Champagne Coessens Largillier wines: buy at the best price

The Coessens family had owned 3.4 ha of vines for 5 generations in Ville sur Arce in the Côte de Bar, south of Troyes (Aube), and Jérôme Coessens decided in 2006 to launch his own Champagne Coessens brand, though not without experience, having served as head of cultivation in a major Champagne house for 7 years. This producer delivers ripe, powerful, rounded and vinous champagnes that will delight lovers who prefer more delicacy over the acidity found in certain cuvées.

The typicality of Domaine Coessens lies in the fact that all of the cuvées produced come from a single-owner lieu-dit called Largillier, taking its name from the clay found in the soil, which — after studying the dug soil pits — proved to be marly Kimmeridgian (low-fertility argilo-calcareous) and quite similar to the terroir of Chablis in Burgundy. On this 3.36-hectare Largillier monopole, a single grape variety is planted — Pinot Noir — which makes up all of the cuvées. The vines are between 35 and 45 years old, and production is carried out with great care. Jérôme Coessens even called upon Yves Confuron (from Domaine Confuron Cotetidot in Vosne Romanée) to produce a rare Coteaux-Champenois red wine (1,000 bottles). The other cuvées from Domaine Coessens are: the Largillier Brut Nature cuvée, with a flint nose, creamy and rich with a lovely freshness and a finish of beautiful bitterness. The Largillier Blanc de Noirs cuvée showcases red fruits with a beautiful, unctuous, ample and generous texture (the dosage is perceptible). The Largillier de Coessens Les Sens Boisés cuvée offers a fresh, lightly vanilla-scented nose and an ample, generous, brioche-like palate with ripe red and yellow fruits and dried fruits. It is a complex and rich white Champagne of great length. Finally, the Largillier Rosé de Coessens cuvée offers aromas of faded rose, peony, strawberry and cherry, with a vinous palate featuring tangy red and black fruits. It is a saignée rosé Champagne. The very limited production of Domaine Coessens hints at its true dimension as part of a meal or a dinner aperitif. The common thread running through all Champagne Coessens wines: they are lush and powerful, with a fine and delicate bubble. These are beautiful, expressive wines, and despite their rarity, prices remain remarkably reasonable. Not to be missed.
