Frequently Asked Questions

The Domaine Georges Roumier is located in Chambolle-Musigny, at the heart of the Côte de Nuits, in Burgundy. It spans nearly 12 hectares spread across some of the most prestigious appellations in the region, including the grand crus Bonnes-Mares, Musigny and Corton-Charlemagne, as well as the premier crus Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses, Les Cras and Morey-Saint-Denis Clos de la Bussière.

The yield is deliberately low, with only 40,000 bottles produced per year, making the estate's wines true rarities. The production of its most celebrated crus is limited to approximately one hectare each, which explains why they are particularly sought after. This scarcity makes bottles from Domaine Georges Roumier very difficult to find on the market.

Christophe Roumier vinifies to reveal each terroir and offer complex wines, combining lightness and intensity, elegance and length on the palate. The domaine's Chambolle-Musigny, fine and silky, pair perfectly with roasted poultry, a veal fillet or aged cheeses such as Brie. The more structured cuvées such as the Bonnes-Mares or the Musigny Grand Cru are ideally matched with red meats or slow-cooked sauced dishes.

It is Christophe Roumier, grandson of founder Georges Roumier, who manages the estate today and takes the greatest care of the 12 hectares of vines planted near the village of Chambolle-Musigny, in the Côte de Nuits. Assisted by his sister Delphine from 1993 onwards, Christophe gradually led the vineyard towards farming practices respectful of its environment, applying the principles of organic agriculture, without however claiming any certification.

Among the iconic vintages from Domaine Georges Roumier, recognized for their exceptional quality, the following stand out: 2005, 2009, 2010, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2022. These years produced wines of remarkable complexity, combining concentration and freshness, representative of the estate's style. For enthusiasts wishing to acquire a great Burgundy for cellaring, these vintages are essential references.

The two most sought-after plots of Domaine Georges Roumier are the Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru, of which the domaine holds 1.6 hectares, and the Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru Les Amoureuses, which spans 0.4 hectares. These two cuvées are among the most coveted in all of Burgundy, and their extremely limited availability makes them very difficult bottles to find.

History of Domaine Georges Roumier

Founded in 1924 by Georges Roumier in Chambolle-Musigny, the estate was born from Georges's marriage to Geneviève Quanquin, whose family owned vineyard plots in the region. Georges Roumier, with a clear and ambitious vision, quickly began to develop the estate, initiating estate bottling as early as 1945, a rare practice at the time.

Under the direction of Jean-Marie Roumier, son of Georges, the estate expanded through strategic acquisitions, most notably the mythical Grand Cru Musigny plot in 1978. This unique terroir would become one of the estate's flagship wines, marking its ascent to the pinnacle of Burgundian viticulture.

Since 1982, Christophe Roumier, grandson of Georges, has led the estate with passion and precision. Under his stewardship, Domaine Georges Roumier has not only perpetuated family traditions, but has also introduced modern and sustainable practices, allowing the wines to remain at the pinnacle of Burgundy's grand cru rankings.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Georges Roumier

Domaine Georges Roumier spans nearly 12 hectares at the heart of the Côte de Nuits, a region world-renowned for its exceptional terroirs. The plots are spread across prestigious appellations such as Chambolle-Musigny, Bonnes-Mares, and Corton-Charlemagne. Each one benefits from unique geological and climatic conditions, offering great diversity in the expression of the wines.

The estate takes great pride in working with old vines, some dating back to the 1920s, to preserve unparalleled concentration and complexity in its wines. The grape varieties cultivated are 100% Pinot Noir for the reds and Chardonnay for the white Corton-Charlemagne. Viticulture is conducted with care, without the use of chemical inputs, in a "reasoned" approach close to organic farming, although Christophe Roumier does not seek certification.

The estate practices winemaking that respects the terroir, with entirely hand-harvested grapes and meticulous sorting of the grapes before they enter the cellar.

Winemaking at Domaine Georges Roumier

Winemaking at Domaine Georges Roumier is based on a subtle balance between tradition and innovation. From harvest onwards, the grapes are meticulously sorted on a vibrating sorting table to retain only the healthiest berries. Christophe Roumier's philosophy is clear: to respect the terroir and allow each appellation to express itself fully.

Fermentations are slow and natural, with a variable percentage of whole-cluster grapes depending on the vintage. Cold pre-fermentation maceration allows for the extraction of subtle and delicate aromas. The use of new oak is sparing, not exceeding 35% for the grands crus, so as not to overpower the wine's aromas. The wines are then aged for 15 to 18 months before being bottled.

The estate is also recognized for its attention to detail in the vinification of Corton-Charlemagne, a demanding white grand cru. Christophe Roumier has perfected his winemaking method for this wine by limiting bâtonnage and avoiding the risks of oxidation, thereby offering a wine of great purity and freshness.
