History of Domaine Denis Mortet

The history of Domaine Denis Mortet begins in 1956, when Charles Mortet planted his first hectare of vines in Gevrey-Chambertin. At that time, he sold his grapes to négociants, following Burgundian tradition. In 1978, his son Denis and his wife Laurence joined the venture, bringing new ambition to the estate. Denis, a perfectionist and visionary, developed bottled wine sales and expanded the vineyard from 4.5 hectares to 11.2 hectares in the 1990s. Influenced by iconic figures such as Henri Jayer and Lalou Bize-Leroy, he established a style marked by dense and opulent Pinot Noirs, which earned him worldwide recognition.

In 2006, Denis's sudden passing marked a turning point. Laurence, his widow, and their son Arnaud, then 24 years old, courageously took over. Joined in 2013 by Clémence, Denis's daughter, they perpetuate the family legacy while adding their personal touch. Arnaud, a brilliant winemaker, refined viticultural practices and vinification to produce wines that are more elegant, fresh and true to their terroirs. Today, Domaine Denis Mortet is an essential reference for purchasing Burgundy wines, combining tradition and modernity.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Denis Mortet

The vineyard of Domaine Denis Mortet extends over 16 hectares, spread across about a hundred parcels in the prestigious appellations of Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny, Vougeot, Fixin and Marsannay. This mosaic of terroirs, ranging from the Dijon plateau to Vougeot, offers exceptional diversity, enhanced by meticulous viticultural work. Among the estate's jewels are seven grand crus, including Chambertin, Bonnes-Mares, Mazis-Chambertin and Échézeaux, as well as iconic premier crus such as Lavaux Saint-Jacques and Les Champeaux.

Arnaud Mortet, heir to precise viticulture initiated by his father, adopts an environmentally respectful approach. Since 1996, the estate has banned chemical herbicides and fertilizers, favoring organic amendments from crushed vine shoots. Arnaud reduces tillage to preserve soil structure, encourages natural grass cover with chickweed and adjusts phytosanitary treatments precisely, combining 50% organic practices and 50% sustainable farming. Manual trimming with shears, practiced on 12 of the 16 hectares, ensures aerated soils and high-quality grapes. With carefully maintained old vines and mass selections carried out in collaboration with the Chamber of Agriculture, the estate produces concentrated grapes, ideal for exceptional wines.

Vinifications at Domaine Denis Mortet

Vinification at Domaine Denis Mortet is a subtle balance between tradition and innovation, aiming to respect the fruit and reveal the essence of each terroir. The harvest, carried out manually, is received in small crates to preserve the integrity of the grapes. Rigorous sorting on a vibrating table precedes gentle destemming, minimizing damage to the berries. Since 2010, Arnaud has been experimenting with whole-cluster fermentation, particularly for old-vine cuvées, to concentrate fruity aromas. Fermentations rely on indigenous yeasts, with macerations of 15 to 20 days and minimal punch-downs (5 to 6) for gentle extraction.

Aging, lasting 16 to 18 months, uses little new wood, adapted to each vintage to preserve the purity of the fruit. The use of sulfur, reduced to one-third compared to Denis's practices, contributes to elegant wines, digestible from their youth while offering remarkable aging potential. Unfiltered and unfined, the estate's wines authentically express the richness of their terroirs, making Domaine Denis Mortet a privileged choice for purchasing Burgundy wines.
