Barrat Masson

From then on, Aurélie and Loïc Barat Masson restored the old farm buildings to house a traditional Coquard press, a fermentation room, a barrel cellar and a wine cellar. Aurélie, a trained enologist, strives to bring out the best in grapes harvested at optimal ripeness. She vinifies each parcel separately in stainless steel tanks, oak barrels and demi-muids to capture different expressions of the vineyard sites. Blending wines aged in these different vessels allows her to create precise cuvées with character. Even disgorgement is carried out by hand, in keeping with tradition. Barat Masson’s “Fleur de Craie” Champagne, made from 100% Chardonnay, is vinified mainly in stainless steel tanks and aged on fine lees for 10 months. It showcases Chardonnay’s finesse, with subtle hints of exotic fruit, fine bubbles and a lovely tension that extends the finish. Barat Masson’s “Les Margannes,” another 100% Chardonnay white Champagne, has a delicate, complex nose combining acacia honey and toast with white flowers and a light touch of vanilla. Aromas of dried fruit emerge with air. The palate is fresh and focused, with candied citrus zest and exceptionally fine floral notes. A delicate hint of preserved lemon lends the wine balance and lengthens the finish. Barat Masson’s “Grain d’Argile,” a cuvée of 30% Pinot Noir and 70% Chardonnay, is rich and vinous, reflecting its clay terroir, with notes of dried fruit (almond and hazelnut) mingling with red fruit (redcurrant). The palate is full and complex, with hints of lightly toasted hazelnut and a wonderfully smooth finish. Barat Masson’s “La Grande Homée,” a 100% Pinot Noir Brut Nature, is a rosé Champagne made by the saignée method, with 24 hours of maceration. Deep ruby in color, it offers a fresh, fruity nose with notes of raspberry, cherry and intense red fruit. The richly vinous palate echoes those flavors while retaining the tension needed to carry its finish through to inviting tannins. The Barrat Masson estate is on the rise, and its wines are well worth discovering while they remain accessible.
