2003 Vintage

A scorching year for Bordeaux in 2003, coupled with a significant drought until August 20. The lightest terroirs (Graves 2003, Margaux 2003) experienced blockages in grape maturation. Other sectors such as Saint Estèphe 2003 produced a great vintage. The harvest was larger in Bordeaux than in the rest of France, but the best properties produced less grand vin (rigorous selection) and more second wine.In Burgundy the 2003 vintage experienced identical weather conditions with temperatures of 40° for several consecutive days, and a harvest nearly 35% lower than 2002. In red Burgundy wine there are nevertheless notable successes such as the Corton 2003, rich and opulent. The white Burgundy 2003 had more difficulty resisting scorching of the grapes, and the wines will be less suitable for aging as they may lack acidity.

Our advice for buying a 2003 wine

In Champagne, the 2003 vintage is weak. In the Rhône Valley, the lack of rainfall in the 2003 vintage affected the northern vineyards (Côte Rôtie 2003). Areas with old vines in Hermitage 2003 and Cornas 2003 and in Châteauneuf du Pape 2003 produced beautiful wines that are quite warm, but well concentrated. In the Loire Valley, 2003 is the year of cabernet franc which offers depth and sustained substance with southern aromatics; the 2003 white Loire wines suffered more from the extreme heat. In Alsace, the 2003 vintage is atypical: good in Pinot Noir, but the whites lack freshness with high alcohol levels and residual sugars. Very small quantity of SGN 2003 sweet wines (as there was almost no botrytis).

The dry 2003 white Bordeaux from the great terroirs have produced very beautiful bottles. The year 2003 produced very good sweet wines, very rich, but less complete than the 2001s. In Bordeaux, the wines are full-bodied with low acidity, but the following wines are worth seeking: Calon Ségur 2003, Cos d'Estournel 2003, Montrose 2003, Lafite Rothschild 2003, Latour 2003, Pichon Comtesse de lalande 2003, Léoville Las Cases 2003, Haut Brion 2003 (white and red), Angélus 2003, Ausone 2003, Pavie 2003, Lafleur 2003, Pétrus 2003. In Sauternes: Climens 2003, Rieussec 2003. In red Burgundy, a Corton rouge 2003 (Bouchard) or a Gevrey Chambertin 1ers cru or Chambertin Grand cru 2003 (Armand Rousseau), or even a Nuits saint Georges 1er cru 2003 (Henri Gouges). In white, the cooler area of Corton Charlemagne (Bonneau du Martray) suffered less from the heat in 2003. In the Rhône Valley, an Hermitage 2003 from Jean Louis Chave (red or white). In the Loire Valley, a red Chinon 2003, or perhaps a Saumur Champigny 2003 from Clos Rougeard.
