Wines from Domaine Clément Lissner: buy at the best price

Domaine Clément Lissner is an iconic estate in Alsace, located in Wolxheim, about twenty kilometres west of Strasbourg, at the foot of the famous Grand Cru Altenberg de Wolxheim. This line of winemakers, whose history dates back to 1848, is today led by Bruno Schloegel and his son Théo, who farm around ten hectares using organic methods, with the utmost respect for living ecosystems. The estate's wines are natural, dry and precise, made from ripe whole-cluster grapes and vinified with minimal intervention, without additives and most often without added sulphur. Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Muscat, Sylvaner, Auxerrois, Pinot Noir and Crémants make up a range that is true to the diversity of Alsatian grape varieties and terroirs.

History of Domaine Clément Lissner

The Lissner lineage, winemakers in Wolxheim, was founded around 1848 by Nicolas Lissner, a Polish immigrant who arrived in the first half of the 19th century, and his Alsatian wife. His grandson Alphonse Lissner, also passionate about distillation (pear, raspberry, mirabelle, quetsche, marc de gewurztraminer), was already bottling his wines at the beginning of the 20th century. After the war, Clément Lissner and his wife Marie Anne developed the estate and the commercialization of wine, from the grape to the bottle. A renowned viticultural nurseryman known for his expert advice, Clément was a pioneer on many subjects, from the grassing-over of vineyards to the choice of grape varieties, as well as a fermentation cellar adapted to the maceration of Pinot Noirs.

Having no children, Clément and Marie Anne wished to ensure the continuity of their estate and, from the 1980s onwards, turned to one of their nephews, Bruno Schloegel, an agronomist based in Wolxheim. After more than fifteen years in the service of viticulture, Bruno joined the domaine in 2001, when Marianne Lissner retired. A committed agronomist, he steered the domaine towards a form of viticulture in harmony with living nature, leading to organic farming certification in 2010. A new cellar was built in 2008 at 16 rue de Strasbourg. Bruno was joined in 2013 by his son Théo Schloegel, who has been managing the estate since 2019, and together they continue to write the next chapter of this family adventure — one of free, living, and slightly rebellious wines.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Clément Lissner

The domaine extends over some ten hectares spread across around forty parcels surrounding the village of Wolxheim. This parcel fragmentation is a true asset, as it allows for the expression of very varied terroirs, from pink sandstone, which brings lightness and finesse, to the more powerful marly-calcareous soils. The jewel of the domaine remains the Grand Cru Altenberg de Wolxheim, a hillside dominated by marly-calcareous soils, from which the rieslings draw a recognizable minerality and saline backbone — the true signature of the house.

In the vineyard, Bruno and Théo Schloegel have made the radical choice of cultivating wild flora and fauna. The biodiversity inherent to each terroir is left free to reconstitute itself, with a gradual abandonment of soil tillage and mowing, and the vine's physiology preserved (no compost, no sowing, no trimming, no leaf removal). The objective is to obtain grapes protected and ripened by the vine itself. The grape varieties include all the great Alsatian varietals: Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Muscat, Sylvaner, Auxerrois, Pinot Blanc, as well as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay destined for crémants.

Winemaking at Domaine Clément Lissner

In the cellar, the philosophy is one of minimal intervention. The grapes, harvested ripe or deliberately over-ripe, are whole-pressed and then vinified with as little input as possible, with no additions. Fermentations occur naturally, the wines are generally unfiltered and produced without added sulphites, which gives them their lively character and the occasional slight pétillance upon opening — a sign of their naturalness.

The domaine's dry wines are truly dry, sourced from ripe grapes, while the sought-after over-ripeness allows for the production of moelleux and liquoreux with balanced residual sugars. Each vintage yields approximately three Pinot Noirs and three crémants, ranging from extra-brut to brut nature. This demanding approach, praised by the guides Bettane et Desseauve, Gault et Millau, and the Revue du Vin de France, now attracts natural wine enthusiasts well beyond national borders.

The cuvées of Domaine Clément Lissner

Riesling Grand Cru Altenberg de Wolxheim: this is the flagship cuvée of the domaine, a dry riesling sourced from the marly-calcareous terroir of the Grand Cru. A precise and taut wine, it unfolds a delicate minerality, notes of white flowers and peach, a beautiful natural acidity, and that characteristic saline backbone that is the hallmark of its great length.

Riesling Wolxheim: the village-level expression of Alsace's king grape variety, this dry riesling offers a mineral and fresh profile, with citrus notes and a hint of spice. More approachable than the Grand Cru, it perfectly illustrates the house's straight and saline style.

Gewurztraminer Grand Cru Altenberg de Wolxheim: a gewurztraminer sourced from the Grand Cru, expressive and aromatic, where the typical floral and spicy notes of the grape variety unfold with amplitude, supported by the freshness and minerality of the terroir.

Muscat Grand Cru Altenberg de Wolxheim: a rare cuvée, the muscat reveals itself here as aromatic and crunchy, with a vibrant fruitiness and a dry, taut palate, showcased by the exceptional terroir of the Altenberg.

Pinot Gris M (maceration): a singular Pinot Gris aged through maceration, which departs from traditional Alsatian Pinot Gris. Its texture, depth, and notes of spices and ripe yellow fruits make it an original and lively gastronomic wine.

Auxerrois: a typically Alsatian grape variety, vinified as a dry white, supple and indulgent, with delicate aromas of white fruits. A cuvée with an excellent quality-to-price ratio, ideal as an aperitif or at the table.

Pinot Blanc Oberthal Collines du Horn: sourced from the lieu-dit Oberthal, this dry Pinot Blanc is fresh and crunchy, with toasty notes and a mineral quality reminiscent of wet stone — a perfect companion at the table.

Sylvaner (Oberthal and Dionysiuskapelle): expressed through its individual lieu-dits, the domaine's sylvaner yields a dry, lively and thirst-quenching wine, marked by freshness and purity of fruit — a testament to the often underestimated potential of this grape variety.

Edelzwicker G: a traditional Alsatian blend, this rich and powerful edelzwicker unfolds aromas of very ripe yellow fruits and spices, with a light attack followed by an ample palate punctuated by floral notes. A generous cuvée at an attractive price.

Pinot Noir: the domaine produces several Pinot Noirs each year, faithful to the tradition initiated by Clément Lissner. Lively and spirited red wines, sometimes offered in magnum, they express fresh fruit and lovely finesse.
