The Cavallotto estate, or Tenuta Cavallotto Bricco Boschis, is among the great traditional houses of Piedmont and stands at the pinnacle of the Barolo appellation. Established in Castiglione Falletto, this family wine estate cultivates an exceptional single-block vineyard on the famous Bricco Boschis hill, of which it is one of the very rare owners in near-monopoly. Renowned for its nebbiolo-based Barolos of remarkable longevity, the estate also produces terroir-driven wines from barbera, dolcetto, freisa, grignolino, chardonnay and pinot noir. Farmed organically and faithful to traditional winemaking, Cavallotto offers cuvées sought after by wine lovers the world over.
The history of the Cavallotto estate begins in 1928, when great-grandfather Giacomo Cavallotto acquired the entire property on the Bricco Boschis hill, in Castiglione Falletto, at the heart of the historic Barolo zone. The family thus became rooted in a land steeped in history, once linked to the Marchioness of Barolo, Juliette Colbert, whose steward Giuseppe Boschis lent his name to the hill.
In 1946, just after the war, the Cavallottos were among the very first winemakers in Castiglione Falletto to vinify the entirety of their harvest themselves, and in 1948 the cellar was officially established with the first bottle of Barolo signed Cavallotto. From 1967, the name of the Bricco Boschis cru appeared proudly on the label, a pioneering gesture for the time. Today, the fourth generation — Alfio, Giuseppe and Laura — perpetuates this expertise by vinifying exclusively the grapes from their own vines.
The estate's terroir extends over approximately twenty-three hectares of vines planted in a single block around the cellar, at nearly three hundred metres of altitude. The heart of the vineyard lies on the Bricco Boschis hill, whose calcareous marl soils give the nebbiolo great depth, complemented by the neighbouring Vignolo cru, situated lower down and offering a more tender flesh. The exposures, predominantly south-west, benefit from a natural amphitheatre ideal for the ripening of the grapes.
The vineyard is managed entirely organically, with the greatest respect for the soil and the expression of the place. In addition to nebbiolo, the king grape of Barolo, the estate cultivates barbera, dolcetto, freisa, grignolino, as well as chardonnay and pinot noir, testifying to a rich ampelographic heritage faithful to the traditions of the Langhe.
Winemaking at Cavallotto remains resolutely traditional and artisanal. Fermentations take place with indigenous yeasts, followed by long macerations with submerged cap that can last several weeks for the great nebbiolos. The estate then favours ageing in large Slavonian oak casks, in its ancient cellars carved into the tuff, where a constant temperature promotes slow and harmonious maturation.
The Barolos typically rest three years in large oak casks, then refine in bottle before release, which confers upon them structure, finesse and a formidable ageing potential. The simpler cuvées, aged more briefly in wood or cement tanks, express in turn the freshness and fruitiness of their grape varieties with immediacy.
Barolo Bricco Boschis: the true signature of the estate, this Barolo from the eponymous cru combines power and elegance. Aged three years in large oak casks, it unfolds aromas of rose, peony, liquorice and red fruits, with a remarkably fine structure and great ageing potential.
Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe: a prestige cuvée from the finest plot of the Bricco Boschis, produced only in the greatest vintages. Majestic and profound, this Barolo of absolute authority reveals all its tenderness and complexity over time.
Barolo Riserva Vignolo: the estate's second great Riserva, sourced from the Vignolo cru situated slightly lower in altitude. More fleshy and velvety, it offers a creamy and refined expression of the nebbiolo from Castiglione Falletto.
Langhe Nebbiolo: sourced from declassified Barolo Bricco Boschis and young vines, this well-structured nebbiolo reveals notes of red fruits, flowers and spices. Accessible and harmonious, it offers a glimpse of the estate's pedigree at a more affordable price.
Barbera d'Alba Vigna del Cuculo: from a plot on the Bricco Boschis, this dense and fleshy barbera captivates with its texture, its aromas of black fruits and spices, and its well-managed acidity. It ages two years in large Slavonian oak casks.
Dolcetto d'Alba Vigna Scot: from a plot between the Bricco Boschis and the Vignolo, this medium-structured and supple dolcetto offers notes of cherry, red fruits and a mineral touch. Indulgent and pleasant, it is best enjoyed in its youth.
Langhe Freisa: produced in small quantities from the indigenous freisa grape variety, this well-structured and complex wine develops aromas of cherry, strawberry, flowers and spices, in a harmonious and original style.
Langhe Grign: crafted from the rare grignolino grape variety, this wine stands out for its freshness, its aromatic finesse and its light character, faithful to the oldest Piedmontese traditions.
Langhe Chardonnay: a white wine grown on clay-limestone soils, vinified and aged to preserve its purity and freshness, with a balanced texture provided by partial malolactic fermentation.
Pinner: an original white wine made from pinot noir vinified as a white, this niche cuvée testifies to the estate's creativity and rounds out a range of great diversity.
