Château des Tours wines: buy at the best price

In 1997, Emmanuel Reynaud succeeded his uncle Jacques, who had died suddenly, at the helm of Châteaux Rayas and des Tours. The two properties have very different terroirs, however. At Château des Tours, he makes wines from nearly 40 hectares under the Vacqueyras, Côtes-du-Rhône, and Vin de Pays du Vaucluse designations, as well as a Vin de Table called Parisy. The latter is a rosé whose color recalls Bordeaux clairet, with aromas of rose. The red Côtes-du-Rhône and Vin de Pays du Vaucluse are robust wines that appeal to lovers of sun-ripened wines. The Vacqueyras needs more time to develop, but rewards patience with greater complexity.

The History of Château des Tours

Château des Tours entered the Reynaud family in 1935, when Louis Reynaud, already at the helm of Château Rayas in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, acquired this Sarrians property. The property takes its name from the towers flanking the main building. Originally a mixed-farming estate, it still combines vineyards with cereal crops and olive trees today. Louis entrusted its management to his eldest son, Bertrand, while his younger son Jacques would later take over Rayas and Fonsalette. Château des Tours thus followed its own path for many years, apart from the rest of the family’s holdings.

In the late 1980s, Emmanuel Reynaud succeeded his father Bertrand. It was at Château des Tours that he developed his style and conducted his experiments: working the soils, seeking full ripeness and extending the aging process. When his uncle Jacques died in 1997, he took charge of all the family estates while preserving the distinct identity of the Sarrians property. Since his death in November 2025, his sons Benoît and Louis-Damien have continued the work begun by four generations of winemakers.

The Terroirs and Vines of Château des Tours

The Château des Tours vineyards extend around Sarrians, in a warm Mediterranean climate tempered by the mistral. They fall into three main areas: the plateau, the slope and the plain. The plateau, with its sand dotted with rounded pebbles, is the most characteristic expression of the Vacqueyras appellation and produces the most sun-ripened grapes. Elsewhere, sand mingles with clay, marl and gravel, and the coolest plots are even planted with Merlot. This diversity of soils gives the estate a broad range of terroirs, accounting for the variety of its wines.

Grenache, often from old vines, forms the heart of the plantings. It is joined by Syrah, Cinsault, Counoise and Merlot for the reds, and Grenache Blanc and Clairette for the whites. Grapes are harvested by hand, yields are kept in check and harvesting is deliberately late, as part of an environmentally conscious approach to viticulture.

Winemaking at Château des Tours

The only family property whose wines are not made in the Rayas cellars, Château des Tours has its own winery in Sarrians. Winemaking there remains true to the Reynaud tradition: native yeasts, long fermentations in concrete tanks, restrained extraction and partial or no destemming, depending on the lot. The aim is never power, but purity of fruit, balance and fine tannins.

The wines then undergo extended aging in tanks and old large oak casks, with no new oak, before being bottled without fining or filtration. Time is an ingredient in its own right here: some wines, such as the Grande Réserve, are not released from the property until many years after the harvest, ready to reveal their full complexity.

The wines of Château des Tours

Château des Tours Côtes-du-Rhône red: a blend of Grenache (around 65%), Syrah and Cinsault from vines within the Vacqueyras area, this wine reveals an enticing nose of black cherry, ripe strawberry, garrigue and pepper. Supple and velvety on the palate, it combines sun-ripened fruit with freshness, supported by fine tannins. A Côtes-du-Rhône of rare distinction, it can easily age for around ten years and pairs well with grilled meats and slow-cooked dishes.

Château des Tours Vacqueyras red: long the estate’s flagship wine, this Vacqueyras blends around 80% Grenache with 20% Syrah. Its pale color, intense aromas of strawberry, rose and spice, and full, deep palate make it surprisingly refined for the appellation, and it ages remarkably well. Older vintages, which are highly sought after, develop notes of garrigue, leather, iodine and dried fruit.

Château des Tours Côtes-du-Rhône Grande Réserve red: since the mid-2010s, the estate’s Vacqueyras has been sold as a Côtes-du-Rhône bearing the Grande Réserve designation, as its pale color does not meet the appellation’s criteria. It remains a great terroir-driven Grenache, airy and fragrant, with aromas of cherry, dried rose and white pepper, supported by lively acidity and remarkable length. It is released only after very extended aging.

Château des Tours Côtes-du-Rhône white: made from Grenache Blanc, this full-bodied, generous white wine offers aromas of white fruit, flowers, almond and honey, balanced by lovely freshness. It pairs with fish in sauce, poultry in cream sauce and aged goat cheeses.

Château des Tours Côtes-du-Rhône Grande Réserve white: produced in smaller quantities, this version of the estate’s white wine gains depth from extended aging. Notes of wax, candied yellow fruit and sweet spices, a creamy texture and a saline finish make it a white wine for fine dining, best saved for fine poultry or premium fish.
