and return to stainless steel vats before bottling, carried out without fining or filtration. This artisanal approach guarantees age-worthy wines with a silky texture and natural concentration, ideal for a wine purchase intended to enrich a cellar.
