Burgundy Rouge from the Côte de Nuits

The Côte de Nuits, located in the northern part of the Côte d'Or in Burgundy, France, is a prestigious wine region renowned for its red wines. Spanning approximately 1,500 hectares of east-facing vineyards, its clay-limestone soils are ideal for Pinot Noir, which accounts for 95% of production. These wines, celebrated for their elegance and power, reveal aromas of red fruits (cherry, raspberry), notes of undergrowth, spices and an earthy touch. Their finesse and excellent ageing potential (10 to 20 years for the finest crus) make them world references. The iconic appellations include Gevrey-Chambertin (9 Grands Crus, robust wines), Vosne-Romanée (6 Grands Crus, including the celebrated Romanée-Conti), Chambolle-Musigny (refined wines), Nuits-Saint-Georges (full-bodied wines) and Vougeot (Clos de Vougeot). With 24 of Burgundy's 33 Grands Crus and a vine density reaching 10,000 vines per hectare, the Côte de Nuits is an essential destination for lovers of Burgundian red wines.

Burgundy Rouge from the Côte de Beaune

The Côte de Beaune, to the south of the Côte d'Or, covers approximately 3,600 hectares of vineyards on limestone, marl and clay soils, with a south-east exposure ideal for viticulture. Although renowned for its white wines from Chardonnay, it produces elegant red wines based on Pinot Noir (60% of planted surfaces). These wines, more refined than those of the Côte de Nuits, offer aromas of red fruits (strawberry, cherry, raspberry), floral (violet), spicy and sometimes mineral notes, with a lively acidity and supple tannins. Their ageing potential ranges from 5 to 15 years. The flagship appellations include Aloxe-Corton (Grand Cru Corton, the only red), Volnay (silky wines), Pommard (robust wines), Beaune (well-balanced wines), Savigny-lès-Beaune (fruity wines) and Santenay (rustic wines). With 16 AOC communes and an annual production of approximately 170,000 hectolitres, the Côte de Beaune offers red wines with an excellent quality-to-price ratio.

Burgundy Rouge from the Côte Chalonnaise

The Mâconnais, in the south of Burgundy, covers 7,000 hectares of vineyards on limestone and clay-limestone soils, under a semi-continental climate influenced by the Mediterranean. Although dominated by white wines based on Chardonnay (80% of plantings), it produces red and rosé wines from Pinot Noir and especially Gamay (20% of the area, or 1,400 hectares). These wines, light to medium-bodied, offer aromas of cherry, redcurrant and raspberry, with floral (violet) and sometimes earthy notes, supple tannins and a lively acidity. Ideal for young consumption (3 to 7 years), they are very affordable. The main appellations include Mâcon (385 hectares, 21,578 hectolitres of reds/rosés), Mâcon Supérieur (higher alcoholic strength) and Mâcon + village name (e.g. Mâcon-Lugny). With a modest production (10–15% of the region's 300,000 hectolitres per year), the Mâconnais wins over wine lovers with its fruity and accessible wines.

These red wines, light to medium-bodied, offer fruity aromas of cherry, redcurrant and raspberry, with floral (violet), spicy and sometimes earthy notes, supple tannins and a lively acidity, ideal for young consumption (3 to 7 years) and excellent value for money. The main appellations for reds include Mâcon (approximately 385 hectares, annual production of approximately 21,578 hectolitres of which 16,735 hectolitres are reds/rosés), Mâcon Supérieur (with a higher alcoholic strength) and Mâcon followed by the name of the village (for example, Mâcon-Lugny, Mâcon-Chaintré), while crus such as Pouilly-Fuissé or Saint-Véran are reserved for whites; the production of reds remains modest, at around 10–15% of the region's 300,000 hectolitres per year.
