At the heart of the Layon valley, in the Anjou vineyard, Domaine Les Grandes Vignes embodies the ideal of living wine: authentic, respectful of the land and the bearer of a centuries-old history. Led with passion and rigour by the Vaillant family, this exceptional estate produces organic and biodynamic wines recognised well beyond the borders of Anjou. Across 55 hectares of carefully cultivated vines, the cuvées of Domaine Les Grandes Vignes brilliantly showcase the great Loire appellations — Bonnezeaux, Coteaux du Layon, Anjou, Anjou Villages — in bottles that delight enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike.
The history of Domaine Les Grandes Vignes begins in 1626. Since that time, the family lands have been passed down from generation to generation within the Vaillant family, forging an unbreakable bond between the people, the vine and the Anjou soil. What was originally just a few acres of vines has gradually expanded to form a 55-hectare vineyard, anchored at the heart of the village of Thouarcé, in Bellevigne-en-Layon.
Today, it is Laurence, Dominique and Jean-François Vaillant who proudly carry on this exceptional heritage, supported by a committed and passionate team. In 2008, the estate took a decisive new step by converting its entire vineyard to biodynamic farming. This decision, far from being a trend, is the natural culmination of a deeply held philosophy: respect for life, soil and plant. The Guide Hachette des Vins has awarded the estate numerous coups de cœur, seven for dry and sweet whites, confirming the Vaillant family's place among the Loire's viticultural elite. The wines of Domaine Les Grandes Vignes also feature on the wine lists of major starred restaurants, testament to their excellence.
The vineyard of Domaine Les Grandes Vignes extends over 55 hectares along the banks of the Layon, a geologically remarkable territory offering an exceptional diversity of terroirs. The plots, exposed in various orientations, rest on soils of rare richness and complexity: grey and green schist, phtanite, quartz, shelly falun, rolled sands and gravels. This pedological mosaic is one of the keys to the uniqueness of the wines produced here — each cuvée bears the singular imprint of the bedrock that nourished it.
The vines are planted with grape varieties emblematic of the Val de Loire: Chenin for the white wines, Cabernet Franc, Grolleau and Pineau d'Aunis for the reds, Cabernets and Grolleau for the rosés. Cultivated under certified organic farming and biodynamics (Veritas, Demeter and Vin Méthode Nature certifications), the vines receive daily attention: horse ploughing on certain plots, controlled cover cropping, amendments with farmyard manure, development of the soil's microbial life and encouragement of biodiversity through the presence of annual and perennial herbs. Phytosanitary treatments are limited to a few applications of herbal teas, copper and sulphur preparations in very small doses — nothing that would alter the integrity of the terroir or the plant.
The Vaillant family also pays close attention to the lunar and planetary rhythm, adapting viticultural work — particularly soil work — to draw on the most favourable influences. This holistic approach strengthens the vines' natural resilience and contributes to harvests of consistent and remarkable quality.
In the cellar, the philosophy of Domaine Les Grandes Vignes rests on a simple yet demanding principle: allowing the wine to express itself freely, without artifice. Human intervention is reduced to a strict minimum. No exogenous inputs are used: no addition of selected yeasts, no enzymes, no fining agents. The wines are neither fined nor filtered, thus preserving the full aromatic complexity and natural texture of the cuvées.
All of the estate's wines are vinified and aged without added sulphites, with the exception of wines with residual sugar, which receive a very small dose of SO₂ (2 to 3 mg/L), essential to their stability. This approach, still rare at the scale of a 55-hectare vineyard, reflects an exceptional level of rigour and technical mastery.
Nearly 300 barrels are used to ensure careful ageing, in keeping with the wine's natural rhythm. Racking and bottling are carried out on fruit days of the biodynamic calendar, so as to maximise the quality and vitality of the wines in the glass. This consistency between work in the vineyard and in the cellar is the signature of the Vaillant family's wines: living wines, traceable from the earth to the bottle.
Domaine Les Grandes Vignes offers a rich and varied range of wines, spanning reds, dry whites, sweet wines, rosés and sparkling wines. Each cuvée is a faithful portrait of its terroir and its grape variety.
La Varenne du Poirier (Blanc)
Made from pure Chenin grown on schist, this dry white wine reveals an elegant and mineral aromatic profile. On the nose, notes of fresh citrus, white flowers and a lemony touch interweave with finesse. The palate is taut and salivating, driven by a lively and sharp acidity characteristic of Chenin on schistous terroir. A fine length on the finish, carried by the fruit. Ideal as an aperitif or with seafood, this wine expresses the identity of the Anjou vineyard with precision.
La Varenne de Combre (Blanc)
Another interpretation of Chenin on schist, La Varenne de Combre offers a more aromatic profile, developing notes of citron, ripe lemon and a light toasted touch. The palate is rich yet always balanced by fine freshness, with a generous finish of candied citrus. A dry white wine best enjoyed with fish-based cuisine or poultry.
Les Mailles à l'Endroit (Blanc)
This confidential and sought-after cuvée expresses the full complexity of Chenin from carefully selected plots. Mineral, taut and deep, this dry white wine is distinguished by its directness and its remarkable capacity to age gracefully. A reference cuvée for lovers of great Loire Chenin.
Le Malabé Sec (Blanc)
Born from hillside plots of black schist and phtanite overlooking the Arcison, this pure Chenin is aged for 10 months in oak barrels, without added sulphites, fining or filtration. Its golden robe with green reflections heralds a mineral and complex nose blending ripe citrus, flint, white flowers and a light smoky touch, followed by a taut, saline palate of remarkable length. A great gastronomic white wine, ideal with seafood or fine poultry, and endowed with fine ageing potential.
