André Robert Champagne wines: buy at the best price

André Robert Champagne is one of the finest confidential and demanding signatures of the Côte des Blancs. Based in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, the mythical Grand Cru village of Chardonnay, the family estate has been led since 2018 by Claire Robert, granddaughter of founder André, and her husband Jean-Baptiste Denizart, representing the fifth generation of winegrowers. From a vineyard of 14.5 hectares spread across 65 plots among Grand Crus, Premiers Crus and singular terroirs (Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger, Vertus, Étréchy, Cuis, Vallée de la Marne, Coteaux Vitryats), the estate produces Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Champagnes of rare precision, vinified predominantly in oak barrels, without malolactic fermentation, with extended lees aging (5 to 7 years) and deliberately low dosages.

History of Champagne André Robert

The history of Champagne André Robert is rooted in Mesnil-sur-Oger, in the heart of the Côte des Blancs, and stretches back five generations of winegrowers. It all began with Henri Robert (1881–1948), who, after the First World War, cultivated the vines "en foule" and created in the 1930s the very first winegrowers' cooperative in the village to pool their pressing and winemaking resources — a founding gesture in the local viticultural memory. His son André Robert, born in 1925, took over just after the Second World War, working the vines with his horse as his companion.

In 1960, André Robert acquired the historic Maison of the estate, whose magnificent 19th-century chalk cellars still house the bottles today. He released his first cuvée signed André Robert in 1962, officially founding the estate. His son Bertrand Robert took over in 1981, joined by his wife Colette from 1990 onwards. Since 2018, their daughter Claire Robert and her husband Jean-Baptiste Denizart have been running the estate, marking a new era of quality. The house also supplies Billecart-Salmon with still wines, a testament to the widely recognised quality of its grapes.

Terroirs and Vines of Champagne André Robert

The vineyard of Champagne André Robert covers approximately 14.5 hectares, spread across 65 plots scattered over several emblematic terroirs of Champagne. The heart of the estate is located at Mesnil-sur-Oger, a Grand Cru village renowned for producing the most precise and mineral Chardonnays in Champagne, on pure chalky soils. The main plots are found in the prestigious named sites Les Chétillons, Les Vaucherots, Les Coullemets du Midi and Les Finciarts. Chardonnay forms the central identity of the estate and accounts for the majority of production as Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru.

The estate also cultivates plots in Oger, another Grand Cru of the Côte des Blancs known for its more open and generous Chardonnays, as well as in Vertus, Étréchy and Cuis (Premiers Crus). In Vertus, a historic plot in the named site Le Mont d'Épernay includes Pinot Noir plantings dating back to 1963. Further afield, the vineyard extends into the Vallée de la Marne (Pinot Noir and Meunier on clay-limestone soils) as well as on the Coteaux Vitryats (Chardonnay on tuffeau). This exceptional geological diversity is one of the foundations of the complexity and length of the cuvées. The estate holds HVE (High Environmental Value) certification.

Winemaking at Champagne André Robert

In the cellar, Jean-Baptiste Denizart applies a "haute couture" winemaking approach aimed at extracting the quintessence of each individual plot. Harvesting is done by hand, and only the heart juice (the "cuvée", the first juice obtained through three successive pressings) is used for production. Pressing is slow and lightly sulphited, followed by a light and rapid settling. Alcoholic fermentation begins spontaneously with indigenous yeasts or a house pied de cuve. Malolactic fermentation is not carried out, as the very low pH of the Mesnil musts naturally inhibits the development of lactic acid bacteria.

Approximately 60% of the still wines are vinified and aged in 228-litre Bordeaux barrels for 10 months, the remainder in stainless steel tanks on fine lees, with controlled lees stirring. This approach brings texture, depth and complexity while preserving the characteristic tension of Mesnil. The estate's motto is patience: the Grand Crus rest for at least 5 to 7 years on laths in the precious 19th-century chalk cellar, at 11–13°C. The dosage liqueurs are prepared in-house using reserve wines and wines from the current year, allowing fine adjustment for each disgorgement, with deliberately low dosages (Brut, Extra-Brut or Nature).

The Cuvées of Champagne André Robert

The Les Jardins du Mesnil Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru cuvée is the house's emblematic signature wine, a unique expression of the overall terroir of Mesnil-sur-Oger (plains, mid-slopes and upper hillsides). 100% Chardonnay Grand Cru, vinified 50% in tanks and 50% in barrels, no malolactic fermentation, aged on lees for 4 to 5 years, dosage at 5 g/l. Pale gold colour, expressive nose of citrus, white flowers and buttery notes, fresh attack, upright, mineral, refined wine with a beautiful length.

The Les Jardins du Mesnil Extra-Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru cuvée is the Extra-Brut version of the previous cuvée, dosed at approximately 4 to 5 g/l. The low dosage highlights the freshness and mineral purity of the Mesnil Chardonnay, with a particularly clean, taut and saline finish.

The Les Jardins du Mesnil Nature Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru cuvée is the zero-dosage (Brut Nature) version of the flagship range, vinified 40% in stainless steel tanks and 60% in barrels. Minimum ageing of 4 years on lees. A Champagne of remarkable expressiveness and minerality: nose of white fruits and citrus with subtle spicy notes, a straight, precise and pure palate. Ideal as an aperitif or paired with a fish-based meal.

The Terre du Mesnil Millésime Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru cuvée is the estate's prestige vintage wine, crafted exclusively from Chardonnays at the heart of the Mesnil-sur-Oger terroir, from the named plots Les Vaucherots, Les Coullemets du Midi, Les Finciarts and Les Chétillons. Very low yields (5,000 to 6,000 kg/ha maximum), late harvest at full phenolic maturity. 100% vinification in 228-litre oak barrels, aged on fine lees for 10 months, bottled and then aged for 7 years in chalk cellars. Dosage at 5 g/l with house liqueur. A saline, linear Champagne with magnificent mineral depth.

The Les Vignes de Montigny cuvée is crafted from the estate's plots located in the Vallée de la Marne, planted with Pinot Noir and Meunier on clay-limestone soils. A fruitier and more full-bodied profile than the Blanc de Blancs, with a more immediate and indulgent character, perfect to accompany fine cuisine.

The Les Horizons cuvée expresses the singularity of the Coteaux Vitryats, a continental terroir renowned for its potential for Chardonnay on tuffeau. A more taut, more chalky and more saline cuvée, a testament to the ampelographic diversity exploited by the house.

The Pauline cuvée is a more confidential wine crafted primarily from Meunier sourced from plots in the Vallée de la Marne. A rounder, fruitier and more accessible aromatic profile, complementing the range with a different expression of the Champagne terroir.

The Rosé from Champagne André Robert, crafted by blending Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the old plots at Vertus (Le Mont d'Épernay, planted in 1963), offers an elegant and structured rosé with a delicate salmon hue, marked by red berries, rose, and a chalky finish characteristic of the Côte des Blancs.

The estate's Vieux Millésimes and Collection represent a precious rarity, born of long ageing in chalk cellars. These mature cuvées, late-disgorged, offer an exceptional insight into the evolution of the great Mesnil wines over time, with notes of autolysis, brioche, dried fruits, honey and white truffle — the hallmark of the finest vintage Blancs de Blancs.
